What do you call a Chinese woman with one leg shorter than the other? Irene

****************

A Chinese guy walks into the optometrist's office and says he can't see very well.

The optometrist asks the Chinese man if he has a cataract.

The Chinese guy says, Oh no, I dlive Rincoln.

the 11 pm model showed an 80 mph storm west of us. still a lot of uncertainty but water was all sold out at Wal-Mart! We have good artesian well water but not enough jugs. Well preparations will go into high gear Friday regardless.

that is true, and would be especially good for water that you won't drink (although you could if you have to). thanks for the suggestion.

They've got cheaper versions for ~$10. A new one could be washed with some soapy water and filled. 30 gallons to drink could last a pretty good while.

My power was out for 10 days and we never lost water. Apparently the plant could pump to the storage tank and it's all gravity feed from there. If you have a well I can see your precautions.

clorox bleach jugs rinsed well only once make the best water storage units, shop around (not in times of need) for some 5 gallon water jugs, buy some water purification tablets.

canned meats, canned hams have long expiration dates, I've read that Spam will not expire in the can only its flavor will diminish over time, the meat will always be edible otherwise.

In 1820, William Perry (Parry) took an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage, toward the North Pole. He took with him some canned meats. At the time, food canning was about a 10-year-old technology.

At least one can of meat was not used and wound up in a museum in England. In 1938, it was opened and found to be edible. It was fed to a cat which suffered no ill effects from eating the 118-year-old meat.

Now, we're not saying that our canned meats, canned cheese and canned butter will last 118 years, but we're pretty confident that you can get at least a 15-20 year shelf life out of them, in light of this article. (The manufacturer offers a 3 year guarantee.) There's a second, similar story--this time American--following this one.

Here's the other story:

The steamboat Bertrand was heavily laden with provisions when it set out on the Missouri River in 1865, destined for the gold mining camps in Fort Benton, Mont. The boat snagged and swamped under the weight, sinking to the bottom of the river. It was found a century later, under 30 feet of silt a little north of Omaha, Neb.

Among the canned food items retrieved from the Bertrand in 1968 were brandied peaches, oysters, plum tomatoes, honey, and mixed vegetables. In 1974, chemists at the National Food Processors Association (NFPA) analyzed the products for bacterial contamination and nutrient value. Although the food had lost its fresh smell and appearance, the NFPA chemists detected no microbial growth and determined that the foods were as safe to eat as they had been when canned more than 100 years earlier.

The local L&M Fleet Farm Supply nearby has that smaller Honda (2000 Watts) generator for less than $900. Living off of canned meats, soups and dry foods like mac n' cheese would be a snap. Driving a steady 18/6 light cycle might be tricky unless you can gas up your generator while it's running, a potential fire hazard.

I have a 4000watt diesel genny & a 5500watt gas powered, I'm gonna sell both and buy 2 propane powered genny's, propane fuel never goes bad and you can store it in 20#, 30#, 100# cylinders or 1500# units mounted in your yard like Spastic Gramps. Propane NEVER goes bad, as long as you don't have a leak you're good to go forever. Cleaner burning means your propane genny will always start easily too. btw, 2 generators in case one dies.

Here's a trick some of you might like:

1) power goes out
2) you go outside and turn OFF (disconnect) the power company connection to your home.
3) fire up your 6000watt generator which will have a 240Volt output plug
4) unplug your electric clothes dryer
5) connect your genny to your dryer outlet w/the custom cord you have made in advance
6) you have electrified your home (every outlet will be live!), because your clothes dryer is a 240 volt plug your genny will power both sides of your homes electrical panel. your 6000 watt genny will power the fridge, TV, lights, microwave, computer and even a room sized AC unit all at one time; gonna use the electric stove? turn everything else off 1st.

first and foremost though is disconnecting your home from the power company source or when they relight the neighborhood & your gennys running current into those lines your home will blow their fuses in an instant.

you just need to turn off the switch that's near your power meter before connecting the genny.

safest way yet is to have a qualified electrician install a transfer switch in your home for your generator.

7) power comes back on disconnect the genny first & then throw the power switch up.

Stay safe my EC peeps, especially those in the NY area. I have the feeling it's going to be one hell of a weekend, I've got plenty of nugget and a case of beer so will make weathering the storm a little easier. Also dont wait to grab some water supply, I was out today and most stores were sold out of jugs of water, even the bottled water was cleaned out, fuckin gluttonous pigs out there that buy way more than they need really ruin it for everyone else.

I think Stoner4life covered all those concerns already by saying to turn that switch off. And it may be helpful to some. That's why this thread is here, for us all to find something that works for us. For me, it looks like 70-75 mph tops and a few inches of rain, I have seen worse. Gloria in '85 was cool, as I was a scrawny teen then and I faced into the wind and could remain standing at a 45 degree angle! This looks weaker than that was. We'll see.

yeah it looks like rain and tropical storm winds can still bring down power lines here, I hope that they don't bring them down here!
