This thread is awesome, and really gives me a few ideas to work with.

One question I had for you LifeLess, did you have any moisture problems? Did you ever have to remove any water from the bottom of the tub or anything? Just curious!

Keep up the great work!

yoga i did build a smaller version of the one i posted. Right now im working on a good size that works with these comp fans. I think i have it so ill build another and get pics so i can post a DIY. Super easy. Cost is about 35 bucks.

khaleel Thnx

Spence What i use is 2- 3inch 90 degree pvc in the sides of the bottom box. Just face them down. If stealthy ness isnt an issue just mount the fan to the back center of the top box. If it is get a 6 inch 90 degree pvc and face it down and mount the fan to the outside. Duct tape works well. Keep me posted spence.

Whats up Dude thnx man. I used a single 600

Thundurkel I used a single 600 for the first time. Cfls put out some real nice bud and i will never say diff. Some people dont have the room of need to keep it small. These buds from this Hps are so much diff than my cfl buds. Way more resin production and the smell is 100 times stronger with the finished dried buds. Havent toked any yet its still curing. If you can get yer hands on a hps do a run and see for yourself. you wont be disapointed. Ill still be running my boxes but this 600 is going in the closet in place of the boxes. as for quality being better id say no just bigger. Nothing gets better than all our homegrown cfl or hps.

Welcome Polish If you hold off a minute ill have a good small diy carbon scrubber for the boxes up.

Boom ty much just doing what the boards and the people that contribute to them taught me.

Hello Midwest thats a great ? and yes i do. To much water sitting in the bottom brings up mold issues. Using these boxes for so long i kinda know how much water to give as to not get that pool in the bottom. Heres what i did at first. Pick an end of the bottom box and drill a 1/4 inch hole in the 2 same end corners make sure there low enough to let water out. In the oppsite end put a 1 inch bolt threw the bottom same end corners. They will make the box sit on an angle so the water runs out the holes at the other end. If you take one of the lids and place it upside down under the bottom box it will catch all the water that comes out. You can soak it up or let it evaporate. I soaked it up. I can get a pick if you need. GL and keep it green. Peace LL

Heres a final pic of my hps grow. This is my Indiana Bubblegum

Okay, jeeeez! on the bubblegum. great first hid grow!

I just finished my growlab to meet almost every spec you've incorporated in yours lifeless. I've also decided to go with the 4/42watt 2700k's. Did you ever add those T5's or any other supplemental lighting that you were talking about?

Great idea also for using the lid with a drain hole in the bottom!

I will post some pics for ya once i have this scrubber installed...I used almost all the same pvc fittings that you did and also found some great 100mm (3inch) 2000rpm fans that really push the air!..using activated carbon in some mesh pencil holders. Alright, LETS GROW!

Glad to hear back so soon lifeless!

Today a fellow enthusiast gave me seven budding plants. Thats right, seven little girls in three different stages of development for me to try out in this box. The oldest one is about three weeks from harvest and is 'bud on a stick', straight with one main cola going all the way to the first couple of nodes...The other six are a few weeks behind her and are much more branchy. All are the same strain, an unknown, with strong citrus (lemon specifically) scent that has a hint of pine and most of the shade leaves only have three leaves.

Today my temps were a little higher than what i'd like...90F @ the top of the box by the lights. but if thats as hot as it gets then i should be okay. Airflow seems great throughout and scent is minimal with some dryer sheets in the fan pvc.

promise some pics soon!

Man I been looking for you forever. I saw when you first started this thread and said...err uhh that looks like a good idea, but never got the chance to do it until recently. A few questions though, Would it be ok to go with 3 2 1/2 gallon pots or will they stretch too fast? When Should I start 12/12 like as in plant height when should i start? Thanks and Great Idea

Muy Grande you will be ok with thise size containers. I only bud 4 plants per box each bloom run. I always pinch the tops to get some good branching. Id say no bigger than 10-12 inchs. If there 12 now pinch them back alittle and they will bush out. Peace LL

Sorry to bother you again! Lifeless :) But in regards to painting the insides, did you have to rough up the inside with sandpaper or anything to get the paint to adhere? I was considering possibly using krylon fusion for plastics in a white matte finish, however, it's cheaper to use interior house paint. Is it just interior house paint and it seems to adhere ok?

Thanks again dude this grow has inspired me beyond my wildest imagination! :)

No bother Midwest. I used sandpaper to rough up the inside 1st. And be sure to let the paint dry good. I like to paint the box,put it all together and run it for 24 hours on for a few days. That gets a good cure on the paint. feel free to ask if ya need. Peace LL

I wouldn't do anything to the surface if you can shell out the extra couple of bux for the krylon fusion...thats what i used on the inside and out (flat white, and ultra flat black accordingly). Works amazingly, but be prepared to use a couple of cans per container, top and bottom.

Lifeless, when did you go down to just four plants per box?

Do you find that you can get more branchy plants this way? I am running seven girls in one gallon pots for my first run but would really appreciate your input on this. Is it strain specific?

Oh, and i moved my box to a colder spot in the room...near a window. Totally solved my temp issue (these things run on ambient temps). Im now running 75f during light period and the lowest it has dropped at night is 68f. Is this ideal or too much flux?

