Motion Detector to turn things off

My own cabinet sits in a small bedroom/office inside my home. I have one of those cheap $10-$15 square box fans you can pick up anywhere in the window in that room. On low, it makes more than enough noise to completely cover the sounds of the three PC fans that are constantly cooling my cabinet.

In a room that allows access to regular traffic and is only 8ft x 10ft, nobody has ever asked about the fan noise.

Just saying, maybe you're trying too hard to be MacGyver here and there's an easier way.

By reading the thread, in post 15 GrnMtnGrwr says

but its fireburner that we are helping here not GrnMtnGrwr.

Fireburner, if you can't figure out the wiring from looking on the side of the cube pm me and I will help you. I'll check back here every 1/2 hour on the hour so try and meet me here. You should see a diagram on the side as someone said above. The coil will be a little rectangle with a line coming from each end of it to a number, that represents the number on the base. you want to connect the fan through the pin #'s that are closed on the diagram. there will be a / representing a throw arm or switch that will connect the dots representing a normally closed contact.

cocktail frank, I wouldn't suggest anyone use an open relay unless they know what they are doing. They would need to put that thing in a box to protect from shock, and that involves way more work. Those things are a thing of the past my friend.

Why are you people helping this guy wire his grow box up to be a fire hazard?:wallbash: This is the WRONG way to go about stealthifying your box...

Gentlemen (and perhaps ladies). Let us complete the task at hand. I appreciate all the side advice I am getting, I really do, but I would greatly appreciate assistance in finishing the task.

I have attached several pictures that should make it easy to guide me in the right direction. I have color coded it to make it easier to provide advice.

I've said it several times... you're wiring up a switch to turn off your exhaust fan. Grow lights = HEAT, unexhausted HEAT = PROBLEMS.

I am going to be running a 400w lumatek digital ballast in a unheated garage in the midwest (this maybe a problem in the summer). I don't think a 400 watter will jump the temps that much while the fan is off for 5 minutes. Knowing what I just told you, what is the probability of something going wrong?

I can't help you there, sorry. I just see this kind of thing as overly complicated. I would either cover the noise with something else, or muffle the noise so it's not noticeable

Who is the electrician here? Who deals with this kinda stuff everyday? His cabinet is metal, how is that going to start on fire? As long as he isn't stupid about how he does this there will be no fire hazard if the light is on and the exhaust is off.

Fireburner...where is the base for your relay? You posted a pic of it, but I don't see it. I wouldn't wire it the way you have. In theory its right, but your just asking for a shock or worse with it like that. I would like to see you put that relay in its proper base and then wire it up with the terminal screws provided.

Also, I would like to see your switch and your plug in an electrical box. Get an 1110 box at home depot with the appropriate covers and connectors.

fan = fan plug
all green grounds need to be connected to your metal boxes, to the bare copper wire from your power supply, and I would screw them to your metal enclosure as well to ground that.

I couldn't get myself a relay base, they didn't have one at Radio Shack.

I already have a box, I just didn't say I had one. I got one of those two bay (sp?) blue boxes. I don't have the components in the box because it isn't wired yet. It isn't wired yet, because I don't how to wire in the relay.
