That root porn makes me very happy. I have to believe that having 10" wide root ball is better than an 8" for your set up.

I just put up some root porn today myself! I was thinking to myself "we never get root porn in the vert forum..." Great job! Keep it up.

Yes, agreed, thanks again for that one, I'm never going smaller than 10" pots again...

Ganja_hasi, Somehow I knew you wouldn't miss a root post! Thanks for taking the time to keep up with my thread:)

Thanks to everyone else for following along with positive vibes and encouragement, This is the prize for sharing...

A few things I have learned so far with vert growing:

(1) The wind tunnel through the canopy is paramount for vert grows in tight spaces. This is accomplished by the floor fan and placement of the exhaust.

I am going to upgrade the floor fan to an ever larger more powerful one, it could do nothing but good!! I believe the floor fan should be an overkill aspect to the grow, bigger is better. This also keeps strong air circulation under the canopy where it's needed.

(2) The diameter of the plants around the bulbs determines yield, dialing the room is gonna take knowing your lights and strains but generally bigger is better.

I started with 30" for the 600w but found out the 400w is kickin ass in that diameter (no doubt with a little help from the 600) but I wish I started at 36". Next round, I am moving the buckets against the walls to see what happens.

(3) Trimming and training the plants is something that just has to be learned and will really take the bud quality/yield to max levels once mastered.

(4) Nothing to do with vert but DWC can really produce even without a chiller and big pumps.

(5) Gallon buckets with 10" pots kick ass!!!

Hey Aero! This is kind of off-topic but I'm wondering why you went with the black airline instead of the normal clear stuff, is it just what you already laying around? Or is there a method to your madness? =) Stay safe!

Hey Hippydan, The clear airline can cause light leaks into the buckets, they get green with algae... Use the black if you have a choice. I get the black at Petco....

Check out the Dig brand at Home Depot, I like it because it is a bit softer than some brands and easier to work with.

Looking sexy, stretch is done. What are your observations as far as height of the plant pre and post stretch is concerned?

I think 50% stretch is optimal for my strain however I'm still trying to dial things in.

Hydrosun,

Stretch was disappointing, especially with the Critical Mass. The CM's only stretched 6" or 10% at most. This strain is not ideal for vert bushes, but if you took it to the tree level, that might change. I think CM is hard to beat for a flat garden but not ideal for vert.

The Romberry stretched the best, maybe 30% followed by the GDP around 25%, still not as much as expected. I was going for trees and got bushes...lol

Some of this is my noobness regarding vert. First of all, I should not have topped them in veg, second, I will use the top light for veg rather than the bottom light. This might have given better results.

It's going to be a close battle between the RB and the GDP for the best strain to monocrop next round. The GDP looks like it will finish sooner so far and it has the dense structure of the CM with the height/stretch fo the RB...

Overall, this has been awesome fun and the pictures just can't do it justice, every time I open the doors to the room, whoa! speachless.
I can't wait to start the next round with what I have learned from this grow.

That is so cool and such a great feeling. I can remember the first time I ran 5gal buckets it was like being a kid every day and having recess in my garden.

As for strain choice I think you will be well served by taking good notes on this grow, and having 6 - 8 of each strain in clone ready to go. When the results are in you can pick your next group of ladies without missing a beat.

On the subject of getting them taller, I think you are correct that using the top light only and raising it will help you get them taller. Perhaps wait on adding the lower light until 7 days into flower? Just a thought because my ladies stretch for 14 days or so.

The main reason I am bummed about the stretch is that I got less height and more density than expected. This means I would have been better off with a 1k bulb and ballast to penetrate the dense canopy. I originally intended to have a little less density and more height which would have made the 600w + 400w work better.

Next time, I should be able to use both bulbs to my advantage with 5 foot plants....

I'm speechless from the pics but can manage typing, lol.:D Looking forward to your next run as well. I doubt I'll every go 1k but your 600/400 idea gives me ideas for a smaller version of your rig. Thanks for documenting everything.

You are 100% correct here, for some strains. But maybe two bulbs on digi-dial a watt would be tits?

I even think the 600w x 2 ballasts can be great in a doughnut setup.

The lack of stretch you see as a problem many with lower ceilings may see as paradise?

Personally overkill would be my answer with 2 1k bulbs on dial a watt digis. That way you can have what ever setting you want for top and bottom bulb.

Yes, 2 X 1k's with dial a watt would be the best way to dial this room but I don't think 1k is needed for 6X6 vert. I should use the 8.5' height and run 3X 600 like Bobble is doing. If I could get the stretch just right 3X600w would be ideal for 6-7 foot plants but I would probably have to go sativa dom to make this work. I really wish i had 8X8 then 2 X 1k would be a no brainer...

That said, I won't be using 3 lights next round, I plan to go with 1k over 600w with the ability to dial the wattage to the results of the stretch... I also plan to put the buckets against the walls and add 1 or 2 buckets, So 7 or 8 plants around 1200-1600 watts to dial the room in for max yield.

Well just take some notes and decide but the buckets seem to be good for trees so 10sq'+ per lady is my rule of thumb. Your roots look like they want to support huge trees and those need space.

Hey DB, I would like to see a 250w over a 150w vert micro. I bet with the right strain a pound could be pulled in a very small space. Talk about the holy grail for personal supply under the radar, this would be tough to beat....

Hey Aero! I was thinking about how I could do something like this in my DR60 2x2x5 grow tent. But I'm currently using a rubbermaid tub, DWC style. Think it would still be possible? I don't have space like you do in between your buckets. And If I mounted something to or above the DWC tub, it would be tricky for me to do res changeouts etc. Just bouncing ideas around, eventually I may do something other than the rubbermaid, I just don't have much space in my 2x2 footprint.
