Yer vid would be cool Herb and DIY thread would also be cool 100 :)

Got a few things sorted over weekend so stuck the fan up into attic.... Ikon filter to 8" acoustic duct> 8"to10"reducer>10" acoustic duct (when will they learn to match these bloody fans and filters " size lol!) Then the 10" acoustic attaches the fan in attic... I just stuck a shit load of loft insulation into the box the fan came in and cut a couple holes for the duct to see if this reduce the rumble and hum at low speeds... While it helps some it's still a noisy b'stard that sending a loud rumble into one of the rooms below.... Not that I think the neighbours could hear directly but they may get the hum and rumble transmitted through walls, air vents etc... Think I may need an early upgrade to a TD.... Gonna fiddle about with it some more first.

All is fairly quiet on 50% speed wind noise and in room tent is housed. Don't think I need fan much over that (temp test to follow). The f**kin fan though!! It's vibrating the ceiling slightly, suspended from bungees it does the same so have sat it on some thick ass foam not that it's helping either.

Suggestions on getting this bugger tame? Or is it an early xmas pressie and ebay the RVK :p lol! The joys of growing in a flat :D

Early xmas prezzie mate lol the rvk are some powerfull fans its just a shame about the noise

keep the fan away from corners mate as that amplifies the sound alot

So you have it suspendid on bungees acoustic ducting and makeshift box and its still humming hhhhhmmmmm td silent mate a think lol had to get the hhhhmmmm in there

Me be thinking some barings may be on the way out. On bunjees that should not vibrate below.

Will try and do a video in the next couple of days.

Some well made fans can get a new lease of [quiet] life if they get their bearings and bushes lubed up. Cheapies are made so you cannot, they overheat and die sooner rather than later.

My buddy had a Centrifugal fan running for 18 years continuously in his loft with just a few dabs of high temp grease. Copperslip iirc.

Quality is always quieter, manufactured to tighter tolerances and made from better materials that last longer and go wrong far less.

cheesey

you cud allways change the bearings in rvks we did this over at the hiddenroom they take the same size as scateboard wheels .only took around 30 mins to do we used abec 7s . all you cud here was the air passing in the ducting then . no humming from the fan at all . when my fans are next turned off im going to do the same to all of my rvks , 2bh i dont think there noisey at all i sleep 3ft away from x1 150 rvk and x2 125 rvks all on full speed and dont find it a problem .

Thanks for the pointers guys....

Moved the fan from in the corner [insert blush smiley here] far less rumble.... Gonna pick up some rubber rings as I had the bungees attached to metal hooks.... I think it maybe cool though as the fan really doesn't need to run to quickly (just quick enough to ensure neg pressure and carbon is cleaning smells.... quick temp test 4 hours 1 x 600w lamp and got to 24c max no intake...

I'm guessing it won't exceed 28c once running properly as this was during the warmest part of the day.

My mate has told me to wrap the fan in a big ass duvet looooool! I had a good laugh then heard his one with the duvet round it and was a convert :p lil more tweaking I might be ok with the rvk. Air noise is fine wooshing isn't a big issue just that frikkin rumbling, gotta run.......

Been a lil busy but managed to get the temps tested using a passive intake and 1 x 600 it's not getting over 21C I will have to either stick my other fan on for intake to slow the speed of incoming air right down or add another 600w light, which I was trying to avoid for electrical use.... Would be at the peak of use for property size with fans controllers etc considered... Gonna try putting a few bends into the intake duct to see if that helps keeps temps up.

The fans runs @ 35% during lights off and there is good neg pressure (tent is sucked inward) so hopefully carbon filter does it's job.

The noise from the fan, now hung in a different position on bungees, has reduced quite a bit now it's only the frikkin humming that I need to sort but have found a cracking thread on uk420 that shows how to build a variac speed/ temp controller for £100 which is a bloody good price considering airforces single variac controller is like £105 and single variacs from just fans etc are like £60 each.

I'll post up my DIY once I build it.

I got a question about ozone as I'll be picking up a genny for sure... I'll be using it in the room itself as I figure that's where the majority of leak will occur from opening tent. What I would like to know is does anybody have an idea on how much ozone (mg/hr or ppm) needs to be produced before it starts to eliminate odor?

If you tell me how much ozone your genny produces and how long per hour you run it that would be cool too :)

There is a thread on "another forum" which rhymes with you pay for plenty, detaling the changing of bearings in rvk type fans, ordinary bearing from the skate shop.

grow something sweet like uk blues ;) for real you should get a big scrubber and try to quiet the fan with a box and insulated ducting. should do the trick.

Big fan... check.... big scrubber check insulated ducting and fan boxed.... check :) Uk blues cut.... no check :D

It's getting there now mate. Just the fan hum when running at slow speeds that needs to be done away with and I have the variacs on order to build the speed controller to sort that out

you can use a product called dynamat or something similar for car audio that will eliminate buzzes and vibrations. i sat my can filter on a patch of it so it wouldnt vibrate the floor.

dyna mat or fatmat will do it line your box with it but its not that cheap

al be putting some under my res to stop pump vibrations

The td silent range DO NOT like SMS type varister fan controllers. It makes them scream.

But they work perfectly on the cheaper transformer type fan controllers. I have two on controllers now.

Hi Herb, do you mean that they will work fine with the cheaper electronic based sms controllers like the twin controller, but not on the dearer variac based 'mechanical' sms controllers?

I am thinking about getting a TD in Jan... I read that the TD's can be wired straight to a thermostat and eliminate the need for a controller altogether due to the 2 speed settings on the fan

Do you know how much m3/hr the 8" 880m3/hr runs @ on the low setting?

Hi,

The do not work with the cheap SMS ones, the ones you need are the heavy transformer type ones. Can be found on eBay under silent fan controllers.

And yep, the Tds 8inch on lower setting is 700 m3

Both the 500 and 800 td silents are both running on full speed and they are loads quieter than any other fan ive tried eg wooden box fans vents box fans rvks i shall be getting the transformer that herbs mentioned to controll them as my temps are at 20 with lights on

also if peeps want temp controlled units sms do a mechanical version but they aint cheap 300 plus notes a think have a look on progrow

Didnt see your oost shh the mechanical ones will work the td silents as they are variac based transformers

You can knock up a double fan variac based temp and speed controller for about £120... I seen one on ebay that does is variac based but doesn't have a thermostat attached for £65 I think it was.... The easiest idea I've read is to wire a thermostat directly to the TD so it runs on low power constantly until it goes over desired temp and then full power kicks in....

I'm running my 10" and the hum sucks donkey cawks using the cheap electronic SMS controller, as ya point out the SMS mechanical one is what we need but costs are prohibitive to say the least lol, especially when you can knock one up for less than half of that price.

I'm getting a TD silent 880m3/hr, I'll try the thermometer way first and see how that goes if I need to reduce speed further I'll make up a variac as I'll need a thermometer to do it anyway... temps are 21C in my tent I needed to take change the intake from taking air straight from outside to from in my home as it was 18C before that lol!

i had to do the same mate and change inlets not good for the winter having a direct outside feed lol

you got an ebay link to the controller mate?

I wiped out the hum from my sms twin controller by mounting the control unit on a sheet of soundproofing self adhesive rubber matting, stuck to the wall. I think the hum is the unit against a bare wall in my case as my fans don't hum at all even at low speeds, but it is a soundproof room. lol :)
