I just don't see how they have money like they do. They seem really dumb but somewhere in life they had to get a few things right to sink 250k into a shot in the dark.

it's not what you know, it's who you know....

they have made some money, and obviously have a solid work ethic.....a solid enuf ethic that some ppl will flow them some funds...

the rich dude that was gonna help/invest bowed out when they couldn't even grab a good deal on a 'dozer at auction....

dude saw the signs...i mean "red flags"...this crew needs alot of help

good comments here, this is about as good as reality TV gets
as far as we can tell, it was all legal with Fred and Earl
but we didn't see the lease, and we're not going to see the lease
the game is hardball, no question, still doesn't sit well with a lot of us
but as mentioned, most of us have never done mining leases
i'd say things got as close to a reality TV murder as there has been
so Fred may have been legal, still makes me smile thinking of him down at the bottom of the glory hole(enjoy your gold Fred)

I don't have TV so don't watch the show. Things with the 80 acres are moving along. We're planning on getting a company in there to take out the river rock for landscape use then we'll sift through the sand that's there then call them back in to take out more rock till we get to bedrock. Last time this section of the river was taken down to bedrock was '97 so all new gold down there. We're not expecting to find a bunch but should be interesting and pay for our efforts at the least. Main thing we're looking at is doing exploration of the dry part of the property which if anything would pay for any hard rock exploration. The landscape rock in the river is worth more than the gold there. We have access to a $50k setup down the river at a friends place where we can crush rock to get an idea of it's worth. Lots of quartz veins in the area so you never know.

Only thing I'm really planning on is getting a good workout, finding a few good nuggets and maybe we'll find something to make it all worth while.

Thx man. Only way I can see approaching it. We may get lucky but not planning on it. Getting lucky is the dream though ain't it? Would take just 1 nice find! We need to thin out the timber for fire prevention and there's already 200+ yards of good soil on the property my buddy hauled in over the summer for a little garden. That timber will build some good structures with the portable mill we have access to.

Anyway...here's looking forward to an interesting 2012 :)

So, your going to be placer mining? How are you going to work tha material? High Banker/Sluice?

Are there any productive mines in the area?

What county are you located in? If you don't mind telling. :)
My claims are in Mariposia/Tuolumne/and Placer County(Foresthill)

Sounds like a good plan. Let us know how it pans out.

LOL! I love that line!

Dredge in the river, high banking the dry part of the property near the river, using a detector to scout the property (this has already produced 2 oz in a few hours with 1 1 oz nugget) to map potential spots out then there's hard rock exploration. We're cutting in a new 'driveway' to the property and will be testing as we go along. I'm just planning on having some fun!

Yes there are productive mines in the area for placer, high bank and hard rock. Productive placer spots on either side of the property on the river.

Doubt we'll get skunked but not planning on a windfall either.

Nice....
I assume, your not in California? :dunno:

It sounds like the area has a-lot of potential.
Good luck, & enjoy it.

Oh yeah...Cali somewhere above Oroville :)

You're either a dreamer, an internet prospector or a liar.

Everyone in the mining industry knows suction dredging
(and that's "in stream" and pond "dredging" whether on BLM or private land!!!) has been outlawed in Cali when SB 670 was passed in 8/6/2009
And the above includes heavy limitations on dry banking as well.

Thanks Strainhunter.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Illegal to Dredge in Cali.

Shit, I remember back in 87-88 when I helped my pops drag a 4" Keen Dredge down to the Merced River, and float it upriver close to 2 miles. Took a full weekend.
It was great times.

i can get to bedrock fast redneck style. boom LOL. you tell em strainhunter. maybe the guy is just breakin the law and dont care. i might be inclined to mine my own way if i had mineable land. i aint much for rules and laws tho . hell i still redneck fish occasionally. its so much easier just netting up the fish that float to the top LOL

I'm actually none of those so wrong, wrong and wrong but am guilty of being naive especially when it comes to some of the appropriate terminology and exactly how we can go about reclaiming the gold on the property in certain locations. I'm probably pretty realistic regarding the potential and how much work will be required to get anything significant accomplished which means a lot of hard work just to pay for things. My buddy is the 'miner' and been doing it in that area for almost 30 years. One thing for sure is the property adjacent near the river has been worked for about 25 years successfully full time and is still very active. It appears we have more workable area than they and not touched yet or very little. The river itself has been cleaned out a few times over and only some new/flood gold there and as I've said the landscape rock in the river is worth much more than the gold. As for suction dredging my buddy said yeah not possible but ways to clean things out. My buddy actually said 'go in and clean out the sands' and I, unfortunately assumed, that meant suction dredging. I'll take my lumps on that one. He and I ran a small dredge in a side canyon about 5 years back for a summer...man it was cold and hard work! He's aware of the current 'bans'.

We're not going to have any problem high banking some areas of the property. The adjacent property is being worked with a classifier, conveyor to move the excess material out and a trommel and been paying their bills for a long time. A lot of their work was done when gold was $250 an ounce.

maybe the guy is just breakin the law and dont care.
Have no intention of breaking any laws cause not worth it. I do know that Fish and Game stopped a few people in the area running suction dredges and just warned them with no fines or jail time but I wouldn't take that chance. The weird thing is F&G told one person they were in compliance once they moved the dredge to the shore.

Strainhunter - a few things coming up for me. First can you tell me the legal difference between 'mining' and 'prospecting' and how that would affect certain activities? Second do you have any input that might be valuable based on you mining/prospecting experience?

As I've said the landscape rock and timber are the top 2 best opportunities for 'income'...think I said that...lol. If we get lucky maybe make some $ on any gold but not counting on it and mainly just for fun. Have heard of a few multi pound nuggets found in the area using modern detectors but that's like hitting the lottery. I just want one decent sized nugget I can fondle in my pocket then I'll call it a success.

just watched another commercial for the show, that's as much of that old fucks voice as I can stand; if I had to work with that old bastard I'd slit his throat to shut him up.......

:dunno: just sayin'

Those guys on the show are clueless. That bridge over the Klehini is in way better shape than they made it out to be. There is a natural chum salmon run that spawn in the river they drove their equipment in, idiots. I am surprised the residents of Haines didn't run them off.

it's kind of the 'dummies diary of gold mining'
don't want call it the dummies guide, they've done some things that shouldn't be done
but you do get the feeling what you're seeing is real, sad but real
the previews for the next episode showed more conflict, status quo i guess
but damn curious what will pop out of that virgin strip of dirt, that's what hooks you into mining(or gambling)

The best part of the show is Parker Schnabel, he is way beyond his years!! When he was talking to Dakota Fred was too funny! Bought that piece of equipment and make a few bucks it was cool!!
I really doubt if the Hoffman boys are going to do any good, they seem to take one step forward and 3 steps back, oh well
Dakota Fred is a dipshit!
