purple hype

heres a brief smoke report on 3 strains: grandaddy purple, purple pepper, and purple barney.

first the GDP. I feel this is the most overhyped strain since kong. this is a purple, grapey smelling and tasting strain, but i feel the buzz is mediocre indica, a boring buzz. the taste and appearance are its redeeming factors, but i dont feel its worth the hype at all. i felt it wa svery similar to many other purple strains.

2nd the purple pepper (the buds on the digi). this was some leafy commercial. better than regular commersh because it had been cured to a nice candied pepper and taste. only purple was on the leafs, of which there were many thanks to the horrendous manicure job, or lack thereof. the buds WERE very frosty however, but gave way to a weak sativa buzz. they had definitely been picked early.

3rd the purple barney. (on the paper plate) this was from a few months ago. the taste was EXACTLY like VBS, a slightly grapey/berry taste that hinted at a mild spice taste that was not evident in the smell. the taste had a perfumy quality to it, just like the VBS. The taste was good to the roach of the blunt. lip smacking good. the buzz was also significant, a strong soaring sativa buzz that was able to stand up to the SD we were blazing it with.

summary: I feel that GDP is hype and average, purple pepper was mediocre but could have been due to the grower, and purple barney is killer, do what it takes to get your hands on some if you can, dont think any clubs have cuts of it to my knowledge. :bandit:

I tend to agree but that Menddo Purps is top shelf. I apreciate the chance to read about those strains. And would certainly be interested in the Purple Barney. Hey if you smoke enough will you see the purple dinosaur :chin:

I've heard that purple creame is something to check out, never come across it though. I recently smoked GDP for the first time, I didn't think it was anything special. Sure, nice colors and it was pretty dense too, but the buzz was short and somewhat boring. Taste wasn't too impressive either.

I'm partial to Humboldt Sno, Grape and the Erkle.

enjoyed the report
i have never tried the GDP but from what i heard the urple//erkle tends to be better. seems like the name is selling pot though cause who you get that strains from makes the biggest difference IMO.
biggest critique i hear about the strain has always been a lack of potency but i think that is an issue of who grew the ganja and a question of if they grew the best version in the first place. not tryin to say urple is the strongest stone but it has an appeal and less of a body feel as far as i have seen.
i guess it is an overhyped strain based on stone but i was introduced to it for taste and color not to mention i like the density of the buds. the taste turned me on so much i cant keep it outa my face or grows. my huge complaint about the strain is rather lower yeilds and slow growth. still that taste had a way of staying in my mouth that was just too special for me to pass up a chance to work over.
i got a cross of humbolt snow and urkle at the moment... this strain has been my favorite(not exactly a fast growing strain either). them mendo people sure make some tasty crosses and sno carries a nice stone.
this gdp or even urple got caught up in hype i think is a correct statement but thats because i see the taste as being that special. when you get the strain in its full potential the taste had a way of makin the smoke drip down my throat like syrup... a full mouth and throat explosion that was equally as tasty on the exhale.

i have tried many urples and not all hold that standard not to mention talking to people... opinions seem alll over the map. tell you its funny you pointed to SD as a comparison in this post cause i love sativas but that strain, though i tried it many times... never found one i really liked. stone and taste never held up to hazes or thai. maybe the end all statement is that urple dont float your boat just cause it aint gonna suit your tastes if you are into a strain like SD they seem to do different things to different folks... i know a med patient i care for loves the urple and says the SD gives her a headache or nothing at all. i tried a few different versions as i have good access and even gave rez's beans a shot.. none ended worthwhile for her. my buddies love the SD like you and ill sit next to them with my sno/urple happy as can be.
anywho im curious to try the purple barney maybe see if i can get some cuts... i hope she grows with a bit more vigor.
peace thanks for the report

....yeah dude, I don't know what you guys are smoking... or not smoking(?) :)

What makes a strain stand out above the rest?
Smell, Taste, Color, Potency
Granddaddy Purple has all of these in heaps, or at least as good as most other meds.

shit fool, ITS PURPLE!!!!

Because face it, just about any nug you put in your pipe these days is pretty damn potent. potency is not the intense driving factor that it was, if you are one who is in serious need of potent meds, you usually would use concentrates, extracts and edibles. I'm not saying GDP isn't potent, I'm saying it's not important to the discussion, becuase it's practically JUST as potent as any of the above mentioned strains you dudes are name dropping on.

You know, damn.. I left my mass spectrometer in my other pants... so I can't prove the exact THC percentage to put this (age old) argument to rest.

GDP has taste, smell, and color, and is for all purposes, equally potent. Erkle tastes better in my opinion, but is much less available. Purple Pepper, Purple Barney have never made their rounds through my part, so I can't comment... I'm sure they are dank and I'd be happy to have them. Purple Cream is, top shelf next to Erkle.

ok so thats my writeup for the california purples. :]
Do I get at least a C+?

why all the hate on Granddaddy? tisk tisk...

Kind off topic--but that's how it's done? You measure the spectral signature of some bud and are able to determine percent thc from mass somehow?

thx for the numbers nspetca. most people wouldnt even go close to wanting to test a strain let alone actually do it.

ive been getting purple barney for about a year now. it supposedly is coming down from maine. it has an awesome sativa buzz, similar to thaitanic but not quite as trippy. the manicure on it is horrible but damn its the best purchasable weed ive ever had!

Ive smoked so many different batches of gdp that at one time I thought the smoke was very weak in potency but the majority of gdp I was buying was a little moist(The health center)....it wasnt till my buddy grew some (really good grower) that I was completly floored,....
I remember driving home and wanting to pull over to buy some water and chill for a second cuz it was so overwhelming......
after that I wanted to buy more from the clubs and I gotta say It's been very rare that I can come across a good batch of gdp with decent potency....
In short there is alot of grandaddy purple out there that gives it a bad name as far as potency.....
I have found it a great bedtime smoke but dont smoke it anymore as it tends to make me super lazy and give me anxiety... :joint:

GDP is good if you get GPD. Just remember we are judging the herb as well as the grower of that batch.

Peace Tafari
