I have two options for cabinets and it is either Particleboard or Resin Plastic.

Particleboard is made using toxic chemicals.

But so is plastic..

What's my safest bet?

Building a box out of my own wood is not an option.

The partyboard is stolen?

Yes troll the particleboard is stolen..

When I said my own wood.. I was referring to my own choice in wood..

You're a mod?

How about you give me some of your moderated mentorship? what do they pay you for anyway?

as far as light-proofing goes, the particle board would be a better choice. Also, it would be easier to fasten together and cut/drill holes in so I'd go with the particle board.

What dimensions are you planning? lighting? cooling?

and learn to laugh a little... we're all friends here....

I also second the particle board. Are there any reasons why you'd want to use the plastic? Easier to move around I guess..

Particleboard is made with Formaldehyde which causes cancer.

Particleboard releases Formaldehyde as a gas.

Im wondering if the heat and moisture mixed with the formaldahyde gases could be problem?

I really need an educated answer someone that knows a thing or two about particleboard.. no assumptions or guesses..

why not MDF? Its strong, soundproof, and easy to work with ...any wood you buy is treated with some chemical...
particleboard wears down fast and falls apart...buy a dresser from walmart and you'll see what I mean...lol..
good luck

You gave us 2 options. Particleboard or plastic. We told you particleboard. You then come back and say you don't want to use particle board. So use the plastic. I don't understand what kind of answer you're looking for here..:blowbubbles:

How can your wood not be an option? It's your wood, use it any way you want. If partyboard bothers you, don't buy it. Lumberyards are full of different kinds of wood. Pick any kind you want.

I searched on da intranets, one search, first click, I am now a particle board expert here to assist you.

"Particle board has been under a lot of scrutiny. It contains formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that has been directly linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (throat cancer) in people. The chemical can also cause, headaches, allergies, nausea and a burning sensation in the throat. It is nasty, nasty stuff.

A lot of household items are made of particle board: Cheap bookshelves, furniture, etc. Particle board has even been used in the construction of mobile homes and trailers. After Hurricane Katrina, many of the refugees had to live in cheap trailers that had been contaminated by formaldehyde in the particle board. This caused quite the public outcry, but it raised awareness of the material's dangers.

But how long is particle board toxic? Surely there must be some sort of half-life to the particle board's toxicity.

There is. The news is not wonderful. Particle board takes 5 to 10 years to outgas.

Here is the breakdown:

In under two months, particle board decreases its toxicity by about 25% . By the end of one year, particle board is only half as potent as it was new. It levels off from there and can take up to ten years to run completely out of gas.

Particle board is made from recycled material if that's any consolation. If you buy pressed wood furniture or other products containing formaldehyde, make sure they are placed in a well-ventilated area, and I would probably let them sit in a garage or shed for two months before bringing it in your house. (not buying them at all is probably the best bet.) Make sure to weigh the risks of contamination against the affordability of particle board."

Seems like the heat and moisture would be the least of your problems.

Oh one more search and I found this:

Plywood sealer to contain the offgassing.

The intranets is a big place, but once you harness the powers of a search engine you can do/learn anything.

Were it Cuban, I'd be impressed. Brazilian is the "New Coke" variety. :dance013:

Anyhoo... people have been growing in partyboard for years. It's what the world famous C13 cabs were made of.

In the 5 years I've grown in partyboard cabs, never seen a problem related to formaldehyde offgassing.

Formaldehyde is this year's version of Alar, radon, BPA, etc. Remember the scare over pressure treated wood containing arsenic? Now we get to enjoy overpriced "treated" wood that rots within 2 years. It's all just a way for the trial lawyers to get rich.

If you are concerned about offgasing, go harvest your own trees grown organically in your space bubble, start a saw mill, and make your own cab. I'm sure some of the evil commercial saw mills use Teflon coated blades, which we all know causes cancer when heated.

I'll bet the OP has particleboard countertops or cabinets in his kitchen for food storage and prep, yet he's woried about growing a weed inside one. Oh, the irony.

Building the box myself is not an option... I need to utilize a cabinet I can buy from a store..

"We" told me to use particleboard after completely disregarding what I said about Formaldehyde.

So technically nobody answered my question at that point.

I win.

I clearly said I have two options for my cabinet and my own wood is not an option.

lol

Just answer my question or stfu.

Thanks, I can use Google... Looking for someone with a bit more knowledge on the topic.

Please be more pleasant? I was very pleasant. I was responding to a troll.

HOLY CRAP!

Am I hallucinating? Did you just post some real information on this topic?

I knew you were holding out you silly sob!

This is exactly why I responded the way I did.. I asked a legitimate question.. One of the few people who can actually answer that question and is a mod responds with some bullshit..

And here he comes BACK AGAIN with some real info that goes against what all the fear mongers on the internet want me to believe..

I'm not going to blow you for more info so i'll take that to Google and see what I can squeeze out of her.

Lawlz..

Yes! But, does it come in plastic?

My other option for a store bought cabinet is made out of Resin Plastic... It's the same beige garage cabinet i've seen being used in the over priced grow boxes you can buy online...

In the 5 years I've grown in partyboard cabs, never seen a problem related to formaldehyde offgassing.

Formaldehyde is this year's version of Alar, radon, BPA, etc. It's just a way for the trial lawyers to get rich.

Oh those poor Katrina victims. Give 'em free housing, food, transportation, debit cards, etc. and they still find a way to bitch. Nobody forced them to buy a house located 3 feet below sea level, but the American taxpayer foots the bill for their stupidity.

If you are concerned about offgasing, go harvest your own trees grown organically in your space bubble, start a saw mill, and make your own cab. I'm sure some of the evil commercial saw mills use Teflon coated blades, which we all know causes cancer when heated.

LOL See now this is the type of response that is of good humor..

Honestly I had no idea until looking into cabinet boxes that Particleboard contained such a harmful chemical in it's production.

Pretty fucked up considering how much particleboard furniture people buy and how many people die or discover cancer each year.

you can always use metal:party:or carbon composite...
or a cardboard box.....

Yup I see some dumbasses on here growing weed.