Yo! Spent the morning and a couple hundred dollars at home depot followed by a growshop and my favorite medical dispensary, a spot in little ethiopia-- clones, they were $25 a pop but the owner hooked em up for 15. Hindu Kush, I grabbed 5 healthy samples. I was quite astonished at my ability to wire lights without destroying anything, and by the massive amount of light produced by those four 46 watt bulbs. I was thinking about adding some little tubes on the bottom, 55 watters a-la high-pod. But I have ample time to take care of that.

I will make a thread some time, maybe tomorrow; I only bought one can of primer and one of paint and the light blleeds something awful. Tomorrow I will add a couple more coats of white on the inside and paint up the outside with a nice simple camouflage; maybe let my neighbor get artistic. He's from the Streets.

I pretty much have copied your basic design; I'm plugging 3 4" holes with one 100cfm whisperfan ($40 from the hydro store, comes with wall plugs) on to which I will toss some charcoal. The guy at the hydro store says that activated charcoal is super expensive and hard to find and that its cheaper to drop $80 up on one of their carbon scrubbers. I call bullshit and plant to make a very simple scrubber with an elbow of pvc and two layers of nylon stocking (gorilla glue around the edge). Elbow points down and gravity holds the charcoal even. And I mustn't waste time, the clones already smell so nice and my tubs are presently five feet from my bed. Once they get poppin it could interfere with my sleep...

I really dig this for being fairly self-contained, and I very much like the rather bulbous shape of the thing for reasons of light and reflection. It is just so much more efficient and effective than a boring box.

I've got the bug... once I get the box nice and settled I will start on building situations for my vegetating plants and mothers, and something nice and bubble for the clones. And I've got to try a one plant thunderhouse like the high-pod. And there's coco, hydro, dwc, scroc, sog... all these fun avenues of medicinal satisfaction.

And if you dont mind, do you just pour away with a watering bucket or do you also use a spray bottle on the leaves with nute water? I'm curious, as no one seems to mention this much and I'm wondering if the leaves should be kept dry, for oxygen purposes.

thanks and rock on, lifeless!

kish your right that krylon fusion paint is good stuff but its alittle pricey. If you dont have the cash go with the cheap stuff. You can always repaint in the spring when ya have some extra cash.
Ive been doing 4 plants for awhile now. Ive done 9 plants in 1 gallon containers in 1 box. Youll be watering alot but it works. Only blooming 4 plants instead of 5 does get them bushier. Do it both ways and see what works for you.
You did good moving the box to a new location. 1 comp fan can keep the box cool as long as the ambient temp is good. With the temps your getting now youll see some increase in growth. Keep me posted. Looking forward to seeing how things turn out. I should have the DIY for the carbon scrubber up this weekend.

Orestes welcome. I myself never spray the leaves with anything. I water the soil only. GL LL

One last question:

The CFL lights, I found some 2700K 42W's for flowering, whatcha use for veg? like a 42W 5000K or so?

Or just 2700K the entire time?

Thanks again

2700 all the way threw. Best to use the first set of bulbs only a few runs. Then use the older bulbs for only veg and new bulbs only for bloom. Youll get about 3 blooms per set of bulbs. After that youll start to see a drop in bud size. GL LL

Interesting fact about the bulb life LL. good to know...maybe i shouldn't have bought the cheap 27k's. Oh well, they're growin...

Hope you don't mind me posting a few pics...thanks for the inspiration!

I pretty much stuck to your specs for air evacuation, container size, bulb size, etc. you will notice just a couple of changes.

I'm excited to see your carbon scrubber LL...i have the parts to build mine but haven't finished the design just yet

well, heres my handiwork...

here are a couple more pics...you'll notice the rubber coated paper clip LST method i adopted from Lifeless along with the box design.

I have also switched all four bulbs to 42watt 27k's since these pics were taken.

Notice the zip ties...they hold both the pvc and fan in place. The black around the fan is gaffers tape (the kind used in stage/concert production)...the tape is only used to seal the duct work, not to hold the fan in place. It's a 100mm pc case fan...only manufacturer i can find that makes these is 'scythe'..and they fit perfectly on the 3" pvc

cant wait to see the LL carbon scrubber!

It is funny that you have all this knowledge and experience but just used HPS for the first time! I would imagine the real difference is the DENSITY of the buds. I had to go in the other direction, from HID lights to CFL's because I left the house (and the bitch lol) and moved into an apartment. I am nervous that my first run will be airy but I'm keeping them as close to the light as possible.

My plants are 1 week into flower today. I'm using a tub much like yours. Luckily, with my 8 cfl's using 240 watts of light my temps are just fine thanks to my 130cfm comp fan :rasta: . My six plants are grown in coco coir in 1 gallon pots fed a variation of the lucas formula. I flowered them after 4 weeks in veg to keep them small. I have two stackable metal risers like the the one lifeless uses so they are very close to the lights.

Lifeless, have you ever considered using coco? I have limited experience in growing but from what I've read it's superior to soil. When I transplanted my current plants from soil to coco (after 1-2 weeks) they just exploded in growth. Its really easy to use too, especially with H3AD's formula.
