This information is very misleading, most of that information I believe is talking about city's that are bordering other countries not the whole Netherlands. I highly doubt this proposed system will work but I guess we will see.

I would like to know where this imaginary Holland is, probably everything is based on the few square kilometers you've seen around central station.
The Netherlands economy is not turning on weed, it's worth nothing in comparison to industry. Holland is not heaven to live in, so what if you can blow, that's about it! for the rest you must pay through the nose for, and people like me have to pay for the drugs tourist, get nothing out of it as the money goes into the black money circuit. I'm a dutch resident and blower but understand the mood of the population, which the majority don't blow it's only a small procent that do. So stop coming, stay home and grow your own.

I would think this is the biggest boon to street dealers as now tourists will have to buy from them, and there will be plenty on offer!
Think how many dope tourists will get ripped off or worse by these guys. Such a shame that the Dutch want to criminalize products they make lots of money on. Oh, that's right, prices go UP when that happens doesn't it?
I bet that's one reason for it. Dope tourism must be way down due to the economy, esp. in A'dam. Also the exchange rate makes it prohibitive esp. for American who have to pay like 150 euros ($220) for a decent hotel room in A'dam.

Yes, foreign tourism spending has been down for years, and it took a huge nose dive in 2009 - but the recent coffee shop closings around the borders must have put a huge dent in spending by foreign tourists in those (formerly) busy areas. That might account for the sudden drop in foreign tourism, no?
I can see it from the Dutch peoples' perspective, especially those who live in Amsterdam. Every year, the city is filled with tourists for long periods. It has to be frustrating for the locals trying to shop, work, and live their lives. Inexperienced ganga smokers get dazed and walk into bike trails, stopping traffic, generally getting in the way.
The Dutch have been taking heat since the 1970's from neighbors objecting to their drug policies. Much of the Dutch economy is dependent upon trade and investment in foreign countries. Reducing the highly visible drug tourism pleases both trade partners and angry citizens at once. What actually happen is unclear, given the snails-pace movement of Dutch politics.

If you ask me it's all spin created to cause panic amongst the worlds smokers who rush out there to have a good toke while they can. This isn't the first time they have made this announcement and sure as hell won't be the last.

I checked his bio and he looks typical fascist. I noticed that the Maastricht coffeeshops had surveillance cameras watching customers, and were fingerprinting their customers a couple of years ago. The mayor must have been responsible for those "experiments" as well.

Maastricht is close to three borders, is a small city, and has complained of being overrun by French, Belgians and Germans who come to the Dutch coffee houses. The city has also accused the foreign tourists of hard drug trafficking and other misbehavior. This has been a big issue for years, and was the reason for fingerprinting and surveillance in Maastricht.
The Maastricht coffee houses are changing their rules to require membership cards and payment by Dutch debit cards. This will exclude foreign tourists from Maastricht coffee houses.
AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam has said that it will close 50% of its coffeehouses, but does not plan to implement the card membership pilot, so tourists can continue to shop in Amsterdam coffee houses.

So, I'll still be able to get a prostitute nice and legal, but now I've to worry about adulterated cannabis from the black market. Amsterdam will definitely start to suck. 
But seriously other parts of Europe are having to deal with poisoned tokers. People are getting lead poisoning from weed in Germany!
No shit, foreign black marketeers are putting anything in the weed: lead dust, glass particles, sugary syrup to make it look like trichomes: all in the name of profit. The Dutch are getting mad because they get their neighboring eurothrash. Becoming just as dumb as those same neighbors won't make everything "good".

the BORDER towns that decided to try this scheme are facing suits from the EU over this. It is ILLEGAL to discriminate between nations in the EU, and they cannot require people from the EU to be treated differently than others. this will fail in the courts.
Either a law must cover the entire nation or not at all; Holland cannot, as a part of the EU, require member nation people to be excluded from any business. The major sticky issue is that the idiot Dutch politicians that are behind this are trying to get around the law by only saying that dutch isued debit cards can be used to buy weed; but this means that those paying cash would be discriminated against, as well as all others who do not bank in Holland.
We would see vast numbers of people trying to get Dutch bank cards so they could buy weed, and that they do not want. It is not hard to open an account in any international bank, and there are always means of getting around any rules that limit the weed.
We will win; in time Europe and South America will come around before the USA does, and decrim. will do away with many restrictions that bother us now. Of course it is never soon enough, but the battle is being won, in stages.
DO NOT WORRY!! Cofeeshops will remain in Holland...the BORDER towns ONLY may have to deal with nonsense in the courts for a while, but remember: People who want ganja will get ganja...no matter what. WE cannot be stopped, if we stand together.

As an American I would rather take a cheap trip to Aruba and buy weed off the street, chill on some nice beaches and do a smoking hot Columbian prostitute. All much cheaper than going to the Dam.
