a big fu to the spelling police.

el problema es que el español es mucho mas dificil que el ingles, por lo tanto tendras mas errores ortograficos :)

Surprising to hear this opinion. English breaks way more of its own rules than does Spanish. Most people find Spanish quite easy to learn. Not sure how you believe it to be so much more difficult...

drama, the debate on which of the two languages is harder to learn has been settled a long time ago... if this really interests you, google it up.

Hello all,

Well, firstly, I learned how to spell in the 2nd and 3rd grade and how to form sentences in the 4th grade.... well that’s public school for you.

And it’s getting worse. The USA is like 23rd in education standards. Feels good doesn’t it? It is egregious that standards have lapsed then when I was a kid.

Typos happen but correct grammar and punctuation are good qualities to have.

Unfortunately, the prevalence of bad spelling is on par with that of the common cold or even flatulence. I am sure it is a safe bet that the number of orthographically challenged in the US alone is on the order of ten's of millions.

I am not speaking of those with dyslexia or other learning disorders.

There are those who say that "bad spelling" does not matter, that English teachers and language fusspots put too much emphasis on correct spelling. But poor spelling has powerful consequences. The perpetrator of bad spelling ends up looking stupid, or foolish or incompetent or careless (you choose the adjective).

Professionals suffer greatly in their correspondence, reports, etc(EDIT Spelling.heheheheheh). that contain misspellings. It is a reflection of their credibility and competence.

And why are there so many lousy spellers in the US? Are we not as bright as those in other countries? Do we as a nation suffer unduly from dyslexia? Or perhaps we are so undisciplined or too lazy to take the time to learn how to spell well?

Further, those with extremely bad writing habits do make it hard to comprehend what is trying to be said. Correct paragraphs, punctuation and spelling are necessary to convey ideas accurately and consistently.

Just my opinion.

If it didn't interest me, I wouldn't have posted it. I don't use google, so I hadn't heard the debate had been settled. I didn't even know there was a debate. I'm going off my own experience and that of many others in various countries. You can be right, though...it's just an opinion, after all.

I think kids biggest contributor is texting. Texting has created its own abbreviated language. I do it myself when I'm texting but try not to when I'm typing.

It is a good skill to have, but I feel its not necessary. As long as you're getting your point across.

Thanks for the thread Supermanlives, you knew you were gonna get some mightyfine comments!!

bombadil,

Lex Lugar Inc has run into cost over runs building the ship, Welder Dan quit when he refused to sabotage several of the welds AND I have been having difficulty finding 24 6" cast iron cannons. Finally, since Superman has the green kryptonite beat, the whole soda machine laced with green kryptonite Mountain Dew is out the fricken door! I have been trying to find that transvestite lawyer he kicked out of his place last year who nearly cracked him. Very difficult indeed. So c'mon give me a break. Refer a good unscrupulous welder to me who would be willing to scuttle superman's shitty pirate ship or help me find the transvestite who likes to wear mantyhouse.

Stooperman,
Look, let’s be honest here. Don't you think prefacing your name with "super" and having a Laissez-faire attitude towards spelling is a bit well contradictory and obnoxious? Initially when I first met you I was unsure if you were insecure or just pompous with a name like Superman. Well, now with your slated statement towards slacker spelling, I must think pompous. :dance013:

Finally, some (de)constructive feedback. I suggest you should change your name to Magic man, Excellent man or even just Above Average Man. Maybe there would be less criticism leveled at you and you wouldn't come off like a pompous prick.

:blowbubbles:
Lx

PS If anyone knows where I can find some old school cast iron cannons PM me.

its only the quality of the content that matters,, that is where the intelligence lies,,, the other crap is just rules that some people who like rules a little to much sometimes prefer to judge other people by,,

more people can spell/punctuate with proficiency than can articulate poignant arguments about issues that matter,, but which do we care about more the substance or the constraints within which we are told it should exist?

its left brain Vs right brain..

A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides that has a pair of opposite sides parallel.

(Called a trapezium in the UK. Both US and UK definitions of trapezium and trapezoid are swapped over.)

The sides that are parallel are called "bases". The other sides are "legs" (which may or may not be parallel).
