hey everybody.

How's it goin?

Got a quick question... hope someone can answer for me.

Could I use a 65w CFL(or higher) found in some home security lights in a normal light socket wired on to a regular wall plug? Are these bulbs self-ballasted or do I need some sort of ballast/wiring etc.?

thanks

I think the security lights need a separate ballast from the fixture to work right. If you are getting it locally just keep your receipt. If it looks like it does not have room for a ballast it is probably not built in. I wonder if you could use one of those as a remote ballast to keep temps down.

Yes, I have used 65w's in a normal sockets (they are self ballasted,) but anything bigger than that will need a different socket.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the info. My flower cab has just enough room down the middle to supplement with a 65w bulb which would bring my total wattage there to 260! I'm gonna try to get one hooked up tomorrow and snap some pics of the process.

Thanks to both of ya.

KING's Guide To CFL's

veg-5000k-6500k full spectrum (6,000-8,000 lumens per sq ft)
flower-2700k-3000k warm white (8,000-10,000 lumens per sq ft)
Remember with CFLs wattage doesnt matter LUMENs are key. To find the sq ft of your grow op measure the lenght an width of your grow space an multiply them(make sure u measure your space in feet). More is BETTER!!!

Are these numbers correct?

If I have a 3x2 space, which would be 6 Sq Ft, according to this formula I would need 60,000 lumens to flower in a 3x2 space. That would be 32- 37w CLF at aprox 1800 lumens each. I can't fit 32 lights into that small of a space.

again, are these numbers correct for lumens needed per sq ft?

If these numbers are not right, how many lumens would I need for a 3x2x5 space?

Lumens are NOT cumulative. You can't 'add' them.

When designing your space, think about watts, not lumens.

I would go with 8 42w cfls for that space as a starting point and add more if needed.

Have you thought about running a HID in that space? A lot of people run a 400w in a 3'x3' space and yours isn't much smaller. You could run a 150hps or two or three 70w hps.

What about 2-43 watt 2700k and 2-30 watt 5500k in a 1.44 cubic feet of space? thats what I am going for in my pc
any feedback would be welcomed
thanks

This is what I have learned regarding lumens Luigi4Bud...
look at the lumens on your lights (look em up online if need be, you can usually find them). Let's say you have a 23w and it gives off 1900 lumen. 1900 divided by 23 will give you your lumens per watt. Then compare bulbs.
hope that helps

Honestly, I an scared of messing with HID because of heat issues in small spaces plus, this is my first grow and I want it simple as possible. I don't wanna mess with heat issues that can get out of hand.

I was thinking 3 plants in a scrog grow with 6 lights (6500) for vegging and then more light or higher wattage lights (2700) for the flowering. NO HID for me in this small of a space. I would be worried sick the house is burning down when I am not there.

I am confused, how does this square with what CFL King posted:

flower-2700k-3000k warm white (8,000-10,000 lumens per sq ft)

it seems he is saying you need 10,000 lumens per sq ft, which for me would be 6 sq ft., which would be 60,000 lumens, an impossibly high number for such a small space. Should I focus on wattage instead of lumens? If so, why would King post such a confusing formula?

look at blynx's pics and read-------

it works well in small cabinets----

my flowering cab is 40 inches tall [internally]---
my lamp array and cheezy reflector takes 10 inches---
my containers [1/2 gal milk jugs--cut down] takes 7 inches-----
that leaves 23 inches for clones-----
