We're still hardwired for social contact, just as we were when we were cave dwellers and agrarians. The need was diminished with the industrial revolution, but the 'group identity' remained the same, more or less (just look at partisan group think, inter-family feuds, nationalism, sports team fans, etc.).
But anyone who has ever witnessed the goings-on in divorce court or family court knows that those who are closest to us, the most trusted in our inner circles, are often the folks who will break our heart or skewer us the most. Sometimes simply because they are the people we're most vulnerable to, but also because they are the folks who know our darkest secrets, or can identify the Achilles tendon we all tend to carry around, etc.
Our loved ones know the chinks in our armor, and we tend to take greater advantage of our loved ones, too.
Love's a 'need', but it can often surprisingly become convoluted or even absent in expression in what are supposed to be our most tender relationships.
