What's new

my micro cloning factory...PL-L's and Walmart cloners doing the job!

...when i first started using these cloners i used to
tug on the cuts to check if they were rooted and,
when they were rooted i'd pull them out by their
stems.

it didn't take long to realize that by doing it that
way i was definately damaging some of the roots
so i made myself a custom made ram-rod to push
the rooted clones out from the bottom, just a penny
screwed to a dowel, lol, fits like it was made for the
job.

btw, if you remember earlier in the thread i mentioned
that i use a key in my notebook to keep track of which
cuts are in which cell, here i've checked my key, noted
that the first three were the same so i pushed all three
out at the same time, that way, i don't get confused, lol.

'bout the only thing a penny is good for now days.
Thanks for posting your experience using one of these. I think I might have to go this route. I use a bubbler and get roots in under 10 days, but like yesterday we had a really bad storm come through. There still checking to see if a tornado touched down in the hood. Anyway, electric went out and I had some Mandala clones in my bubbler. Lost power for about 10 hours and they don't look so good now. Mother Nature can be a real bitch at times.

...anyway, here's a few more, note now healthy
the roots are, not just a few little roots but often,
an almost solid plug of roots.

so, this cloner had 24 cuts and only 19 rooted in
the 12 days they were in, plus, another one died
so that's only 18 rooted clones. (75%)

btw, and i don't know why but, the ones that are
struggling and turning yellow are all from my good
friend InPotITrust's outdoor plants, fortunately, i've
managed to get multiple rooted clones from all he
has brought me so, even with less than 100%, we're
doing OK. (he tells me some are over 7 feet tall outdoors)

another point to consider is that, as a micro-grower,
18 rooted clones is more than i can use, my SOG
only requires 5 per week so having more than enough
allows me the luxury of flipping only the most vigorous,
the rest just go to compost.
(some of course will become moms, lol)

yeah, power, no power, these work just fine, in the
event of a power outage just stick them in a window.

hope your cuts pull through.

here's a close up of some roots, without my finger
print to enhance, better safe than sorry, lol.

something i forgot to mention is that i now rinse the
vermiculite from the roots, i found that leaving the
plug of vermiculite didn't give the clones enough of
a grip in the soil.

Is it possible you have a light too close issue....

this batch seems a bit fried to me....

I also feed my clones when they generally begin rooting....

I feed them about day 6.....

Just curious...

high brother and thanks for stopping in and yeah,
that was my conclusion as well.

i actually thought i'd already mentioned it in this
thread but i just went looking and can't find it.

anyway, moving the bulb and maybe using a lower
wattage bulb up top are things i'll need to look at
as moving the shelf is not an option, i mounted it
permanently.

...and feeding, that's something i've not done yet,
maybe some of the yellowing is from them being
hungry, lol.

like i said though, i only actually need 5 clones per
week to feed my SOG so some die off is ok by me,
the extras only get tossed in the bin anyway, lol.

Hey I'm designing a cab and had a question. What are the dimensions of the box you put the cloner in? Thanks

it's 35.5 x 30 x 16 which btw is listed on the box
pictured in the first posting.

...and good luck with your upcoming build, if i can
help in any way, just ask.

I was looking for the dimensions of the shoe box bin that you set the ice tube tray in. Thanks again

sorry man, i misunderstood your question.

it's roughly 14 x 7 inch's, i called it shoebox sized
because it really is almost the same size as an
ordinary shoebox.

hey someotherguy
do you use any nutes or ph water on the outer tube?
and if so how much water you put in there?

Nice job!

I use the same cloner and love it. I've found that the ideal lighting for me is a 9 watt daylight CFL about a foot away. I was originally using a 14 watt and the cuts would root fine, but were a bit fried and took longer to get the new growth going once transplanted. With the 9 watt daylight, there is some yellowing on the bottom, but they otherwise look perfect.

yeah man, if you go back to post #1 you will find a
link to the original cloning thread where i learned
this method. do yourself a favor and make yourself
go back and read that entire thread, it's long so it'll
seem hard but it's well worth it.

btw, if you do that you will find that the original poster
is still active in the thread so can answer your questions
directly.

thanks for the props man and yeah, i had the same
problem so i took the bulb completely out up top so
the only light on the cloners is reflected light from
the bulbs below, they still root just as well just no
more fried tops, lol.

btw, it's nice seeing others using this simple cloning
technique as it is the easiest, cheapest, most reliable
method i've ever found, my bubble cloner has been
gathering dust for more than a year now, lol.

thanks man and when reading the original thread
you can skim most of it but the first several pages
are where you learn the basic technique.

if you DO take the time to read the thread in it's
entirety you will find many doubters and even
more converts, ANYONE can learn to generate
at least 20 healthy clones every 14 days in the
space of a shoe box, in my case i just built a box
to house 4 shoe boxes, lol.

I'll back this statement up as another user of this fine method. Don't think you have to use the ice tray though. Literally any tube about 3" long will work. I use clear plastic tubes so I can see the roots. My entire cloner, res and all is about 2"x8". I honestly get 100% with this method. Early on I lost 2 or 3 but otherwise never.

Love this cab SOG. Nice work!!

high Jed and thanks for your kind words, and i agree
with you that there are a myriad containers that you
could use with great success, Tupperware makes a
tray for popsicles that would work great.

i will say though that with the ice-tubes you can make
a handy ram-rod for pushing out the rooted clones rather
than having to pull them out, just drill a small hole in a penny
and screw it to a piece of dowel, works like it was made
for the job, lol. (which of course it was)

either way, this simple wick-style of cloning has been,
hands down, the easiest and most reliable method i've
ever tried, and i've tried more than a few, lol.

...and thanks again for the props, just another stoner
with an abiding need and a mechanical aptitude, lol.
