Ambre's Bogglegum, Lifesaver, & MagicalMystery Grow

G

Guest

Since the first few days of a grow don't have a lot to report, I've waited until now to start the grow thread.

Aug 15:

I put 11 seeds in to soak
4 Bogglegum
4 Lifesaver
3 Magical Mystery Mix (Thanks Gypsy!)

Aug 16:

All seeds sank. Transferred the seeds to perlite in plastic cups. The cups had several holes punched in the bottom to allow drainage. Several seeds had cracked open shells.

Aug 18:

5 seedlings popped up in the morning; by evening there were 9 seedlings visible.

Put the seedlings under 2 20 watt daylight (6500K) CFLs.

In the meantime, I've been working to get the garden area ready for the plants. See my Build Thread

Aug 20:

Garden area is ready and the seedlings have been placed in their new home. Lighting is 2 30 watt daylight (6500K) CFLs and one 30 watt warm circle CFL. Started feeding with 400ppm nutes since the perlite has no nutrient value. All seedlings are showing their first set of real leaves.

BG=Bogglegum
LS=Lifesaver
MMM=Gypsy's Magical Mystery Mix

BG1 about average
BG2 is barely doing anything (looks runtish)
BG3 small to average
BG4 is stretching
LS1 about average, some stretch (Mutant! trifoliate :alien: )
LS2 is just starting (looks runtish)
LS3 about average
LS4 hasn't popped
MMM1 about average, some stretch
MMM2 about average, some stretch
MMM3 hasn't popped

Aug 21:

Took a complete set of pictures of all the seedlings today and will continue to take pictures of each one every day for the first couple of weeks. This will give me a visual reference tool for future grows.

Aug 23:

Cut light from 24/0 to 18/6 to reduce heat problems in the middle of the day. Temps outside are running in the high 90s to low 100s. I don't know about the plants, but I'm melting!

Aug 24:

Plants growing very well. Second set of real leaves showing on several plants. Added another fan to the grow area to stir up more air. One of the larger seedlings has roots coming out the bottom of the cup, so it's time to transplant the 6 larger seedlings to the bubbler. Initially, I'll use the small cloner unit since the plants are small and transfer them to the tubbler with air pots and hydroton when they are a bit larger.

Transfer to bubbler accomplished - no shock or problems; the seedlings are loving it.

Aug 25:

Seedlings in bubbler are still doing great. The second sets of leaves are growing nicely. Here are a few pics:

Lifesaver #1 (LS1 - Trifoliate)

Bubbler Unit

Bogglegum #4 (BG4)

LS4 and MMM3 still have not popped; I am going to give them a few more days, but I suspect those two are duds.

That brings the summary of the garden up to date. Feel free to ask questions; since this is my first grow thread, I have probably left out all kinds of things in an attempt to not get too awfully boring.

Ms.Grat3ful - Thanks. It's been a few years, but I had a lot of my old notes and spent a lot of hours refreshing my memory & learning new stuff on these forums before I started. You should see the "library" I have collected on one of my flash drives!

Dandaweedman - Variety, as they say, is the spice of life! That's why I have 5 more varities on their way from Seedbay right now. The little foams are pieces of foam pipe insulation coiled so they fit into the 1" holes in the bubbler. They support the stems, they will compress as the plants grow, and the larger hole means I can get the roots out without damaging them as could happen with a small hole.

There is visible growth in the babies this morning compared to last night. I suspect they will be ready to go into the large tubbler this weekend. :smoke:

I just germed 3 bogglegum seedlings myself. I almost killed them when I started them in a plug tray that dried out too fast. I moved them to peat pellets and they are doing much better. Growth is a little stunted

Big Toke- Yeah, I decided if I was going to put the time, money, & effort into doing a grow again, I wanted to have something worth smoking at the end! The only difference in cost is what it cost me to buy the seeds - it takes the same amount of my time & expense to grow good genetics as it takes to grow bagseed.

