I also posted this in the Growers Forum but I might get better help here...

Tonight my girl will get her first good night's rest...err, I mean, my plant will no on a 12/12 light cycle finally. I know there's a few tricks I need to know to ease the transition and minimize and problems like stretch. The strain is generally unknown, but the guy who gave it to me said the friend that who gave it to him said that it's Jack Herer. Although it looks very sativa dominent in the leaves, it's behaving more like an indica how dense and stout it is. So I'm not sure how much it's going to stretch, but I have the screen so it should be managable.

I'll number my questions to make it simpler to answer:

1) Do I want mostly blue light or mostly red light while she's in the stetch mode?

2) Using the locas formula, drop the micro at first sign of pestles, right?

3) What's your opinion on trimming leaves, or even bud sights?

4) Anything else I should know?

your footprint is 5 sq ft

i m o---
absolute minimum would be 15 --23 watt cfls---=3 per sq ft

i think 20 would be working better--thats 4 per square ft----

i am not a expert---

go with the 20 if you can---
if you have to use 23 w cfls

I see you're on your first non-HID grow too. How do you like the CFLs? So far in veg they've done a good job for me.
I'm planning on keeping a PL-L CFL grow going for head stash, always. The quality is just amazing. 3000K for veg and flower is excellent. :D

I'm on day 26 of the second run. Things are looking much better with the hydroton instead of lava-rock, in my home-made drip system. (sorry no pics yet)

home depot has 14w cfl's on sale right now 1.85 for a 4-pack and each bulb gives off 1000 lumens, would it be a good idea to throw 20 of those in a small 1.5sq ft cab? instead of five 42w bulbs... the wiring would be alot more but it might be cheaper in the long run and maybe more lumens per watt?

14w = 900-1000 lumens
42w = 2400-2600 lumens

(3) 14w = (1) 42w

so your getting 500 more lumens with every three bulbs replacing one 42w

also one 42w bulb costs anywhere from 7$ to 15$ depending on what kind and other factors whereas a 4-pack of 14w cost under 2$...you do the math :D

just something for you all to think about :D

I think you would be trading lots of light penetration for even coverage. Would have to be a scrog for those to perform. I think the 42w would be better for most grows.

hey, what do you think about the 150W ecoplus CFL...the 6500k temp version.

i'd like to use this in a pretty small space with not very powerful ventilation... dead silent is what i'm going for. is this the bulb i'm looking for?

I contacted the manufacturer, Sunlight Supply, and asked for a copy of the spectral power distribution graph. Keep in mind, they market this thing as a grow lamp.
I apologize this information is not available at this time.

What kind of kelvin would this aquarium light be? I never see purple on those colour charts. Would this be like, 10,000k or higher?

14 23 watt lights will toast your plants. 6 will grow them nicely.

15 is more for my 16 square foot flowering thing/box that's 5 feet tall.

are you saying that you have experience with 1 26 watt cfl per almost sq foot-
that flowers----

i hope you can tell me how to do it...

because in my experience---
2 26 watt-cfl-per square foot will barely get the flower to 1 inch long..

??are you talking about 5 cubic feet--
or 5 sq ft--footprint????:yoinks:

uber dude
whats the penitration difference
between 26 and 42 watt cfl???

is there a rule of thumb about penitration

I would choose the wattage based on what type of grow you are attempting. If you are going to scrog, it might be better to have more sources of light (23 watters) giving an even light spread for an even canopy. If you are trying LST, SOG, or 12/12 from seed, I would probably use fewer well placed 42 watters because they are going to provide more light to the lower budding sites. Whatever you decide, keep the plants very close to the bulbs.
