Yes! this drives me crazy...

I know many growers with computers that play games alllll day or f%^& around on facebook...then bug me about their plants' problems..what def. is this? ever heard of this strain? ...lazy fu%^ers!! Go read on ICmag!! It's amazing that people don't take advantage of the internet more..everything you could want to know is there.....oh yeh people are lazy, I get it now....no wonder facebook is so popular.

Face Book? You mean the sites that leave you open to security problems because you post everything about your life!? There a waste of web space in my eyes and need to be removed. I would say Hulu should go, but it keeps me from illegally downloading shows. Tv is my wind down time before bed. :joint:

having a friend who has worked in a few part stores, i have heard some horror stories he has told me.
there are A LOT of people who are just like that who go to part stores, straight up idiots.
supposedly its frustrating to deal with people like that on a daily basis. who would have thought...
be thankful that isnt your job...

It was my job i worked at Advanced Auto for a while. I never had too much of this happen to me, while i was there. i was usually dealing with the commercial end. I sold to the shops, ya know the little office in the back room where the used oil bin sits. That was where i would be. I would believe most of the horror stories to be true. pleasing customers is harder and more frustrating than turning wrenches.

Yeh, reading definitely is the way to go... I can' t stand people who won't at least read the instructions BEFORE asking for my help...

I've noticed that growers in-particular are quite industrious and do much of their own work for obvious reasons. That being said, I have a huge vegetable garden, do all my own maintenance/remodel work on my house, service our vehicles, build a lot of my own furniture etc etc etc. And people at times think you are crazy to put in all that work instead of just calling someone, then they wonder why they are upside down in 15 different loans, and 1 pink slip away from living in the streets...

This is so true. I work in the IT field and i would say 60% of what i learned has been from reading Blogs, Forum posts, and watching Videos.
Shiet i even read an article on how to change out a water pump on my old Sentra saved me a couple hundred bucks and i learned something new.

And read a strategy guide to Mafia Wars on FB :)

Exactly

That's me in a nutshell, I guess we are almost forced into learning, hvac, electrical, framing, plant biology and many other things, but I have always been a do it yourself kind of guy, it save money, and there is pride in it. A lot of people these days don't know what pride is.

Bro you nailed it with the pride comment.
A few years back my brother ( mechanic) bought a run down cottage full of problems.
A few months and a lot of hard graft from the 2 of us with 0 help from contracters and he now has a beautiful home thats restored to a standard no contracter could ever match.

Back when I was in school, if you were so inclined to learn a trade, they would teach you (Vo-Tech - I chose automotive/diesel technology).

By my junior year, I had a part-time job in the industry earning great money for a HS student. Was only going to school for half a day, to work, and had only my general studies to look after.

The point is, do they even still offer programs like this?

And there are just some people who are not good at translating written words into physical reality. Not spatially inclined, if you don't like to use the term 'mechanically'.

My wife tried to change her own wiper blades once, just to impress me. She ended up with a gash down her arm and bled like a stuck pig. To this day, I'm still not sure how. :dunno: :biglaugh:

Sure, if it was really important for her to do it herself, I'm sure she'd eventually figure it out. might cost a windshield though. If an AutoZone employee who does it everyday, and should know better can break a windshield, how good are my wife's odds? :D

Easier, safer, and cheaper than medical bills and repairs, for her to have someone else do it. :joint:

Not lazy, just leaving it to people who know.

They still have the classes around, but I don't really know if they do all that good. I was suppose to be signed up for auto tech when I passed my G.E.D, which I did (it was too easy). I had purchased all the required supplies and showed up.
When I went to the admin to sign in for my first day, he looked at me and said that I wasn't on the list. Even after I showed him the written contract between myself and my guidance counselor, he said out was out of his hands. At that point I just said EF' this there not wort my time. I was 18 then and I wanted to be out of the system.

I wonder if she got her arm on the spring or the underside of the wiper arm. They can be sharp. Sheet metal will cut you and you won't feel it. I know I spent a year at a welding shop. I went from parts cleaner to welder in 20 days. I have scars that will never heal from both burns and cuts. I had a drip of molten steel ~1400*f drop right on to my arm just above the glove. There is an ugly scar about the size of a quarter. I knew i was in trouble because i didn't feel it.

