By the way, has anybody else been caught in the great Northern Perlite Shortage? Its ugly out there. Saw two guys about to fight over the last 5 bags the other day. Only thing I can get locally right now is Sunshine ginormous perlite bales... at 24$/bale. Some distibutors (major ones) are saying it'll be a month till they re-up. Be glad if your holes are filled.

I am at square one on a new project. Be interesting to see what a hurry-up-and-plant operation looks like comoared to the home gardens.

The price per ton of AAA grape is much different than the price per of ganja so the input cost per return value is very skewed. Also I don't think that I spent that much per pot, but I also paid wholesale plus delivery on my pro mix and perlite and got like 30% off from PVFS on my order...so it really helped..I pulled out my receipts and figured out that I ended up spending $110ish per 100 gallons.. I took delivery out because it'd be different from place to place..

I also don't think that the mix of amendments that I used would scale down well..up for sure..next year I'm tripling the size of everything in the space I'm clearing on my ranch now :)

I'm going to go with 10x10x2 1300 gallon planters next year spaced 20' with 4 per coming out of 20s........I want to coax 20 out of a hole even if I have to cheat and use multiples like NC, H.I.M and IGT...

i know you dont like heavy mixes but pumice i believe is a replacement for perlite. you have to get it from a nursery supplier though. from a big mountain, scooped into a truck bed. and it wont float like perlite.

just a bit.

that is about 25% cheaper than bag dirt plus perlite. just crunching various scenarios... not bad for such a nice mix.

cheapest way to go is greenwaste compost plus perlite and some kind of buklk mixed amendment like Old Age or Sunrise mix Grow... they say that you have to water the product through consistently for 3 days and it will be ready to use. I call bullshit. not gonna bank on it, anyway.

I'm set on bag dirt for the new project. can't waste the veg time... lots of plants will only be 2.5 feet. FFOF is killing the other bag dirt...bigger, greener plants in 10 gallon smartpots. Black Gold is a distant 3rd... Happy Frog is riding the middle position.

Guys, I enjoy in yours conversation, really !

planty, if I can suggest you ... take in consideration, for your soil mix, Nettle and Rice.

nomaad, very health approach to growing and I love your opened mind for other suggestions. Wish ya good harvest.

, man. ... what to say ... I love your chemistry and studios access to growing :)

I put nettle in the compost tea brewer!!! Mad fungal love !@!

I'd need to grow a nettle patch as fat as my ganja patch to have enough to put in my soil..

I'm scared of putting rice hulls because it attracts pests and I already put straw everywhere so I have to let my cats out all the time in the garden and I'm scared of termites...

I am going to try putting coarse lava rock in next year to my new beds. I also don't like that the rice decomposes in the bed because I needed its water holding capacity and aeration...especially towards the bottom of the pot. I am going for some island style next year with my 1300 gal islands of soil... :)

20 pallets RTU soil in my future...and hopefully some perlite too... if they have made enough. Might even go for Happy Frog for the small savings on this one. It will make for one HUGE veggie garden next year when I replace it with a new mix.

Planty: is you soil intended for reuse next year?

Any good mix can be reused bro. I will be planting a cover crop and releasing handfuls of earth worms in to each bed..then adding back what needs adding to get to my levels and then plant away.

I will use this years mix x4 for my 10x10s ...I'm not even joking about shooting for 20+ from those. I decided to put 1 per and my strategy for vegging them is to use my 10K MH veg room and put a half a costco car port green house kit over each 10x10 with a 45w and get them planted ASAP...Feb or so if possible......then pull the GH plastic back and use the frame as a giant cage.

This thread gives me wood more than my chick does.

So every time I think I have my questions answered another one pops up.. Got 9 of our plants out a few days ago and the rest going out this weekend. I only had time to put a few gallons of water over each 100+ gallon hole before I had to get the vehicle I borrowed to transfer them out back.. 2 days later the land got 3/4" of rain. This made me realize I have no idea how X amount of rain equivalates(is that even a word?) to x amount of gallons of manual watering. Ultimately all I'm wondering is, how much rain, roughly, would be considered equivalent to a normal medium->heavy watering manually. This will be useful for me to determine if I can skip a day watering since it's an hour drive to/from the area.. I'll have some pics this weekend, too, finally. I'm going to take my good camera out this time.

You're talking about 2011? LOL. I'm going to be either riding ass deep in powder or sitting on my porch in El Honuragua pretending Babylon doesn't exist in February. Any schemes for world domination begin no earlier than March 1.

If I were looking for 10x10' of coverage I'd just take the canopy off a 10x10' popup. Easy up, easy down, easy to store when you are not using it. They have 12x12's too.

Farmerboy: thanks. welcome to ICM.

Sounds like fun, but if you were having Warren Miller time with Nomaad fantasies, let me bring you right back down to reality. I suck. Just so you know. Still interested? Might actually go back to skiing this year... totally fucked up my body trying to get back into riding this year after years off. I'm not trying to get hurt any more than I already am. For me, its more about just spending time in snowy mountains. I have as much fun sledding with my kids as i do on the slopes. Last year, we timed our family week in Tahoe perfect and got fresh snow every day for 9 days. At least a few inches and as much as a foot and a half.

i ran into a tree going warren miller, put a hole through my mouth and concussion, i was 13. Went back the next year, split my dome open witht he back of the ski doing jumps off moguls at sierra at tahoe...be carefull!!

just fyi garden is doing well, looks like sun comin up!! i put out some straw to get the containers temps up, i was gonna start mulching but i figured with all the overcast id let them precipitate as much as possible till the real heat comes on and i have to conserve water more, but even without the mulch the ground cover works great for light and heating your smarties ;)
