Aliens?

They are asking for money to keep their jobs looking for something so elusive, when we haven't fully explored our own world. There are species undiscovered, depths uncharted..... so many reasons to stop looking to the sky and start looking around us.

There are other agencies/groups for studying those things, like NOAA for example. So NASA getting money for its programs doesn't really effect our ability to research the things you list. And if you're just looking for the money to fund your research, there are lot better choices for cutting funding than NASA, in my mind. So I think we can and should have them both.

I am saying the amount of money for the reward is insane. And just because I didnt read everyones post doesnt meen I cant chime in on OP :dance013:

you wont see anything on the news about aliens until society is about to hold a global revolution against its various govts. Then you'll see them alright, right there on the evening news, and saucers in the sky, and martial law will be declared, and the people will creep back into their shells and help to fight the invaders, fully backing their respective govts. These aliens will be flying earth built aircraft of course, and anything we actually see will be CGI, and the anecdotal evidence will be from local yocal loonies and highly paid govt officials, but until we get there, don't go expecting to see anyone tell you aliens are here, as they dont need them to regain control yet. Aliens are the back up plan, just something to keep simmering on the back burner for now.

aliens running around talking about aliens would be a funny movie...yeah they may have money for this and that study but we have hungry people on the street in the cold....nasa could surely come up with some helpful devices for the homeless and hungry, m2

nasa trying to get more funding...mo......they need to send a rocket with someone in it to the bottom of the ocean an do some real research on the planet we live on.....get your phuking heads outta space nasa.....space cases...lmao...pun intended

Exactly. The presence of extremophiles has long been known and so has this specific species of arsenic related bacteria IIRC...First thing I thought when I read this was how desperate they were for news/funding lol.

Not alien, but exciting none the less :).
A form of life that doesn't follow the same rule as everything else. Damn cool.

These days, I celebrate every dollar used on science instead of war - NASA included ;)

Well keep in mind there are less obvious rewards from Space Exploration, Tang, Velcro, Teflon, Microwave Technology, Microchip Technology and much more.

Actually...they are working on it.

Lush, ripe tomatoes hang at the end of the boat ride in the Land exhibit at Disney’s EPCOT Center. They aren’t there just for looks. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Disney World are working together in a novel government and industry research partnership.

NASA and Disney are finding ways to use human and industrial waste to provide the ingredients needed for growing edible plants. This technology will be needed for establishing human colonies on other worlds.

Many vegetable farmers around the world are learning how to grow crops without soil. This method, known as hydroponics, is increasing the Earth's food-growing capacity. Wheat and soybeans have already been grown using this method. Future crops will include peppers, other kinds of beans, spinach, oats, barley, strawberries, and herbs. Growing food without soil also has promise for long space flights. Astronauts will grow their own food without carrying heavy soil into space.

Its just like fixing your own problems before you go try to fix other peoples problems, why run around looking for some crazy ass aliens when for all we know they are HERE among us.

so you wouldn't feel better about fixing someone elses problems before your own, you would rather only help your self and not others?

the best way to learn about aliens is to start/take methaphysical course... study kaballa and everything will come to you

I wanna see some real aliens that would be friendly, and would help us and teach us :p.

yea or if we're smarter than the aliens our govt. could "help" and "teach" them and end up controlling all of their lives too
Lol

Just like "we" did when the Europeans arrived in the new world?

Believe me...life would NEVER be the same if real aliens ever showed up. They would treat us as we treat the indians of Borneo. Like we weren't even here. Just another "life form" to deal with. They'd study us...and hopefully show SOME respect...but don't count on it. We'd just be the native "bugs". Like us to monkeys perhaps? Hopefully not like us to bacterium.

Worst thing "NASA" ever did was to send out direction to earth. Someday, someone may just look us up...to out doom. Even IF they're "star trek" non interference believers...introduction day will be a game changer for the human race.

I'm a glass half empty believe on this one...not too hopeful.

In all likelihood, by the time any of our probes are found we'll either be long dead or we'll have advanced enough to the point we could defend ourselves.

And even without the probes, we've been inadvertently broadcasting our existence ever since our radio technology got powerful enough (~70 years). One would only need to follow these signals to the source (Earth).

You know given the point an alien race would have to evolve to in order to go out and make contact with other races and the commitment it would likely take due to vastness of space, it seems highly unlikely they would come here to try to take over the planet. Or to just experiment with us like lab speciemens.

The logical thing would be to just avoid us given our nature.

you got that right.....steer clear of this planet or your ass is in for it;) I would imagine they already have an "alien guantanamo" ready for some "lil green dudes"...lmao

I will peep that link out Hempkat...hope they can make a "water way" for everyone someday in the meantime/nicetime hopefully, mo

tryin to figure out if this is a good thing or a bad thing......industrial waste is about the scariest thing i could think of to get anything from, however im open ears.....

As I understand it the difference is so profound between this bacteria and the rest of life on earth that there are two very interesting possibilities.

It could have evolved entirely separately. As we don't know how many planets have life on them we have no idea how likely it is that life will emerge in the right conditions. It could be incredibly rare, so much so that we are the first to evolve in our galaxy or it could be a foregone conclusion. If it's happened twice on our planet, then it looks like life may be relatively common in the universe.

The other possibility is that it could have hitched a ride on a comet or asteroid from another planet teeming with life. This again indicates that life may be relatively common.

IMO either of these possibilities is worth a few column inches in any decent newspaper.

It's not going to get more funding for NASA though. That will only happen when US audiences are glued to the telly watching the first man on Mars plant a flag for China.
