hey dg, i bet the lenses he was using SEEMED similar, but they were no where near. good Nikon lenses that pros use cost over $1000 each, and nikon makes them look simular to all their others. if you were running canon L lenses, then maybe it would be a fair matchup.

DG, very good points about the f stop and shutter speed. Those can be adjusted with most cameras though, not just SLRs. Those are some of the key settings for getting a good picture. You've got some great shots in your Trichome Jungle, that's for sure!
Thanks GMG! I'm really trying...lol...although it takes me hundreds of shots to get just a few I'm somewhat content with. I have made a bit of progress, practice...practice...practice....making the right settings to capture varying DOFs to all become 'in focus' seems to be my main nemesis at this juncture.
You might have a good point...although this was taken into consideration during the side by side shoots. What I've come to understand a bit more about the differences between the two (Canon vs Nikon) is that it's more about the 'processor' differences. Long story short...lol...the processor inside the Nikon (D90 for example) and the processor inside the Canon (50D for example)...although these two camera bodies are considered 'somewhat' equal (consumer level comparisons)....the processor inside the Nikon is better (IOW, you'd have to have a much more expensive Canon in order to get a processor comparable to the Nikon in same category of cameras). I guess you could say.....more bang for your buck with a Nikon.
Taking everything into consideration, I think (at this point) I will keep the Canon EOS 50D...and simply upgrade my lenses to L's....esp the macro lens.
Here's a few recent examples of what I've been able to accomplish without upgrading the macro lenses to L's. (Still wondering WHY Canon made L's 'white'...lol)
I have a D90 with a prime macro lens. Im very pleased with this camera. Total cost of this setup was 1500$, Like DG I dont have much experience with this new setup.
What mm is the lens you used Hammerhead? You said 'prime lens' but I'm not sure what that means.

This is very interesting.
Dutchgrown, I just bought the new Canon 550d Rebel. Have you seen it? I was looking at the 50d and especially the 7d but this new rebel is truly remarkable. It has the same size sensor as the 7d (although doesn't work exactly the same but very very close) and also supports 1080p full HD video. Good enough that a few episodes of the show "24" were shot on dslrs. I was going to get the 50d for build quality, but the research I did showed that it is probably on it's way out. That and total lack of video put me off. I could have got the 7d but then would have no extra cash for lenses.
I also looked at the d90... I really liked it, but again it was released in 2008 and a replacement is due sometime this year. (I really really wish they had a current model)
Ultimately I went with the 550d because it was $900 with kit lens (efs) and the in depth reviews on dpcamera and other websites have shown almost identical picture quality when compared to the 7d. It was a steal. If only it had the magnesium build : (
Have you checked out tamron macro lenses? The guy at my photo shop recommended a tamron macro for me... I'm going to use the kit lense for a few weeks until I settle on a good macro and probably buy the 18-135 efs you have as well.

Well...for me....video was not a feature that was a decision maker in selecting the 50d. I already have a separate video camera that is a 1080p HD....so I was only after the camera body really.
I don't know much about the tamron macro lenses....was just looking at Canon's 'L' series lenses....ouch....but they are of pro quality.
Does anyone know if these tamron lenses you speak of are comparable to the quality of the L series Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM? I'd rather not spend $1,400 on a Canon lens if there is a better option out there.

all i have to say is subcool shoots with a D series cam and his shots have made HT mag cover all the D series nikon SLR cams with 18mm lens kick arse for macro but like stated above crop out 1024 x 1024 of your pic and F stop and shutter and ISO all have a major part to do with macro shots along with something to hold your cam still so no hand shakes while pushing buttons or movement while shutters and stuff are open taking the image

The tamron lenses are definitely not as high quality as the the "L" series Canon, but my photographer knowledge factory at the local camera shop has nothing but good things to say about them.
1080P Video camera??? Wow that was a pricey toy I'm sure ; 0.
The 550d ended up being a perfect fit for me as a first time dslr user, but I truly envy the higher build quality in the 50,7 etc D cameras.
Actually it wasn't too outrageous, still pricey, but....lol. I was in SE Asia when Sony introduced a new model, which still wasn't available yet in the West, and got a decent buy on it duty free closer to the source, at the Sony store there.
I've heard good things about the rebel models....in fact my dentist uses one when taking those awful mouth stretched open before/after images.

Maybe I'll just keep the Canon AND go get a Nikon to add to the collection of what seems to be a never ending 'gotta have' the next camera toy (lenses).

Nikon D3 here with like 30 years of lens collecting (all still work on my camera, Yeah Nikon).

Chemdog makes for some really great pics! You should get some super nice trich shots too for us all to drool over, since CD gets so trich loaded!
I can only imagine what someone with 30 years exp can do!!

I'll do my best Dutch, there are some really good photographers on ICMag.
That was one of the factors that lured me out of lurking into active membership, it's the underground version of National Geographic IMHO. You are right about the Chemdogs putting out the trichs, at 31 days they are way more covered in trichs than the two other strains in the room about two weeks from harvest. My wife, who knows nothing about growing just the end product, always gravitates to the dog remarking, damn that stuff sure smells good.
Can't wait to grow out the K.Q. but I only have room for a small 3x3ft tent now-a-days.
Hehe, retirement is a mixed blessing.

If you looking for a good deal on a DSLR hit up Slickdeals and keep an alert open for "slr" or "dslr" i get notices quite a bit on d3000 deals, sony deals, and every once in a while a nice Pentax Kx deal. you can pick up a Kx for about 400-450 with a 18-55mm lens if you look good enough. Id rival my little Kx sensor agains cameras costing 1500-2000 and i dont think there is a dslr out there that will match its low light performance in the aps-c arena. Not only that but i would say pentax reigns supreme if you want to use older lenses. the pentax k mount has been around since the 80's and there are thousands of lenses out there that mount right up. In body stabilization is great too as your not dishing out a grand for a nice fast lense! did i mention how great the pentax primes are!?

I am more of a Canon person myself. I shoot for a living so I am very particular on my gear. It needs to work very consistently for me will very little problems and I have found that Canon does that best for me. I also love full frame. I should be getting a 5d Mark II pretty soon. That camera has some amazing low light capabilities. Pentax does make some great cameras though. It really just comes down to what ever you are comfortable with.
