Well, an individual should be able to grow a plant for personal consumption. As soon as you call it medicine and want to sell it to people who will use it for their health benefits - the rules change. There has to be a system in place to ensure that people get safe, tested, unaltered and standardized medicine.
As for the ethical dilemma: you say that its wrong to make a living growing medical marijuana for others. Should farmers feel bad for producing food and selling it to make a living? Not everyone can afford to buy bread, should the wheat farmer work for free to feed the masses?
At the moment, when someone shows me their medical marijuana I'm inclined to think that its just as polluted with heavy metal/pesticide residues as the non-medical bud. How many people use Flower Dragon, Phosphoload, etc., without researching the active ingredients?
Bottom line is that to make medicine you need regulations and procedures. To grow pot for yourself, you just need half a brain and a little bit of room.
