8 Historic Symbols That Mean The Opposite of What You Think

I agree that there are much better sources for sussing out the details of past events than high school textbooks... One of my favorites is reading things which were written by those living then and there, though all are distorted (no eyewitness account of anything is without distortion), truth can be found by those truly looking.

All I ever encourage anyone to do is to dig deeper and learn more.
That's what I aim to keep doing.

I don't disagree with your assertions, arctic...
but here in the US 420 became code for potsmoking because of the time of day, nothing to do with the date 4/20... A group of deadhead kids in Calli used to meet up at 20 after 4 to smoke and hunt for a marijuana field they'd heard about... "hey man, are we doing 4:20 today?" ...The usage spread through deadhead culture...

The things you bring up are coincidental, not causal.

The thread starter is basicly a modern day Tokyo Rose.

Truth of all these so called "misperseptions" is most Americans could give a fuck about the real story behind them. There are no misperceptions with most of these posts. No perceptions at all. Ask a typical person on the street if he knows the real story behind Chief Crazy Horse, and he'll probably think the Crazy Horse is the person asking the stupid ass question. Matter of fact I think I saw the OP on an American TV show called Family Guy, playing the part of one Buzz Killington. :)

No, the OP simply uses these as vehicles to bash America. He has an inbred hatred for the US, a greater inbrededness than even his own family tree, I suspect.

Better yet, go into a bar on the outskirts of Nashville and start spouting this shit. You'll end up being dragged behind a pickup truck and rocks heaved at you, because thats what should happen to people who bring up dumb shit like this. But if they ignore you, switch to global warming. They love hearing stupid shit like that. Especially when they're drinking.

My favorite is #5 =]

You made the smartypants jab at Libertarians. Don't get pissy or act surprised when it stirs the political pot.

And try not insult true Libertarians by comparing them to Beck. He's an establishment whore on Faux News spouting propaganda. That may be the pop culture understanding of what American Libertarianism is, but please some of us have lived in other countries and can see through the sham of modern American politics and the crap fascist propaganda media complex. Some hold political views that bear resemblance to their actual academic meaning and not some Neo two party paradigm nonsense.

Funny enough you seem to maybe have identified yourself as a left-leaning libertarian in this thread. I subscribe to the more classical liberal definition myself, but see much credence in the likes of Thomas Paine as well. This is my struggle between idealism and realism. I'd like to believe we can create a utopia, but damnit if I don't know if human nature can collectively support it in the long run.

It's no wonder Libertarianism is sometimes referred to as the party of paradox.

I've been neither pissy nor smartypants nor acted surprised.
I copied and pasted an article... get over it.

I recognize why one might take offense at #5. An historic icon, recognized by a group as advocating like ideals, being parodied as the opposition by the opposition.

But wait... it's a debatable argument, albeit difficult. I'd hoped to see someone take some of the same quotes and argue an alternative conclusion.

There you go perpetuating the lie. 420 never was about the time of day, until ignorant people started perpetuating this lie and created the phenomenon. And its not coincidental that this lie spread out of America. Im not doubting that high school kids actually met up at 420 to smoke a joint, but thats not why we parade on april the 20th. Im inclined to agree with you however that there must have been deadheads involved :D

Please mate, you are a theology major.. or master or whatever, have you never heard of protestant easter marches and parades? Because you do naturally know that easter falls on 419 more often then on any other date, and you naturally know of the protestant traditions of parades, marches and protests starting from easter? In fact there is a march season with protests on scheduled dates, starting from easter lasting until i think midsummer but im not fully sure the exact date.
419 is not a coincidental date, neither is 420 a phenomenon out of some American high school kids.

Thats popular distortion of historical events right there m8! One of the most stupifying dogmas i know of, worst thing is its so simple and tacky that people dont think to question it. Thats how the dogmas are, over simplified. Dont be so gullible, or make some independent conclusions yourself, dont swallow anything historical thats served to you raw. I thought thats what the thread is about. Dogma. And im not wrong about this.

arcticsun, I'm interested in your perception. How would one go about proving something like that as fact? I mean, you have the "Waldo's" taking credit and even High Times and Adam420 recognizing their claim. I know HT doesn't win many popularity contests around here.

Are there any web sites I can check out that suggest 420 is really 419 + 1? Like I said, an interesting concept.

Does the theology student/thread starter and dogma spotter know about the usage of numbers as symbolic religious reference, if so does he care to decipher the numbers in the High Times address? :D
