Never understood why folks don't recognize they would pay plus profit for anything that taxes no longer fund.

I used to think political speak of simplifying the tax code was empty rhetoric. But even though the Chamber of Commerce screams we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world, (Japan is really highest) 1/3 of our businesses pay no tax at all. (Even the folks who prepare these exclusive corporations' tax filings pay no tax.) Every year, lobbyists successfully dodge more taxes at the expense of the Treasury and the economy.

These guys have lobbied since the '70s to lower their taxes, saying the economy would boom as a result. As our wages remain stagnant, all we gave them was the largest income disparity we've ever seen.

So, how do you folks against taxes propose to pay for interstate highway infrastructure, stop lights, police, fire dpt and other services essential to keep our country running?

You do realize there are other forms of taxation right aside from personal income tax? Consumption tax, corporation tax, flat tax. There are plenty of taxes. Lack of taxes is not the problem. The problem is we have a bunch of criminals running this country who steal and then waste our money and then come and take more.

The big boys mostly get out of paying taxes anyway. The system works in their favor. It's the working people who are getting suffocated because everything is pushed down to them. We have a social welfare state if you are poor and a corporate welfare state for the rich. You can only squeeze blood out of a turnip for so long until we begin to look like Egypt.

The problem isn't taxes. The problem is the systemic corruption in this country across both the private and public sector. It's fucking rotten to the core. We are the very definition of a Banana Republic.

Anybody remember old Life magazine portrayals of the American poor? We got so sick of seeing pictures of mass squalor we accepted social assistance as a way to help folks rise above poverty.

We once had a tax rate as high as 94%. :yoinks: Some of these same companies now pay nothing.

We all have the right to expect representation as individuals. Giving the same right to corporate entities wrecked the machine.

They could always do lotteries to pay for stuff. Lots of fire departments raise money by sponsering a Bingo night. Originally the state lotteries were allowed based on the pitch they could pay for roads and education. Police have been raising money with policemen balls and just calling asking for contributions, for years.

There's an awful lot of B.S. on this thread; I think I'll add mine. I worked with a crazy lady who didn't file for 11 years, finally her mother took her kid's W2 to one of those storefront clowns. Net result was that she had refunds coming for those few years when she could find her W2s. Why would the IRS come looking for her when she had thousands in refunds due.
This guy could get a handle on if he might owe just by going to TurboTax online or H&R Block online. Free for uncomplicated returns. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do a simple return. The tax prep companies want you to think that it's way too complicated for the average dude because that's how they make their money, but if you can send an e-mail, you can probably do a simple return on a computer.
If he's worried about the IRS scouring the online freebie returns that are never sent in, he's paranoid. If he's still worried anyway he could use dummy names, adresses, Soc. Sec numbers and so on. Half an hour of his time should give him some idea where he stands.

Get copies of your tax transcripts (both Fed & State). If you don't want them to know your address, then have an accountant or attorney make the request for you as your power of attorney. Technically, statute of limitations (SOL) does not expire until YOU file a return--that return the government creates for you (Substitute Return) does not count for SOL purposes--and usually it calculates the highest tax before offsetting against your withholdings.

Possibly the reason you have not had wages garnished are dunning letters is you are gifting the government your money...that tax overpayment they calculated.

If you were self-employed, then you need a different strategy.

income tax is bullshit, i just claim that i only make 22k a year so that i never have to pay a large amount to them. i pay enogh taxes everytime i buy gas, good, or get taxed through BS like speeding tickets and shit.

If they haven't contacted you, then you don't owe them any money. If you did, they'd be all over your a$$....................ask me how I know.
Blind leading the blind

first i must call bull sh*t

second i will bite ,,,, how do you know ?

one day a rep got my dad on the phone and said "we have been trying to find you for 7 years"

guess what ,,,,

he did his multi years taxes and ended up with a $22,000 return

they see the missed years , they dont spend thier time and money doing our taxes for us to see if we owe or not , only when audited

i usually got back $2-3000 a year, so you may want to do them, you will get all those years of back owed money

WOW you must be some rich

why is it ppl have to lie ? does it make them "think" that we think higher of them ?

so tell me walt cunningham , what oil company do you work for ? or what is your legal field ? or how many surgeries did you peform this year ?

I get much more than 2-3k back every year. I work 6-9 months a year, but they tax me as if I worked the full year. At the end of the year, I get back all the "extra" taxes I paid in. I'm 24 years old and don't have a highschool education. There are many ways to make money in this world, you don't have to be a ca$hcropper to make a decent living. I'm not really sure why you think getting back 2-3k is such a big deal.

