Today's lesson: Never go cheap or half assed. Always use a quality bulkhead fitting or a proper manifold when setting up hydro. I'll second the pond liner. It's cheap insurance.

I had to learn this the hard way. $5 saving on a fitting isn't worth 40 gallons of pain.

I think the worst leaks are the ones that are so slow you don't notice them until they've been going for oh. . .8 months. . .and you've rotted out a floor joist. . . I just thought I was topping off a little more frequently and because of where it was leaking, never saw the tiny trickle. . .

lemmie tell you about pain in the ass repairs. . .

the Lion is going Guerrilla...
One of my friends was setting up some dwc tubs and cheaped out and bought the cheapest ones that he could find. Needless to say he had filled up three of them(roughly 15 to 20 gallons each) and the first one he filled started to crack. When he jumped up to start taking care of it, and bumped into one of the others and of course, it broke and took out the third and final one. This all took place in a third story attic, and ended up flowing threw the floors, walls, and heat duct all the way to his basement. He called me to help him clean up and it took us most of a day to clean it all up(what we could get to anyway), and weeks for everything to dry out.

Saw a dude around here that made a frame out of 2x4's for a Rubbermaid reservoir... All around not a bad idea.

pond liner, or most grow tents have an extra waterproof bottom, i had about 20 gallons spill before, not sure how, guessing a hole in my rubbermaid res, bought mad sham wows, kept soaking up the water and ringing them out for a couple of hours, switched to some GH res' and haven't had the problem again, I also once was bubbling 40g of water in my kitchen in a big 50 gallon rubbermaid, and I went in there the next morning and there was about 4 inches of water left, but everywhere around it was dry, even a cardboard box that was like right next to it, and the people downstairs didnt have any damage, so i was kind of bugged out and confused but somewhat relieved, but this crap happens. and you learn from it to try to keep fortifying the system

Years ago I had a huge tin water tank right at the front door which decided to split spontaneously. Chillin' with my girl in the living room one day, then explosion, then 2 seconds later the floor is several inches deep in water. 2 to 2.5k gallons. :( Best of luck cleaning this up mate, hope security is not affected.

I wouldn't ever run hydro in a two story, especially if it was a rental (not sure if it is). Either way, it already happened now how to fix it.

Does the roomie need to find out, already found out? Any way to hide it?

fans, shop vac

OR

get yourself a rug doctor and tell him you got a bug up your ass to steam clean the carpets and thats why the floors are wet????

Had a friend run about 2000 watts in a 2 story and the drains went through the floor and the res's were downstairs. They used hand water via pump once per day. Height in the room was at a premium and no way to keep the res's underneath the trays.

Damn, that's horrible. This is one of the many reasons I never really wanted to go hydro. I love soil for many reasons, but a big one is that it doesn't ruin a home if you spill a huge bin!

Good god, man that's no fun. I had a float valve on my res turn a bit on me once, and the RO overflowed it.

Since then I now install an overflow fitting into EVERY reservoir, tied into the drain valve (after the drain shutoff valve so it's full time) and have never had a flood since.

Use worm gear hose clamps on all fittings and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN OVERFLOW FITTING! I use a E&F screen fitting over them on the inside of the res so a coco chip or hydroton pellet can't clog them either. Cheap cheap insurance!!

Its scary some of the responses in this thread.

If you dont take proper precautions or learn how to drive and you get behind a vehicle, do you blame the car or driver?

Plan B is essential in this line of work and it seems like you had to learn the hard way.

Growing soil or hydro has nothing to do with this disaster. It all came down to poor planning or not thinking things completely through.

The upside to this is you will prolly never let it happen again. Sorry if I sounded like a douche but I wasnt gonna let the hydro haters turn this into a scapegoat thread.

Good analogy, bad conclusion. It DOES have something to do with the method, for this kind of accident is next to impossible with soil grows (unless you're a doof and you spill your watering can on the way to the garden). My only point in the post above is that anxiety about water accidents with hydro setup's is one reason (albeit not #1 on my list) I chose soil.