For some of us, it is fear. I do not like automotive tasks,, nor electric, both scare me, because I only have a basic understanding of them. Yes, I do my own wipers, cause I have had to many times, not cause I like it. Everything I ever did on any vehicle was always under stress, so it is easy to see why I do not enjoy it. And I am just a pussy about electricity, I will do it, but I consider the job for a moon or two to make sure I am ready, not very effective, but I still alive.

i would say the term mechanically inclined reaches way far past changing wiper blades and changing tires. mechanically inclined people are able to see what is going on and able to diagnose something when the time of failure. most people can wrap their heads around how a car works but most people are afraid to start.

i started with my dirt bike some years ago and have moved onto tearing into pretty much anything that happens to break on some cars around the house as well as some neighbors vehicles.

works out as a great way of supplemental income once the right people know your skills.

We're definitely not lazy or unmotivated we just chose more carefully the things in life that tweak our interests.

If it wasn't for the outdoor grow my garden and veg garden would be featured in gardening mags and my pups would win any show they were entered in.

On average I spend 2 hours a day exercising the pups and 4 hours in the garden...lazy my ass :)

Be fearless! Come over here I'll put a grinder in your hands and you will be throwing sparks at 7000rpm in no time. Sure it can take your hand off but that's the fun. I could hand you the whip from my buzz box and let you experience handling 1500volts, while forming 3 pieces of steel into one. :)

I've tried to imagine being one of those people that can't do anything for themselves. I end up doing repairs for a lot of people I know because they can't.
Why did you buy that pre-made furniture from walmart if you can't put it together? I've made furniture from trees. Can't put together your kids toys? It comes with instructions so why am I doing it for you? Can't replace vacuum hose on car? I'm not helping you yet, but keep on asking I might feel sorry for you eventually and do it after I'm done tearing down and rebuilding my transmission. $2k at the shop, I'll do it for the $100 cost of bearings myself.
Plumbing, hvac, most construction, electrical, auto, anything really I can do. I might not know how to do it now, but a few hours on the computer and I will learn.

A lot of schools are dropping their auto, woodshop, etc classes.
I spent so much time learning math that is worthless because I still have to look up the complicated formulas to do the calculations. Google gave me a way better education than the public school system.

I just feel sorry for the people that never learned to do anything for themselves. Coming from a middle income family with parents that rarely pay someone to do something for them helped. I find a lot of rich kids don't know because they didn't need to. A lot of the lower income levels don't know because they had stupid parents that only taught them how to order from mcdonalds and change the channels on the tv. If welfare feeds you, clothes you, provides your housing, you probably aren't going to learn anything else that would be more difficult.

I actually enjoy taking cars around town listening and feeling for noise/vibration. Except when it's my own. A good diagnosis can cause an issue when the costumer want half the job done. i.e. wheel bearings. They just don't understand it's best to do both at the same time. If only one is dragging or grinding, they think there getting cheated when in reality it is cheaper to fix both. There have been times that I would have to point out my certs.

The wuppets have their own half of the garden, hyper boxers have paws like back hoe's that destroy anything green :) bless them
Doing mechanics for your self saves money, last bike I bought came with the first 2 services free.
I told the dealer I do all my own services and repairs and got 300 euros knocked off the price of the bike.

It pays to be handy with spanners :)

That's not common around here. Dealers don't really like independent mechanics. They always lose money to them. They prefer you to use there in house mechanics, so that they get any and all profit. Here they are ~2x the cost of your normal corporate shop like Midas, or Monroe. I don't know if you have those shops in your neck of the woods, but i'm sure you get my drift.
My mom has a kia that she sent to kia's specialist to find out why it sounded like it had a massive knock. They said they went through the engine twice and didn't find a problem. It was odd no mars on bolts nothing looked as if it had been moved, all the bolt markers lined up. I doubt they did what they said. It was under warranty at the time, otherwise the tear down and labor would of cost more than the car it's self. When the warranty doped I replaced a belt tensioner and problem solved. Found the noise with a stethoscope It makes me wonder if they knew all a long and were just waiting till the warranty went out to do anything about it.
