The Great Big Appion G5 Twin Thread

Since so many of us are using these units, and so much information on them is spread across our various threads, why don't we have a dedicated thread for them!

We can discuss modifications, troubleshooting, parts sourcing, etc!

Good idea! I've been using http://www.centurytool.net/G5_Twin_Appion_Oilless_Recovery_Unit_p/g5-twin.htm

They have provided good service, but are not cheap.

Has anyone found a cheaper source of upper end seal rebuild kits or individual parts?

Great idea Banana Buds!!!! I'm sorry for hijacking your thread and others with Appion questions; a dedicated Appion thread is what we have needed all along. Strong Work!
I can't thank all of the other Appion owners enough for all of the current information and help.

I ordered my G5 from CenturyTool, and I am about to order a rebuild kit to have on hand, although I have yet to receive the order I placed ten days ago...

I think I am going to go ahead and order the Sub-Cooler and give it a try. I will be sure to record as many parameters as possiblle so I can try to compare my recovery times with the rest of the group...

Since we are starting a new thread about the G5, would anyone recommend any other Rebuild kits or repair parts as an item I should have on hand; I am trying to decide how many parts I really feel like having in my inventory. Part of me likes to have all of the possible repair parts for critical components; at the same time, it is hard to justify buying a second machine in parts just to make sure I have what I need... From what I have gathered from reading other threads, it sounds like the Upper End Rebuild kit, and possibly the fan/gearbox assembly would be useful items to have on hand.

Great work BB!

Nice looking unit! Looking forward to hearing how the Sub Cooler performs for you!

any word on that sub cooler?

my G5 came in today, and i notice it mentions a "run in time" for it initial use, but there is no other info on this or it procedure, did you guys do that on your units?

Ok, so I called them up, and was told that for the first run it really just critical to have to right load to the unit, so use a nice extension cord, 10 0r 12 gauge depending on the length, also he said you don't have to run it for 3-4 hrs the first time, it just that you need the max power to unit, as the seal etc are tight

Just thought id let ya'll know :)

Drunkengrower: I've run two on my system for quite a while. They've had several rebuilds but are probably pushing 400+ hours of run time. As with any pump they need a large dryer on the inlet to keep resin out of the pump.

I'm testing some cheaper seals for the pistons and will report back soon.
For regular users, go to a hydraulic seal place and buy some extra o-rings:
For the Appion G-5 O-rings are as follows:

Valve stems: #008 Buna or Viton
Valve retainer nut: #013 Buna or Viton
Cyl. Head to valve plate: #027 Viton
Cyl to valve plate: #026 viton
Cylinder head – exhaust valve : #013 Viton

Piston seal energizer: #115 Viton

Get ten of each and you'll always have a spare.

Are you finding this stuff locally in Vancouver?

I havnt looked yet for these sizes but McMaster Carr is a great place to get seals. Very easy to order from too!

I was under the impression the G5 could explode, that's why everyone was moving to the explosion proof pumps like care saver or cm-ep. I like the sound of the pneumatic pumps from haskel

The caresaver will contaminate your butane supply.

The Appion will not "explode"... Ugh.

The reason for the R600 rating is to have sealed electrical contacts so that in the chance your room is filled with a ignitable mixture of butane the pump can't set it off.
For a refrigeration tech working in confined spaces an obvious must have.

If you have enough leaks in the room where you are extracting that a switch will ignite the mixture you have Much bigger problems.

For a commercial operation it'll be needed to please fire marshals, but if you are operating in a well vented room it will never be an issue.

Do you run 2 appions on one extractor? What's your recovery rate with a single G5? And with dual g5?
