1gpw isn't a myth. Heath Robinson yielded 1.79 gpw (1075g dry off 1x 600w) in one of his vertical hydro grows. Granted he used 70 plants I think. Very F'ing inspirational considering the size of that grow ("mini vertical")

With enough plants, good genes, and efficient use of light, I don't see why such a yield wouldn't be possible. After you're dialed in, the game becomes how to make use of every photon of light your lamp is giving off.

This means you focus more on the design of your garden in terms of how to maximize light for each plant. Plants should NOT shade each other. They shouldn't touch each other. There should be no shaded areas in the individual plants. If so, either LST/scrog/supercrop or have shorter plants so your light can penetrate to the bottom, or lollipop/defoliate or consider going with SoG, or better yet a vertical SoG.