As a matter of fact, I just got my new order from Seedbay today - I got one of the Nirvana 4-packs (Aurora Indica, Bubblicious, NLxBigBud, & PPP) and C99xBlueberry as my freebie. I couldn't resist putting 3 of the C99xBB beans in to germinate.

Immortal - The stunted growth could have happened anyway. I've got 2 BG & 1 Lifesaver that are very tiny compared to the rest of the seedlings. The LS looks normal, just tiny; but the two BGs are kind of twisted and odd looking. They have had exactly the same water, nutrition, light, air, etc., as the rest. That's one of the reasons I put some of the new beans in to germinate - I'm afraid these three just aren't going to catch up with the rest.

Actually both the cottledons and the taproots shriveled up on all of them, I had a fourth that diddnt make it. They have been up for a week and im just seeing the second set of true leave starting to emerge.

I already have 2 bogglegum mums but i decided to germ the rest of the seeds to find other interesting phenos. I planted 2 more bg seeds i got from my last grow. I expect theses to be comming up in a few days. I will be comparing growth rates.

Immortal - Mine sprouted about 8 days ago; one of the BG runts is just now showing a second set of leaves and the other isn't. The bigger plants are already putting out their third sets of leaves. I guess I can't expect them all to be perfect.

Good luck with yours!

Update 8-31

Update 8-31

Here's an update for the grow bringing it up to today, 8-31-05.

8-26

There is visible growth overnight from the plants placed in the bubbler.

Got my new order from SeedBay (the Nirvana 4-pack special with the C99xBlueberry for my freebie). I couldn't resist putting 3 of the C99xBb seeds in to soak.

8-27

After soaking for 24 hours, I transferred the C99xBb seeds to perlite in plastic cups to germinate.

LS3 is showing some growth, so I transferred it to the bubbler since the roots are long enough to reach the water now.

8-28

Emptied the bubbler res & refilled with fresh nutes (RO water, GH Flora, 2/2/2 [ml/US gal], TDS 430, pH 5.7).

8-29

C99xBb2 popped up from the perlite this morning. C99xBb1 popped up in the evening. C99xBb3 started showing late in the evening.

Threw out the two seeds that never popped from the first set (LS4 & MMM3).

pH in bubbler up to 6.2; lowered to 5.2 & increased PPM to 460.

8-30

C99xBb3 looked odd, so I gently uncovered it. It was all twisted around even though it had been planted pointy side down. I removed the seed husk & re-set it in the perlite.

C99xBb1&2 looking good - cotelydon leaves opening.

Moved BG2&3 into the bubbler even though they are still pretty small; at least the roots are long enough to reach the water. BG2 is clearly a sativa pheno with slender leaves; the rest of the BGs appear to be indica with wide leaves.

8-31

C99xBb3 is not doing much; the cotelydon leaves are still closed and it almost looks like it's shrinking. I think this one is going to be culled pretty quick.

C99xBb1&2 are both showing the tips of their first real leaves.

Changed the nutes in the bubbler tonight. GH Flora 2.5/2.4/2.5 [ml/US gal] in RO water, 4 drops Superthrive, 2 caps 3% H2O2; 510 ppm; adjusted pH to 5.6.

Eye Candy - all 13 days old

LS1 - the trifoliate baby

BG4 - top & side views (very nice tight internode spacing)

MMM2 - top & side views (also nice tight internodes)

For good measure, a shot of the bubbler unit showing all 9 seedlings

Awesome thread(s), and I like your style! I've bookmarked this one as well so expect me to come along for the ride.

PS: I am very envious of your trifoliate! I hope to acquire one someday when I purchase some of BOG's genetics.

BuzzBoy-

Thanks for the good words! I'll be posting an update on Wednesday - the plants are growing great guns and are starting to develop branches.

Trifoliates seem to be pretty common with Lifesaver - I've found several other posts from people who had/have them. Indications are that they are usually female and can be quite potent. I hope both are true for mine!

Update 9-07

Update 9-07

Here is the update bringing the grow log up to today.

9-01

Today makes the seedlings 14 days old. pH in small bubbler is rising (5.7 in the morning and 5.9 in the evening), but the bubbler only holds 1 gallon, so that's not unexpected. PPM is also dropping quite rapidly (530 in the morning to 500 in the evening). Larger plants are showing the 5th set of real leaves.

