So if it is legalized(complete, federal level), will prices be outrageous because demand will go through the roof with every Tyrone, Derick, and Janelle running out of the grow closet to buy seeds?
OR
Will it drop prices from $30 a seed for delicious JH to a mere $2 ala burbee pack?
Can the breeders and sellers still make a profit if there is such a drop-off? Or will supply overwhelm the system, and when LEGALIZED we'll be paying $120 per beano?? OH NO!

I think they will drop some. I think it's going to take a while for a national stabilized market to surface. I imagine something similar to the wine model. The government also has a stake in keeping the prices high. Especially right now.

That`s a good question. I vend seeds and already hold my prices down to $50 a pack(of ten seeds) even though I could get a much better price. It takes me about two and a half years working with a cross to make it stable and there are alot of costs involved with it so I`m not making that much money as it is.My gess as cannibis becomes legal two things will happen.Seeds will be more mass produced and costs as well as quality will go down or depending how the laws are written seeds may become scarce to come by unless you are a comercial licenced grower and prices will go up. I gess a lot depends on how the laws are written and on the market as to how many people will still grow there own or buy corp. grown cannibis.I know I`m getting old and have health problems and so do many of the other older seed venders so we can`t last for ever.Much knowlege will be lost as time goes by and much of the older strains will also be lost or crossed out as more time goes by as well. But I won`t be around to see it happen anyways.

seeds are so cheap. When you have thousands invested seeds are the least of my worrys. One 1k bulb cost more then most seeds. Seeds are cheap, people pay more for puppies, cats, and dogs for breeding purposes, which die. A seed can produce a plant that can produce clones 4ever. I am not asking for it, but seeds would still sell at 600+ a pack.

If legalized, breeding will become necessary to make the good money. Selling seeds to people of your strain is like giving people your patented product. Wine makers don't go giving out recipes, otherwise they would be broke, everyone would have it. Having something no one else has it what makes you money. 10 years after legalization, large companys may pay 50K for rights to agenetic or even more.

I would pay much much more for seeds, after your dialed in thats all you can improve upon. People sweating 100-200 a pack crack me up

Well, wherever you go, im sure you will see the fruits of your labors :)
Profound post Sir. Which I think should be a post unto itself. "What the wise 'oldtimers' can teach us", and how to pass the information along to as many as possible, before its lost. Much could be lost during this dark prohibition period when good people have to hide themselves and knowledge.
Thanks for your work Sir.

Opps am getting old! I didn`t notis this thread was a pole! I`m not sure, maybe at first they will go up until ether demand drops or they are mass produced? I gess I`ll vote for the jelly rolls as I don`t know, but do have the munchies! I know my seed prices will remain the same and I already have more orders than I can fill, mostly because of the time and work envolved making them and also because I only work at it when I feel well enough!

I been growing now for close to 50 years and have been making seed for most of those years! CannaCompulsory you are amoung only a hand full of people who have taken the time to say thank you.I have had a lot of people who grew out my work thank me and tell me how thankful they were to get my genetics but very few people thank me for just the hard work I`ve done. You made my day!

You made my day!

well thats good to hear, you also made mine! There is also only a handful of people who can do what you do, and have not succumb to the puritanical nonsense that has been thrust upon us in only fairly recent history by authoritarians, that just dont like what the ganja does to its "loyal subjects".
:) Thanks again.

it will get lower when legalized...companies cant compete with homegrown players with good genetics UNTIL companies can bring A+++ dank for wholesale price

ok, heres my opinion... once bud is legalized, bud will be sold like packs of cigs and the people who own the company will try to find the strain that produces the most yield and wont care bout the potency and it will be like ciggerettes at the end

IMO they will rise at first as more folks chase the good genetics and the seed co can't expand that quickly. Pent up demand.

Then the corporate boys will move in within a year or so and the seed cos will expand and things will start dropping and probably keep dropping.

I think seeds and weed would severely drop in price because I also think over time completely legal weed on a federal level would create a perfect competition with huge corporations supplying the product, as exists for tobacco and alcohol. I'd love to get five dollar a pack marijuana cigarettes and the operating costs can't be that much higher than tobacco on such a massive level.

That's one of my biggest problems with the whole idea that the feds couldn't effectively tax legal weed- when's the last time you heard of a tobacco addict growing his own supply in order to save money? Hell I smoke pipe tobacco with papers and you'd be surprised how cheap of a habit it can be.

(I also firmly believe in the forbidden fruit theory that any spike in demand would be more than offset by the number of dumbass teens not trying the drug because it's no longer very taboo at all- look at Portugal)

portugal..PORTUGAL??!? But really, I think teens will be dumbasses regardless. I mean alcohol is legal for all intents and purposes, and not really taboo, but didnt stop us from getting shit faced when we were youngNdumb:)
I also think legalization will not decrease use in the US, or demand for quality seed. It's too ingrained in our society, and I personally think demand is pent up and ready to pop, i.e. 14 states now have legalization, some full i.e. MA...
