Paterno entitled to annual pension of 500K+

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's long service at the university theoretically puts him in line for a pension of more than $500,000 a year, according to an Associated Press analysis of state public pension records.

Paterno's pension records obtained Tuesday from the State Employees' Retirement System credit him with more than 60 years in the system. The formula used to determine benefits makes him eligible for a pension equal to 100 percent of the average of his three highest-salary years.

His pay rose from $541,000 to $568,000 over the past three full calendar years.

When Paterno retires, he will have to make a set of choices to determine his pension, including whether to designate a survivor to receive benefits after he dies and whether to obtain a one-time, lump-sum payment of his own contributions.

State Employees' Retirement System spokeswoman Pamela Hile said Internal Revenue Code and Retirement Code benefit limits may also apply, so the agency does not issue estimated pension benefits ahead of time. There also is a long-service supplement that could boost Paterno to 110 percent of his final average salary.

A 2006 report on Pennsylvania state pensions said the largest pension at that time within SERS was $254,000, being collected by a Penn State surgery professor who had withdrawn a $554,000 lump sum.

Paterno, 84, lost his job as head football coach last week after his onetime top assistant Jerry Sandusky was charged with sexually abusing boys, including some on campus, for more than 15 years.

Paterno has not been charged with any crime, and state prosecutors have said he is not a target. But he has come under criticism for how he responded when a graduate assistant said he saw Sandusky sexually attacking a boy in the football team locker room shower. A grand jury report said Paterno contacted the athletic director but did not go to police, and he has said he wishes he had done more.

Sandusky has denied the allegations against him, acknowledging he showered with young boys and hugged them but saying his behavior was nothing more than horseplay. He told NBC News' "Rock Center" on Monday that he is not a pedophile but should not have showered with the boys he's charged with sexually assaulting.

The retirement system also confirmed Tuesday that Sandusky collects a $59,000 annual pension and withdrew $148,000 upon retirement.

do the math, if he gets the 110% of his last 3 yrs average that's OVER 600K per year.......

One of the bad things about all this is PA has few laws to charge anyone, dock their dole or do anything at all. They can go after Sandusky. But they can't go after anybody else if no laws were broken.

The idea we need no new laws may find a new theater. Maybe we'll administer our own personal brand of scrutiny against those we personally feel deserve whatever 300+ million personal opinions can dish.

Or, PA could make it law to report child rape to the police. Not dad or the boss. Then we wouldn't have so many potential transgressors in these situations. If we did, they'd face potential fines or incarceration. Laws aren't necessarily intended to prevent crimes from ever happening, they're intended to mitigate crimes we know may happen again and again.

things are truly jacked when you need a law for everything that could ever happen. right and wrong don't happen in court any more, what they do is read laws and maybe that is the problem.

does everything have to be written down just to say "that is wrong"? ...... laws or not , if these guys had to sit in front of a jury, and all they had to decide was if what they did was criminal i have a feeling they would all be in jail. the legal system is proof that lawyers can fuck anything up ...... we pay em to do that and 15 years later we elect them to office

They said on the Dan Patrick show this am that McClearsky or whatever the grad asst name is that witnessed the shower incident. He told fellow players that he broke up the rape and went to campus police and there is now no record of a police report etc..Unbelievable that this was able to be covered up for so LONG! I also read that an additional 10+ victims have come forward since Sandusky's interview on CBS.

Not to mention a law against codling a sodomite translates to, 'need a law for everything that could ever happen'. I imagine all those kids being told, "We have to wait until somebody learns how to handle this the right way. I wonder how many more showers that would translate to.

Step 1 - get a handle on national trial numbers

Step 2 - separate those you dislike the outcome

Step 3 - conduct statistical analysis

Step 4 - compare results to gut reaction

does everything have to be written down just to say "that is wrong"?
It has to be written down if it's illegal. You're still free to make judgement calls.

Finally - at least an attempt at keeping this shitshow on the straight and honest...

That judge :moon: should be disbarred - and spend some time w/ female cellmates that have had their molesters given same breaks as she gave her rich, white, sicko, charity buddy...

i think all i meant (and i did type it all by myself) was it is a sad day when the DA has to throw up his hands and do nothing because there is a technicality or hole in the system that ties his hands.

there is an article in the UCMJ (uniform code of military justice) that they called "the catch all" when i was in (I believe it is article 134) .......... what it says is that if the commander thinks it's wrong, then he can burn you for it. seems like something along those lines would be perfect for this, or almost any situation that is this screwed up.

does that explain was i was saying a little better? ......... it's a judgement call:wave:

Franco Harris: Open mouth insert cleats.

Franco was fired from his new job today for supporting his former head coach while giving an ear beating to the Penn State brass for firing him.

Yahoo News

Steelers legend and Penn State great Franco Harris blasted Penn State's Board of Trustees for firing Joe Paterno, and promised to support his former coach by visiting him Saturday.

well now he can visit with him on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.......

Pro athletes / ex-athletes / actors think everything that comes out of their mouths and genitals deserve a special place in "our" world...

Immaculate reception be damned, Franco - side with a pedo, pedo supporter or pedo facilitator, you get pedo stink all over you, and there are few things that stink as bad as little kid rape...

Sad...

The NCAA is now investigating the PSU football program for lack of institutional control. For those that don't follow sports, that's as serious as it gets. It's too early to say, but the football program could receive the death penalty. And once they are investigating, they can move anywhere they wish to, so this could become even uglier. I have a feeling the NCAA is not going to bring lube with them.

'mcqueary email'

OK. So here's the e-mail sent to an anonymous "friend" he doesn't know well.

"You are the first person I have told this ... and I don't know you extremely well ... and I have been told bye (sic) officials to not say anything ...."

"I did stop it, not physically ... but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room ... I did have discussions with the official at the university in charge of police ... no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds...trust me."

"Do with this what you want ... but I am getting hammered for handling this the right way ... or what I thought at the time was right ... I had to make tough impacting quick decisions."

"This is off record ... again ... I have not and will not say anything to anyone else."

The American in me says innocent till proven guilty and never trust a cop. That all police in the area deny hearing from him doesn't mean that much to me. I do find the timing suspicious. This certainly isn't the story he told under penalty of perjury. It doesn't match any of the grand jury statements of others. And what the hell does "I did stop it, not physically ... but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room" mean? He got a consent form from the child? He moved them to a nice hotel? Unless he physically removed the child (and there's no suggestion he did) then he didn't stop anything.

Joe Paterno Diagnosed With Lung Cancer
Please...

Every tinhorn dictator, every rich embezzler - every rat bastard guilty mofo with a good lawyer gets "cancer" or other completely horseshit disease that will rule out them ever doing real time, can't incarcerate a "sick" man...

Then, as soon as said dirtbag is out of the country "seeking treatment", they suddenly get well enough to resume banging expensive hookers, going to expensive parties, and generally living the same fucking life they were living before all this awkwardness started.

Bullshit - I don't care if his fucking nose rots off in front of me, his lungs come out of his body w/ each breath, or his eyes turn black and fall out - if he has time or penance coming, he serves it...:moon:

Grrrrrrr...

I was watching the interviews after Penn State beat Ohio State today. Jay Paterno (Joe Pa's son) was giving a post game interview.

He has been the quarterback's coach for 12 years. On Penn State staff for 17.

He did not fail to mention his father's sudden case of "treatable" cancer.

If he really does have lung cancer, I believe it's called karma. If it's BS, having been a cancer survivor, I'm even more disgusted. If that's even possible.

Whatever the truth is. This institution certainly does have a cancer and it looks terminal.
