Alleged pot grower stole his electricity from city grid, sheriff's office says

<!-- Video goes here -->The man allegedly growing marijuana in a school bus buried in his backyard in the Southwood community was stealing electricity from the City of Kinston to power the pot-producing operation, the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Capt. Jim Oldenburg said Lensey Dail, charged with maintaining a dwelling for producing marijuana yesterday, tapped into the city’s main grid and was feeding power through a 110 voltage wire into the bus 8 feet beneath his backyard at 2179 N.C. 58 South. The city is the retail power provider for that area of the county.

“He was stealing electricity from the City of Kinston through what is called back feeding,” Oldenburg said. “He found a source into the city’s grid and tapped into the line to get power for free.”

A series of drop chords fed electricity into the lamps from an 110V wire, he said. The sheriff’s office estimated operating costs of the grow would have doubled Dail’s electrical bill, if it fed off his home account.

“This guy is a jack-of-all-trades and master of none,” Oldenburg said of the self-employed concrete pourer. “He is knowledgeable enough in the engineering of many different things to get by in making them work.”

The office’s Sgt. Eddie Eubanks said Dail took out the seats of the bus and divided it into two sections to grow two different types of marijuana with heating lamps.
“From the back to the front, there was minimal walking space in the bus,” Eubanks said. “It was tight. He used every space he had available.”

The bus was buried under a tool shed 30 feet from Dail’s house. Eubanks said a hidden door in the shed led to an opening in the ground and steps leading down. From the hole, authorities were able to access the back of the 40-foot-long bus, where lower qualities of weed were housed. The higher quality marijuana was stored in the front.

“In the back was regular Mexican/homegrown weed, and in front was, what is called, Purple Haze,” Eubanks said. “In these, you could actually see a purple lure in the buds and crystals showing.”

The sheriff’s office said the regular Mexican/homegrown weed sold for $900 a pound; the hydroponic weed, for $3,000 to $5,000 a pound.

Eubanks said Dail had two standing heat lamps, one in each section, running on timers, and 50 LED lamps mounted on the ceiling, each with a couple of hundred of red and blue bulbs, which he said were running continuously.

Also running nonstop Eubanks said, were oscillating fans and an AM/FM radio playing rap music, to make a healthy habitat for the plants.

“Many people believe it is healthy to talk to plants,” Eubanks said. “The plants were very healthy and green. He knew what he was doing, in terms of keeping the pH level right in the soil and the plants pruned so they would not overgrow.”

Lenoir County Sheriff Billy Smith said Dail watered the “bushy” plants manually with garden hoses and buckets. He said a PVC pipe ran underground along the wall of the bus to provide access to water beneath the ground.

“It was really wet and damp down there and very humid,” Eubanks said. “When you walked down there, you could have taken your shirt off, it was so warm.”
The sheriff said Dail dried the plants by hanging them in plastic grocery bags along the ceiling or by storing them in tool boxes on the floor. He is unsure how Dail was able to dig the hole, nearly 1,000 cubic feet in size, to fit the bus.

“He had to fix it where he could drive it down there,” Smith said. “You just don’t pick up a bus.”

Smith added the grow was the first of its kind here.

“This is the first one we have ever had in Lenoir County that has been underground,” Smith said. “You hear about these types of grows in law enforcement magazines, but never see them. Most grows are built in closets or along creek banks and in tomato patches. He obviously researched this and knew what he was doing.”

Eubanks said Dail admitted to being involved in dealing drugs, but has not confessed to building and designing the grow.

Dail’s wife, Desiz, and Jerome Murriell, of 1447 Cobblestone Drive, were also charged in the Tuesday bust. Authorities say she knew Lensey bought and sold dope.

Lensey Dail, a convicted felon, and Murriell were charged with conspiracy to traffic marijuana, possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, selling and delivering marijuana and maintaining a vehicle and residence for marijuana. These two remain in custody.

Desiz Dail, who made bond, was charged with trafficking marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for marijuana.
Oldenburg said more charges are pending against Lensey Dail.

He was growing many types of bud because we shared genetics and also he had a veg /cloneing and flowering room and not 2 differant types of weed as stated. He is in good spirits and has a very good lawyer and was told his worst crime was because of the electric stealing. He did not tell the cops shit so i know i have nothing to worry about. He got his lawyer there and refused all questions as well as everyone involved. Yes all involved are out on bond unlike the story said.

Oh yes the music part was fucking funny. He would just jam out down there and smoke a bowl while trimming. It was not for the plants to jam to, LMAO.

Yes and he dug the hole with a spoon, lmao. He had a backhoe in the damn yard. The bus was lowered into the hole, cant drive something with no fucking motor.

He did not admit to dealing drugs, just another lie from LEO. He does have a record for prior pot charges so his lawyer is trying to look for LEO mistakes to try and dismiss the whole thing but i aint sure that will happen but you never know.

The power company discovered the electricity stealing and that lead to the whole thing. It just amazes me how LEO tells the media dumb stupid lies. All involved knew the risks and all of them knew to not tell the cops shit when pressured until there attorney was present.

He aint laughing about it but he told me on the phone that life goes on and he knows they won't get additional charges and the ones they have besides the electric theft most likely will be for growing and not dealing , they only found a small amount of mexi-weed that he couldnt give away. Leo is just trying to spread media lies to influence the whole case.

He had HPS lights and NOT LEDS like stated. He had a few cool tubes in each room with a few flouro's. It was not a huge grow like there trying to make it look like. Just a perpetual grow to keep us good old southern boys happy , not a drug dealing OP.

Leo cant find us all but i wouldnt recommend stealing electric because the power company looks hard for that shit and i told him but he been growing for over 10 years i know of and thought he could get away with it.

What an interesting, detailed write-up!

What a setup! An underground bus! Clever. Too bad he got popped!

Question: Is it wise to be adding your own details to a case that is pending? You might make things worse for your friend.

I'm just sayin'...

one of my h.s. friends has an uncle way up in the dea and it's almost always the financials that get people caught or stealing power. that or having someone involved who blabs. . . . still, i'm sorry to hear about this and i'll be thinking about your friend . . .

Wow, thats a damn shame. Sounds like a real nice setup, I would have loved to see some pics. My parents used to talk about burying a bus as the normal thing to do for growing pot in the 70s. I'd always something I had in the back of my mind. Bummer about the stealing power, sounds like he could have gotten away with if forever...

when we get greedy and don't fly under the radar shit like this happens and what gets me is how can a guy be so smart as to set up a sweet grow area thats so stealth and blow it by digging his own grave by stealing electricity, I bet he is asking himself that same question now?

Good story. Sounds like they are confusing quality of weed with flowering and veg plants haha.

LEO is bitches. The underground bus is phenomenal, a damn shame about the electricity though. I think the guy deserves props for ingenuity, if not security.

it was all over HLN news with those exact details eing reported. damn shame he didnt need to steal the power if you ask me

Interesting to hear the media version, then what really happened.

Always suspected they BS'd details like that, but wow, that is really calculated to make him look bad and foolish.

Good luck to your friend, gonna toke one for him now.

What a setup, and all the work that went into it. Wish he had used a generator, or set up a dummy "welding shop" in the shed and paid the power ...
