SURFING

You guys know the Movie "Modern Collective"?

Probably one of the best made surf movies ever imo. The editing and music choices really make the movie, not to mention the awesome surfing.

5'5" redux is probably a close second so check that out if you haven't

piratebay has a pretty good selection of newer surf movies if anyone is interested.

Sounds sweet man!!!

Pretty consistent over there?

It's also known as the Ficklepines... Waves come from typhoon swells (erratic but can get all time perfect) during summer / fall and consistent windswell (dawn patrol or afternoon glass off) fall through spring. But I find that most spots are also quite fickle with regards to swell direction, tide, wind, etc etc. More so than lots of other places I've surfed... So nope, not consistent. But it does get epic (I've surfed Hawaii, Indo, etc etc), and its so much better than surfing with the crowds that plague most of the world these days...

I stayed in a cabin there awhile back, Costa Rica was great but I didn't expect it to be so developed in some parts. I remember driving to playa brazsilito and seeing all these california looking shopping centres with apple store and burger king or subway.. 5 minutes away you see people in shacks.

I really liked Nicaragua, san juan del sur had good surfing and five star lobster dinners for about 10 dollars .. would love to live in either of those countries for a year or two.

I found it very easy to score there, got it for free most of the time. Some very nice indoor as well but they wanted 50 bucks for a couple grams.

Hey Ojo,

Thanks for the Pavones pics. I've been to CR before but have yet to go to Pavones.

I've surfed up at Witches and Ollies as well as Tamarindo and the breaks near there. Went as far south as Jaco, stayed for two days and went back to Tamarindo. Didn't like it there at all. The surf was cracking, but it just wasn't as laid back as up north.

What can you tell me about Pavones? Got any good recommendations for places to stay? General tips? Is La Cantina as crazy as the old stories or has it mellowed since then? I know the break needs a solid south swell to really turn on, so I was thinking I might try to go next summer.

Any info you can share is much appreciated.

Info about the past (Cantina included):

http://www.thefactsaboutdanfowlieandpavones.com/en/

Place to stay (further south but worth it):

http://www.ranchoburica.com/lang/en/nieuws/

Very friendly toward "us".

Place to eat while at Pavones:

http://www.la-manta.com/

Nice prices and superb food and drinks!

Tip:

While at Pavones, keep a safe distance from a local beach bum "Rasta" surfer... He lives by the beach. This fellow is nothing but a thief and crack head. Do not trust this rat.

Other than that, super nice and relaxing place...

Thanks Ojo and greenmango for the infos.

I've done a bit of reading about danny fowlie and the whole campesino deal. I've also already read "in search of captain zero" and every article on that pavones info website you posted the link for, Ojo. Thanks for the info anyway as I would imagine not many people know the story of Dannyland and some people may find it interesting.

That place to stay looks very nice, thanks for posting that up as well.

I think Nicaragua is going to be the next place to be "discovered." As it is, Costa Rica is pretty much touristified by now. Still rugged, but from what I understand, not the same as it used to be. Definitely will be heading south for my next trip down there.

Anyone been to the Caribbean side? Playa Cocles? Salsa Brava? I hear Cocles is supposed to be good Nov-Dec.

I really enjoy taking photos of waves. Here are a few, mostly from Asia / the Hawaiian Islands.

California has been firing from that big tahiti swell, hope the rest of you guys are scoring!

On the first day of the swell a local point break that is usually only a winter spot was firing off the super long 22 sec periods. It was a sweet surprise.

Dont know how I missed this thread...

Grew up in the east coast and I surfed OBX and VA chasing that hurricane swell, now Im on the west coast and I go out for the first time next week in Oside...I got chills...I haven't been on a board in almost 4 years. I ride whatever don't care what it is, I'll try and surf on a plank if it will float me. :)

Nice you found the thread, Calcio. I've never surfed the east coast before, but I understand the surf has been epic there with the last two storms that rolled through. Saw some great pics on surfline of the outer banks the other day. I'd tell you to go check em out, but it might make you homesick!

Socal has lots of good days and plenty of good spots. Of course, there are lots of surfers too, but Mexico isn't far if you want uncrowded waves.

Nice to hear you're getting back into it. Nothing like going surfing to clear the head and get a little exercise at the same time.

Good luck!

i spent about 4-5 months on that beach in costa rica about 10 years ago or so before it became touristic. it was awesome. you could spend a whole day on the beach without seeing people.

... santa teresa... miss it big time! the xmas party at the loro amarillo, the fish burgers at the palapa on the beach close to the rocks... the BBQ parties :D hehe good time! only problem was the crappy mouldy weed and the 10 dollar flor de caña rum - had too much of it hehehe

This is what I don't get about Costa Rica. Why is the weed so bad?? I mean, it's not like they don't have good grow conditions. I think they're close enough to the equator to grow some nice jungle sativas outdoors. Every story I hear about CR, no one ever mentions the killer herb they got. It's always crap. WHY???? LOL.

Maybe the folks down there just don't like growing weed.

They are lazy, mentally challenged and pussy boys... that's why.

They rather push cocaine on every single surf spot.

Pavones, Limon and Guanacaste are filled with Narco-Towns in which most locals are active in cocaine trade.

Doing llello is cheaper than drinking beers in many beach towns.

You just can't imagine the social damage this is inflicting.

Costa Rica has become a favorite destination for Coke Holidays.

high humidity makes storage issues difficult. also there is good weed in different parts of costa rica, but the pacific coast tends to get mostly colombian block weed. the weed is usually burried or worse to hide it. so earthy smell and mouldy humid compressed swag is to expect. worst was the time just after the rainy season.
