Where'd the bubblegum go?

After posting on OG I'm in the habit of apologizing for being a first-time ignoramous, so, I apologize. Usually on OG my posts drop like a rock so I hope I can get some help here. My question involves bud aroma as it dries. Since I just finished my first grow with an actual female plant in it, I have no experience to refer to. My question is this. Just before I chopped my Bubblegum girl (THSeeds) it smelled very sweet and bubblegummy. After being chopped and hung it smelled skunky and dank. Today is day 5 of hanging in my grow cab (C13). Completely dark, temp. 65, humidity 20% with the fan on low. The branches bend and kink but don't snap yet. Now the smell is hard to describe, but bubblegum it is not. I would describe it more as green decomposition, a little like old grass clippings or hay. Is this normal or have I screwed this up? Is it possible to get the sweet bubblegum smell back after the buds dry completely and cure?

After it dries, cure it in some mason jars. It will come back after a nice cure. They say the longer the better. I try to let my stuff cure for at least 3 1/2 weeks before I really smoke on it.

So just a regular jar works for you? I thought it had to be pressure tight. like mason,
or Kerrs jars, locking etc.... Im confused, So any jar will work? Cool nice thread learn something everyday.. peace IC'ers

I appreciate all of your responses. I'll be patient and wait the cure out. I checked again this morning and the branches still bend and kink, so I think I have a few days yet before they go into the jars.

Hey ! u didn't screw up przcvctm u need to Decarboxylate the medicine:"rid it of chlorophyll" , I prefer widemouth BALL jars with rubber seals are good for huge colas if u don't want to cut it into small buds, available at your local wal-mart give the cure a 4 weeker at least open jar once a day to air it out check for mold. then voila :joint: tasty & smells wonderful! goo' luck

One last question on the subject while I'm at it. In letting the plant hang and dry until the branches are dry enough to "snap", does that mean dry enough to snap in two pieces or make a snap when you bend it? Thanks again all for your advice.

I do the snapping sound and never miss airing the jars on a daily basis. I do it a couple times a day actually until the bud stops "sweating" - Even after that open them up every so often cause even if you think it is totally dry hidden moisture can creep up and get moldy. And THAT is total bummer.

great advice everyone

great advice everyone

hey przcvctm...

The advice here is great... I have made the misake a few times of leaving the jars open a few times, smoked a bowl, went to sleep, and closed them back up in the morning. My buds got really dry and while they didnt get mouldy, they did become extremely harsh to smoke and lost much of their sweet candy taste. Ya gotta try to get that equilibrium between letting the jars "burp" and not letting them get overexposed to too much oxygen.

BTW, does anyone know of an affordable/practical way to vacumm seal mason jars?? Just imagining opening my jars after a few weeks and hearing that "pssssssst" sound and taking in the aromas.....oh my.... really want to do this if possible.... :canabis:

A seal a meal works well but the way jars are sealed is by heating then cooling which you cant do with pot in there. BOG

Hey thanx BOG!!!

I actually "googled" "seal a meal" and found this product for less $$$ and will be trying it out soon.

I remember seeing these on TV a few years back. It supposedly seals any jar. Just type "Pump N Seal" into Google and you'll find plenty for under $20 (US).

Hope this also helps anyone that was looking to vacuum seal their jars, but couldn't find an economical way to do it.

I misunderstood and thought that the stems and branches were supposed to be so dry that they snapped in two. All the while I'm bending and kinking thinking I need to wait longer, the bud was in a state of dessication. Bone-dry and crunchy. I cut them up and bottled them last night. I opened them this morning and their just as dry, nothing close to sweating. Suggestions?

It's only been 6 days in the jar and the first hint of bubblegum is begining to return. Amazing. I noticed that each day I opened the jars that there was a little less green decay smell and a little more sweetness. Can't wait for the 4 week mark. Thanks all for helping me. The first time for anything is difficult but now I'm richer in having been there and now knowing.

An update for anybody completeing a grow for the first time. The bubblegum never went anywhere, it was just masked by other, stronger odors of the drying and curing process. First there was the afore mentioned decaying wet hay smell. That was followed by a strong sour-skunky kind of smell. Next came a sort of sickening-sweet perfume, that kind that old women wear too much of. Now at week three in the jar the more subtle, sweet smell of flowering is returning. It's good to have the first one under my belt. Thanks for all the reassurance and help.

u could try either leaving the buds over night in a some what humid room, go to your locla head shop and get a humidity puck, or throw in a couple orange peels, tho this will give it an orange smell and sometimes taste. I prefer super dry well cured buds tho, makes it much easier to remove the tric during seiving.
