also, what do you recommend for lighting the veg room?
diamond mofo- heres some links that could help you with the electrical side of the flip/flop rooms if you insist on DIY. if thats the case, best advice foafster can give is to buy a DIY electrical book from a home improvement store to learn how to be your own electrician, read and reread until you are completely sure of what you are doing, before you try to wire anything.
also if you listen to DHF's advice, foafs opinion is that you will do things right and be happy with the results. foaf has read and highly values many of DHF's posts. if you havent setup yet this is your chance to do things right from the very beginning.
ok heres the threads. you may want to look into subpanels too eventually if you haven't already.

DHF- mad props to you for sharing your knowledge
peace
it looks like it will pass but Im not sure how its going to play out. Seem like anyone who wants to grow in cali right now can already so Im not sure if its going to change a whole lot. I think it will take a year to see the effects
for a 3600w room get a 12in vortex and slap it on a 14in mountain air filter, it will cost you around $800 bucks but its the best you can get, check craigslist for used stuff its overflowing with equipment
The Black Market will always be here......even in Cali.......Quality dictates price.....Top shelf strains done right will always demand top dollar , even if it`s not from the Dispensaries........Gotta network your products and quality sells itself........
Foaf is old head and deserve`s respect........His proof`s in da puddin with 4 lb plants in limited sq ftg.......Nobody`s duplicated his results to this day that I know of........
And for the record comin from Tobacco farmin latitude`s and attitudes where I live.......If Phillip Morris wants the "Bud Biz" when the time comes , there`s not a damn thing John Q Cali can do about it , and I`m a feared it`s headin that way with Richard Lee and Oaksterdam with all his "silent partners/investors"........
Ya`ll are at the forefront of the legislation that`ll rule the world one day bout growin dope so think carefully bout what rights yas give away while takin the easy route of bein ableta do drive thru bud vendors on every corner once legalized for bullshit mids at best IMO once commercialized............
Wanna talk about prices takin a shit ?........Let the Tobacco industry start farmin genetically modified "mids" crops on millions of acres like they do for the production of "Marlboro`s , Newports and Kool`s" .......Instead there`ll be "Mariboro`s" on every corner for bout 40-50 bucks a pack when Marlboro`s after inflated revenue taxes bring the tag for cigarettes to 20 bucks a pack or more...........
It`s only a matter of time before big biz takes over as legalization of some sorts spreads nationwide ,thus cementing my decision that the black market will never go away and quality of product will always dictate price regardless of legal or illegal.........
Be careful whatchas wish for cuz yas might get it........Not a forum I`m a member of that agrees with what`s happenin on the ballot in November ......I`m on the other end of the world , but I`d vote no........

so the low down on timers and lighting controllers is to just get one of those intermatic t104's for every light? isn't there a better way to make use of the amps in a 100amps box or 150 amps box or 200?
the caps light control products seem a bit shaky.
CAP products kinda suck IMVHO, I use the Sentinel light controller myself, its easy to hardwire, then just hook the trigger cable up to a nice Intermatic digital for the timer. The CAP ones with the built in timer are useless once there cheap built in timer craps the bed. Run your lights on 240volts and make use of amps.
player of the year.DHF...MVP?
im confused. in a home the voltage is 120. is there a way to convert that to 240 by attaching some sort of converter?
so it is a timer that plugs into a 24v system? im confused about this device.
You can have 240v circuit breakers in your panel, 240v has two hot wires instead of one like regular 120v. The 240v is a two pole breaker (they look double the size of a regular breaker).
Watts divided by volts=amps
A 1k light (really about 1150 watts) on 120 uses about 9.5 amps
A 1k light on 240 uses about 4.75 amps
Twice the current uses half the amps
Running your lights on 240v circuits makes better use of the power in your panel.
The sentinel controller i use is hardwired to a 30 amp 240v circuit breaker and runs 4k worth of lights. There is an attached 120v trigger cable (just a standard grounded plug) that plugs into any 120v timer.
The simple 120v timer signals all the relays in the box to turn on the power to run all four lights. So with this controller all the lights are on one circuit and being controlled by one timer. The timer doesn't need to be rated for any huge amount of power because its only job is to set off the relays.
Flip-flops are different. They use relays to swich one ballast between two lighting cordsets. The light controller is simply a unit to have a bunch of lights on one circuit, and one timer, it goes like this:
Your main panel>40 amp circuit>Light controller>timer
Hardwire your light controller to its own 30-40 amp circuit
All your ballasts plug into the light controller, then there is a regular grounded cord coming out of the light controller, plug this cord into a timer.
Plug the timer into any regular outlet (this is only to give the timer power to run itself, not to power the lights at all).
In my opinion the ones with the built in timer suck. If the timer craps out and its built into the unit...good luck fixing it.
Ya`ll carry on cuz I don`t do electrical........I alway`s had an electrician run me a 150 amp subpanel off the main breaker box/meter head to my basement setups and fill it up with 15 and 20 amp breakers.........Then they ran 25-30 ft runs of 14/2 and 12/2 w/g romex and put either 2 or 4 outlet boxes with covers on em..........Ran the lights off the 20`s for overkill , and everything else off the 15`s.......Simple....babyshit......The most important 500 bucks I ever spent on my setups....
All I hadta do then was unwire the boxes and run em through/in my walls after being built.........Rewire the boxes and yas got outlets galore with never a worry bout runnin too much shit on 1 circuit and BURNIN YOUR HOUSE DOWN........
Peace.....DHF.........
I didn't think I said it would do anything other than allow more lights per circuit, I never once mentioned billable kilowatt hours, I said you would use half the amps that has nothing to do with your bill.Ok Zenar Bro.......Let`s set some things straight........A 240 volt circuit allows yas ta run more lights per circuit and that`s about it......
