jiffy peat pellets SUCK

Anyone use those Jiffy peat pellets? WELL DON'T! What crap they are. IMHO. I thought I had a brilliant idea. I wanted to fire up my grow again and I went to Home dePot. I picked up one of their Jiffy pellet germination thingys. They puff up when you put water on them, you put the seeds barely under the surface, put the lid on and keep it warm. Take the lid off when sprouts come. How hard is that? right?

I put 5 Early Harvest(a friends home brewed beans), 5 Couch Lock, 5 CL X CL(another friends home made beans), 2 BOG SweetCindy99, 5 BOG Grape Punch, 5 BOG LSD, 2 Gypsy "Mystery Medley", and 1 bag seed "tiger stripe". In 2 days all the BOG had sprouted. I popped the top off the germinator (as per instructions). They stayed under CFL's, and in the next three days - 25 of 25 sprouted. I WAS FIRED UP! 100%...couldn't believe it! Never happened before. Everything was going great for a couple days. Then BOOM! They all stopped. What the hell??? I quickly took them out and broke up a couple "pellets". Some of the tap roots weren't burrowing down into the pellets, kinda like if you jamb your finger into the palm of your other hand, and were kind of hardening off or something. Luckily I got the Early Harvest, CLxCL, Sweet Cindy, and LSD out of that shit in time and put them into Black Gold soil (My fav). So now all I have surviving is 1 Early Harvest, 1 LSD and 2 CLxCL. Not too healthy but looking better. I'm heart broken. Killer genetics down the damn toilet. Aaaaaaaaaagh.

I use distilled water, No feed, and plenty of "daylight" fluoro to get them started. I blame it all on the Jiffy fricking pellets. They never dried out, and not soggy either. The PH was a little low actually, but...

Any thoughts from you all? I'm stumped. Back to the water soak and paper towels method, or soil germ for me. Never had this shitty luck before. I think I'll sue Jiffy for murdering my best and only beans. Dammit! Piss me off. :fsu:

Haven't had a problem with them yet and I used them on about 20 plants since last oct, although I always noticed the middle was rock hard, so I make sure I break it up good.

I learned that lesson 2 years ago and never looked back. I killed a pile of killer genetics while expermenting

Something about them strangles little sprouts to death.

Others have had success but you don't here alot of it.

Those are the only things I've ever lost seedlings in. I will never use the things again. Strickly dirt in pots or rockwool cubes for me from now on.

probaly the mesh on the outside, and how ya break um up, and wet them b4 planting in them,,, never had a problem with them myself,,, though i did always take a new, sharp razor blade and slice them down the sides after they would sprout, or if the plants in them were clones, right after the first roots show through the sides,,,, gotta becareful doin' this, but i think it musta helped mine survive after reading all the bad luck ppl have with them,,,

 Bag seed is for experimenting, genetics are the reason IMO

I did exactly the same as you, but when I noticed the slower than normal growth spurts (or lack of them) I lifted the peat pellet and cut off all the netting and potted the sprouts into the normal potting routine. Peat dries out a lot faster than the surrounding soil and it's hard to maintain the moisture level the new sprouts need. They are great for vegetables, just not for pot. I still use them to germinate (always works fast and 100%, not like some dark damp paper towel) then get them into the program.

Mentors always told me over and over - every grow is a learning experience. I guess the trick is to learn from the mistakes and absorb the successes to incorporate into your grow. None of us grow exactly as our mentors do - we all have skills that work with our grows and the way we do things. I've always tweaked every grow with new successes and failures, and my bud stash has never been wanting and getting better with each grow.

Yeah - sucks that you had to learn it with quality genetics - use bag seed to try something new, then apply it to the quality.

Sorry you hadda learn the hard way - we all been there, done that. :bat:

Catch ya in chat. :woohoo:

Sorry for your lost, but i have to disagree with you. I've used these pellet and have had awesome result with them. I've grown just about anything and everything in these pellet. I mainly used them after i pop my seeds in the paper towels and then place them in the pellets to grow for awhile. I've also use them for clones to move outside or grow in soil indoors. I've grown everything from
TrainWreck
Hawaiian Skunk
Bubblegum
NYCD
SuperFruit
Blueberry
K2
GreenGaint
and alot more i can't even remember. I do cut of the netting around them, once the tap root pops out. Once they pop out. I transplant them into soil or Hydro. I've had good luck transplanting them into Hydro rocks and Ready-Gro also. Again, sorry for your lost. You can read some of my old thread if you like and can see some of the methods i used if that helps you. Good luck with the rest of your grows. We all have problems from time to time. That's why were here. To help each other out and get through the hard grow times.
Take care

I also never had a problem with peat pellets. I have used them on numerous strains and veggies. Always have healthy roots and plants. Seeds and clones. I don't bother to cut the netting. Always worked great for me. Always. Also there are more than a few of us that use them successfully.

