Malawi 12/12 from start, what to expect?

Hi everyone

I have 4 malawi seeds and have couple of questions.

First, i have small small growbox 90x90x90cm. How big it will be if i start 12/12 from beginning?

Second, if its going to be too big whats the best method to keep it as small as possible? Recommended pot size? iam planning to use 8liter clay pot. Opinions about scrog or lst? Lights 11/13?

Third, i have only 250w hps. Is that enough for 1 or 2 plants? I hope get one. I dont need huge yeild, just want to try this strain and get as quality bud as possible.

If there anything you like to say/point out, please say.

Thanks

90cm in height is a bit risky with the Malawis and i wouldn´t go for 8liters. Max 5liters imo.
But if you go for it 12/12 since the beginning it´s the way to do it. I´d even reduce the light period to 11hrs when sex is shown and reduce again to 10hrs of light after the 5th week of flowering. This way i´d try to shorten flowering time and stop any residual stretch that may occur during later flower on sativas.
In a 90cm X 90cm one single plant on a scrog would fill it nicely so managing to get four of them in there is not going to be an easy task.
Check the micro-grow section because there are some very experienced growers in there from where you can get some nice pointers when come to grow Sativas in small spaces.
Best of luck for it all.

Well, with due respect, here's hoping it ain't a bastard! Much luck with your grow - she's a wonderful strain in so many ways.

The eternal question, how many plants? :)
Even with experience this issue constantly torments me.
I Want more of strain varieties,i want different smoke also, but i want to have a large and healthy plant-opening potential( i mean sativa strains )
I do not know, right or wrong, but I'm going to try 12/12 (13/11-11/13) in the tent 80-80-160.8-9 plants, Malawi, Panama, Kongo, Jamaica, Zamaldelika.
And I understand that I subscribe to the large and complex adventure.
Better to do 2 or 4 plants, with the classic light-mode 18/6-12/12.
But I want to try everything and once :)
I thought about 6 varieties and hard workout on the vegetation, make clones for my friends, etc. but do classical light modes.18/6>12/12
Does anyone have thoughts on this issue?

Look something like this thicket of 9 different strains 80-80 in a tent
It was 12/12*4wk-18/6*2wk-12/12 till harvest

The difference in the development of very large!
Only after 3 or 4 runs 12/12 from seeds I realized that the structure of the plant, "not the best", used a completely different varieties, some hybrids respond well and sativa strains bad, anyway I did not like it.
I found that the best method to make a classic, and cutting / bending / training your plant to the maximum, because the whole cycle of vegetation you want the roots, not the leaves
2 or 3 weeks of 18/6 its the best start for mostly strains i'v grow.
I'm using MHL ofcourse till 3-4 wk flower, for the best healthy roots systems

But whats about Ace's sativa strains... i don't know, yet :kos:
As Dubi says, only hard tropical sativa needs non standard light cycle like 12/12 from seeds/clones.(thai/haze/zamal etc)

i am growing 5 plants ( destroyer , mextiza , panama , c99bx1 and a sam cross haze/afghani ) in a micro cab , 35 x 35 x 70 cm.( 1 cubic foot of sub and 1 cubic foot for growing )

restricted pot size and heavy lst in veg does the tryck for me, together with sub completely colonized by roots before flip.

Consider as well a vertical setup , blue ligth spectrum until end of stretch , low on N during stretch, etc.

ello mate,
I advise you to make U-scrog when your plants goes to flower
Make 1-2 plants around the lamp, i guess will work good in 90-90
(1-3lts)also you can give them 2-3 weeks of veg 18/6 in small pots and LST them, to form a comfortable structure
btw, seeds fem or reg ?
reg at 12/12 from seeds will take a lot of time to show sex, I think 25-35 days.In the small pots they will stretch very tall.
Some foto from my exp. of 12/12 from seeds.

Thanks for reply.

I have reg seeds.

Usually i use sog style and put plant around the lamp.

Whats the height on picture 3.?

Whats the difference in sexing time if i give them 2weeks veg vs 12/12 from start?

I have my doubts about vegging them.

PunkAssWeed,
Usually, if the plant grows 3-4 week in 18/6, the floor shows a week after transfer 12/12, this is my maximum. Much depends on the strain. Bublegums generally live their lives and show sex at 18/6 :)
I do not have scales, only a camera

I don't remember,it was about 40-50 gr/plant. 5ltr air-pots
on right you can see tallest chupa-chups of Kali Mist sativa ... very bad form i think :(

Ok. So its basically the same time either way.

Asked height,not weight ;p

I thought that picture was malawi.

What light you have? 250 or 400w?

What are the benefits of air-pot? Never heard of them before.

PunkAssWeed,
only amsterdam and US genetics before, but now i wanna try something new for me
i have to many lamps :) 250-600 MHL/HID. in the pics 400mhl/400hid
that's a new dilemma for me. Wanna try MHL all cycle for Ace sativas.more uf-a/b, more like the Sun :canabis:
air-pots working good, but it takes time to get skill on watering :)

Yesterday i've planted some seeds directly into soil-mix.
I'll try to do 15-20 days of vegetation and the traditional transition to 12/12.
I do not know how to be better with REG seeds.
In pots 0.5l I plan to wait for sex determination and then transplant into a 10l. pots
i have 2 nepjam reg / 2 zamaldelica reg / 2 congo fem / 2 malawi fem / 2 panama fem
I hope I will have something to brag at the end of the experiment :canabis:

HI PAW,

Im not sure if you are growing standard or feminized seeds.

If you are growing fem seeds and you are not much into pheno hunting and keeping mothers then i'd recommend you to start one vigorous fem seed, you can easily full up your space (1m2) with one malawi female correctly topped and SCROGed, there are great examples of indoor malawis grows here that may inspire you for the task.

If you are growing standard seeds then i'd grow recommend you to grow the 4 seeds for at least 3 weeks of 18/6 in small pots (1 liter), then switch to 12/12, keep the females in the small pots for the first 3-4 weeks of flowering and finally repot to bigger pots (5-7 liter) to finish the cycle.

Thank you all for your tips and help :)

What is your opinion about the light in indor growing ?
Is MHL with 6100K+ for all cycle better than HID for strains which I wrote above last message ?

Thanks for your reply Dubi

I have reg seeds. I have wondered this and that. At this point plan is go first with smaller pots and later with larger. I have 3 and 5 liter pots already. First with mh horizontal and then hps.maybe switch that same time as repotting. If i need more height then vertical hps.

Im not that picky about pheno, iam pleased what ever i get.

1 liter sounds quite small and needs to water often, sometimes i have to be away for2-3days.if i use 2liter is there going to be huge difference? How well malawi copes with drought?

Do you have recomendation about feeding? Light feeding i presume.

What else, small to larger pot,mh to hps. Oh, other thread from micro grow https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=277553

Your opinion about 12/12 or 13/11 or even 14/10?

Greetings PunkAssWeed,

You can use 2 liter pots to start them too. Malawi likes a lot water and humid weather, usually long droughts are not good for tropical sativas. Use slighty less strong feeding than with modern sativa/indica hybrids.

Good luck!
