Seedling Issues

I've got a Kali Mist seedling that is about 1 week from sprout (give or take) that is having some problems. It was started in straight FFOF and was under 400w HID light until yesterday when I did some transplanting, ran out of space and moved it pretty close to a 6500k 4 lamp T5. The seedling looked great until today when the leaves started to curl-fold together (see pick) and some crispy patches developed on the first two true leaves. I thought it looked like Mg deficiency so I hit it up with some CalMag which only made the symptoms worse (5 hrs later). I subsequently flushed and foiler sprayed with some seaweed extract and moved a couple feet away from the light.

I'm really not sure whats going on here but the plant doesn't look right. I have a couple more seedlings (SSH) that were started at the same time that look pretty good.

Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

The straight FFOF is a bit waayyyy too hot for starting seedlings in.

Being a very small seedling I'd transplant it into a seed starter soil or soil less medium like sunshine mix.
Leeching that ffof will do very little to relieve the seedling of its overferted response.

trust me i made the same mistake..I killed some real prized plants this year..and i am seasoned(i thought) grower...I vow never to feed plant until it has established itself..My dad said it best..."do you give a burger to a baby"...I will never forget that...good advice...I killed 2 Chem Dog's and 3 Bangi haze crosses this week by feeding the plants TOO EARLY...
I tried to leech to no avail...oh well I learned my lesson...at least I didn't kill all my plants...

This is fine but I've done it 100 or so times and it always works out great - and I don't have to feed until after the first transplant 3-4 weeks or so.

Even the SSHs I started at the same time are looking very good

My bubba's did that and the problem was a combo of too high heat and too low humidity! Might be the same cuz only the pre98 bub did that not chem d. Kalimist is a hybrid and SSH is almost pure sativa right? The SSH probably has a higher Temp tolerance than kalimist which has a little more indica in there, but not much. Smokin Kali mist right now, I like it, not legendary, but very good and pretty good yield from what I hear. Hope that helps.

Some babies are the rough and tumble high strung types and can struggle their way thru it given enough high intensity lighting etc if they're robust enough to take it. But most babies need tender loving care until they're strong enough to handle the world and all it throws at it. And some bags of soil aren't as hot as the majority of ffof bags.

Like chefboys dads analogy...gotta learn to chew before ya bite the burger

Thanks for the suggestions.

I pulled the plant out of the pot intending to take some soil out of the rootball and transplant it back into some of the fresh FFOF I just opened, but it was impossible to take away soil from the rootball without damaging the roots. I ended up just taking soil off the top and putting some fresh FFOF on the bottom and sides, sort of like an elevated double potting. I hope it works.

ahhhh...it won't if you're just going to slam it back into more ffof.
The ffof IS the culprit you need to transplant the sprout away from and into a milder mix.

I think heat and low humidity were the culprit. The plant was very close to the T5 which is probably hotter than I thought (I haven't used these before). Of course I probably didn't do the plant any favors with the Cal Mag and putting it back underneath the light.

It is doing much better after the foiler feeding, moving it away from the light, and transplanting. I'll post a picture later.

FFOF has always worked straight from rapid rooters to soil with no perlite added. i feed them with around 1000 ppms of food the first week and they blow up. I have not ever gotten a hot bag of FFOF and i have bought over a hundred bags of it last year.

They'll do better starting life germed in the rapid rooter, transitioning into the ffof.
but I call bullshit on the 1000ppm the first week claim !