9-02

pH still 5.9; lowered to 5.6. PPM 520 after topping off res w/400 ppm nutes. Raised lights because plants were getting too close. Added a bit of H2O2 to reservoir since temps are running high (82-84F).

9-03

Topped off res w/RO water; 430ppm & pH 5.8. Larger plants are starting to grow branches from the lower nodes. Need to transfer seedlings to larger tubbler; this one is getting over-crowded. Compare this photo to the one in the last update:

9-04

Small bubbler at 400ppm; pH 5.6. Transferred plants to larger bubbler that holds 8 gallons of water. Mixed nutes 2g/3.5m/7b (ml/US gallon) for 670 ppm; pH 5.5.

9-05

Added more lights for a total of 115 watts (actual) of 6500k CFLs. Res at 690ppm in morning, 680 ppm in evening; pH 5.4. Water down about 1/2 gallon, so I topped off with plain RO water. This brought ppm down to 670; pH 5.3. Added about 1/3 cup tap water to raise pH a bit (my tap water is about 420ppm & pH of 8.8 - makes a good pH up substitute).

9-06

Bubbler at 660 ppm, pH 5.6, res temp 82F. Down close to 1/2 gallon again. Lifted one end of the lid so the fan could cool the res temp a bit. Garden temps are up about 3 degrees with extra bulbs on and reflectors on the sides restricting air flow. Plants are still growing VERY well. (3 hours later, res temp down 1.5 degrees F, so the fan is effective at cooling.) Added 1/2 gal RO water to top off res.

MagicalMysteryMix plant 2; top & side views:

9-07

Bubbler at 630ppm, pH 5.6. Res temp 80F. Down 1/2 gallon again today.

Plants are growing very quickly. 20 days old; compare this to the photo from 3 days ago (above):

Bogglegum #4 top & side - this plant is almost 7" across!

The trifoliate Lifesaver is also doing very well. It's at the back of the bubbler where it is difficult to get clear overhead pictures, so I'll have to update with pics of it later.

Update 9-14

Update 9-14

Time for another update.

9-08

21 days today. Plants are growing very rapidly. Using about 1/2 gal of water a day.

9-09

Added more nutes to bring ppms back up to 670. pH staying steady at 5.7. Need a second bubbler because the plants are starting to overlap each other already.

9-10

Bubbler still using approx 1/2 gallon of water per day. Added a second bubbler and more lights to spread the plants out more. I had trouble getting the root balls through the 1.25" holes in the bubblers. I guess that I'm going to be flowering clones instead of the original plants because I doubt I'll get the root balls out again.

Bubbler 1

Bubbler 2

9-11

Spent most of the day working on the flowering garden (link is in the signature block).

I changed the rings in the empty holes in the bubblers to ones that leave the center open for ventilation. This brought the temperature in the bubblers down by about 2 degrees, but has increased the amount of water being used because of evaporation. Added 1 gal water to each. TDS down by 40-50 ppm since yesterday (factor 7 meter).

9-12

I topped the first plant (MMM2) - it's getting too tall. It's also branching very well and will be ready to cut clones shortly. Bubblers down about 3/4 gal each; had to add some more nutrient to bring TDS up again.

The trifoliate Lifesaver is doing very well and very pretty - here is a picture of the top as of today.

9-13

The plants are already over-growing each other in the new bubblers. I should be able to cut clones from most of them on the 15th; I could cut clones from a couple of them today. Here are some pictures.

Bubbler 1

Bubbler 2

Here is Magical Mystery Mix #2 from the top & showing the undergrowth.

Here is Lifesaver 2

and here is Bogglegum 4

That's up to date on progress!

Those are some really healthy looking plants Ambre. They are beautiful !!! Mine have been growing in dirt under T-5's and not looking as healthy I don't think I have the fertilizer program down yet. I'm tempted to go back to Peter's or Miracle grow for the dirt and leave the other fert's I bought for hydro.