Well there has been alot of speculation and guessing going on, some of it even done by me. Since there seems to be such disparity between opinions and everyone seems confident they're right, I decided to do what we all should have done and trusted that google is our friend. If you punch in statue of limitations IRS one of the links you'll get is this which sums it up fairly well in layman's terms.

http://www.backtaxeshelp.com/IRS_Statute_of_Limitations.html

Basically they can only collect back as far as 10 years unless certain conditions apply. Otherwise anything more then 10 years old, you got away with. Further, if you paid something (which you did through your withholdings) they have three years to determine that you didn't pay enough. If they don't catch it before three years then again you got away with it. As far as you collecting what is owed to you, you got three years to claim any money IRS wrongly said you owed and two years to claim any refund if you never bothered to file. Keep in mind though, that's Federal tax law. The limitations for state taxes might be entirely different. For example there is no statue of limitations for California State taxes.

Based on the link above, if we take that as the truth then anything beyond 10 years ago you got away with. However if you continue to not file a refund and they do eventually come after you, they'll be able to hit you with a full 10 years worth of back taxes, interest and penalties. My guess is that since they've been kind of quiet about it in your case they either haven't noticed for some reason or more likely they've actually owed you most of those years and so far there's 13 years worth they get to keep and you can't do a thing about it.

It was April 15th of '96 & I was back in NY working for a radio dispatched taxi fleet. After the last train from NYC comes in the shift would end and 8 or 9 drivers would be in the dispatch booth booking out which we were doing that night, although I knew damned well what date it was I asked anyway; "it's the 15th" came several replies and so I said "whoa, April 15th, what do we do about reporting taxes here?" The whole room fell silent instantly w/all eyes on me like one of those old E.F. Hutton commercials only better because of the honest knee-jerk reaction from 100% of the drivers.

Sorry...the Internal Revenue Code does not offer a 10 year holiday. If you do not file a return...then the statute of limitations NEVER expires. But...any refund that you would have been entitled to receive is lost after 3 years. And if you owe big time--there are numerous strategies one can implement that can reduce the economic impact to nearly zero.

Eclipse is right. If you don't file and they catch you, there is no 10 year period to audit. They can go back as far as they care to.

HempKat,

Looks like E420 got it right. I already explained the SOL and for this situation there IS NO SOL, UNTIL a return is filed. That is when the IRS three year SOL starts.

If you file and UNDER REPORT your income by 25% or more then the SOL is six years.

There is NO SOL on tax fraud, so you can be charged with that at any time for any tax year if the IRS believes you have committed tax fraud.

A tax payers SOL to file for a refund is 3 years from the date the return was filed or DUE.

Hey you all I'm just reporting what multiple sites of people being tax lawyers say, if you follow the link I posted you'll see an example of one. This isn't something I'm just guessing at or pulling out of thin air. The google search pulled up other hits to like a pdf of the actuall laws. All saying the same thing that there is in fact a 10 year limit. Now it may very well be that the IRS will try to go for more if you don't fight it and maybe that's why there is a need for tax lawyers and why they can get such seemingly big reductions in what people owe?

The 10 year limit is on COLLECTION of tax--which can be renewed for another 10 and another 10. What we are discussing is the ASSESSMENT of tax (filing a tax return).

For example, lets say in 2000 the IRS audited one my tax returns and decided I owed money. That would be the ASSESSMENT.

Now, lets say I have been hiding, working under the table, blah blah blah, the IRS would have until 2010 (10 years) to collect the money. If I did nothing, they would refile the and the 10 years would start all over. This would be COLLECTION.

I know...taxes are crazy and they do not follow common sense.

IRS-The Biggest Lie and Scam in World History

Friday, 04 March 2011 09:19
'Here it is in a nutshell. The IRS is a private, debt collection agency for the private banking system known as the Federal Reserve Bank. The IRS is not a government agency. I repeat, the IRS is not a government agency. Never has been, never will be.

The IRS is formerly the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) situated in and with authority only in the Philippine Islands (Trust Fund # 61), and moved into Puerto Rico (Trust Fund # 62). In the 1950’s, with the stroke of the pen, the BIR was transformed into the current notorious IRS and brought onto the 50 united States. This was done without any Congressional authority whatsoever. There is no Congressional authority for the IRS to exist and operate in the 50 states recorded anywhere in any law-books. Again, keep in mind, that the IRS is the “Private, debt collection agency for the private banking system known as the Federal Reserve Banks”.

Consider this fact. When an IRS agent wants to seize property from a Citizen in a County, they must first contact the Sheriff of the County and request assistance in the seizure. This is simply because the IRS agent has no authority to seize any property at all. So the IRS agent bamboozles the Sheriff into committing the crime for the IRS. When the Sheriff seizes property from a Citizen under the non-authority of the IRS agent, the Sheriff has committed a Second Degree Felony, Conversion of Property.'