I personally love them. I just drop the rooted clones into my net pots and back fill them with either Ready-Gro or Grow rocks, but i like to cut the netting off them. I find it lets the root form better for me. That's what works for me and i think that's the point. You got to find out what works out for you when your growing. Shit, I've gave the garden guy some shit at Lowes and told them to get some more out on the floor. Guy looked at me like i was crazy. I love them and rapid rooters.
Take care

Jiffy Peat Pots are not for Marijuana!

Jiffy Peat Pots are not for Marijuana!

Nothing from The Home Depot is good for growing. NOTHING. I started working there because I thought that I could get good ideas for growing. BOY WAS I WRONG! We don't even carry 6" PVC or decent organic soil! WTF? In fact, we don't carry any decent soil! Home Depot sucks for growing, but hey, at least I got a good paying job and their management will waste uncomprehensible amounts of money to please customers. Just today they gave me over 3 hours of overtime just to make a delivery for a small appliance order because someone forgot to write it on the board, the delivery was scheduled for ealier in the day and got missed for this reason. Dumbasses. With that kind of money going to waste they might as well promote me to a salarary position to put a cap on my earnings. Man I love my job ;) Not to mention all the hot chicks that wander in to pretend like they're buying stuff just so they can get checked out by the guys.... Free company cell phone... free company ride... oh man... I can't wait untill monday... lol... this job is more fun that my outside of work life... how sad...

EDIT: Some depots actually carry good deals on Flotec utility pumps. $59 for a 1200 GPH pump is not bad. Not bad at all.

Everytime I've tried to use Jiffy Peat Pots my seeds have rotted. They're bad fer growin' IMNSHO. Peat pots can go to hell. Soil kicks ass. Peat pots bad, soil good. I like using a $6 humidity dome with 12 oz. styrofoam cups with soil void of nutrients that might be high in nitrogen because that always leads to a slow withereing death. Seedlings must be nourished gently. Such precious lifeforms they are. Oh man, I'm starting to talk like Yoda... I think I need another beer.

NOTE: The Home Depot employment life may not be for everyone. If you know how to manipulate people and achieve success at all costs then this may be the job for you.

I always roll them around in my hand to break them up.
Just roll it in your palm like you making a meatball.
Some of the layer's never expand, so the root runs into a brickwall.

Well i say to each their own. I've had nothing but good luck with them, but if your seeds are rotten. Well guess what? They are to wet and that's more your fault. Try draining some of the water out of them or rolling them in your hand like Legituser said above. You do have to keep an eye on them, so they won't dry out and also make sure they aren't to wet. Nice to see everyone giving their input on the subject. Even if it's good or bad reviews. That's why i love it over here at IC.
Take care everyone,

:yeahthats

I think that's the one thing with the 7s. They can easily be too wet or too dry, so you have to keep an eye on em like GDW sez. Slightly overhydrate them, then squeeze out the excess, being sure to loosen the rehydrated peat like these cats above said, and i's all good. I think a lot of folks expect em to be instant garden just add water. Sliiightly more work than that but worth it.

I buy peat pellets by the sack. I let them soak up as much water as they will hold, then squeeze out the excess. They are totally expanded and ready for seeds or clones. I have never had a problem. :woohoo:

Yeah, I was lucky..sorta. I learned the pellet lesson w/ bagseed. But any lost plant is a loss indeed. :badday:

Personally i dont think i will stop using pete pellets. I have had very good sucsess using them. As Golddust said i found that yopu should strain some of the water out of the pellets before using them. As if i didnt the plants stem will mush and be useless. The biggest problem i found is that they are expensive locally $12 for a 100. When i first started growing i learned that i didnt need to mist the clones in the pellets. I also had no problem mailing clones in the pellets. HOpe you get some better sucess with em. Peace

I've used Jiffy's from day 1, started out with them on my very first grow, with a 100% germ rate, and never stopped.
