You're in your 60's and suffer from several major health problems. Cannabis is an absolute requirement. You have up to 700K ( but would prefer to spend less ) to spend on a house and both California is interesting because of the liberal laws on cannabis and Hawaii is interesting from the perspective of beauty etc.

How difficult is it to grow top grade, say 30% thc weed outdoors on the Big Island of Hawaii? ( I ask because they don't even have dispensaries there yet? )

I have found a number of doctors that I would like to interview with to see if they'll take my problems on and help me which I was NOT so successful in finding in California unless we were spending even more which ain't gonna happen.

So with this information which place would you pick and why?

Thank you for your help

hawaii is exp but you can live on the land cheap on the big island...high quality medical svs are harder to find than high quality weed...if its pain meds you need forgetaboutit

Where are you looking at in Hawaii and California specifically? I've lived in both places and different things could be said for different areas. I currently live on Maui. I used to live on the Big Island and I lived in Cali for 5 years and my wife's family lives all over the state, from the very north to the very south and all in between. I'm more familiar with central and northern California though. Anyway, right now I'd say many spots in Cali would probably be better for you than the Big Island if you have several health issues. The east side of the B.I. is super wet and prone to lots of mold with the addition of vog (volcanic smog) and the West side has less mold because it's dry, but more vog. Neither vog or mold will be good for your health. We actually had to move back to Maui because the vog made my wife feel like she was dying everyday, no joke, it was miserable. She's fairly sensitive to chemicals though. And the cheapest areas on the B.I. are cheap for a reason; it's REALLY wet and the crime rate is pretty high. It has some benefits too, like pretty much being able to do whatever you want because there's little enforcement of any kind, which is also a negative because not everybody has good intentions.

Also, if you need anything major medical-wise, e.g., surgery, you'll probably have to go to Oahu for it.

The best place for you on the B.I. is probably up by Hawi, but it's not that cheap. Overall I like the B.I., but it definitely has its drawbacks too.

There's plenty of nice and crappie areas in Cali too so stating some thoughts on specific areas would be helpful.

I would be hesitant to purchase land in hopes of retiring based on the landscape of the law in those areas because it is still being shaped.

CO land prices went up and appreciated quickly so if you go out west you might find the same situation where you can do the same, might be best to find a place that looks good, rent in the area you like, get a feel for things before you settle down for the long term.

Good Luck

health wise so cal has awesome medical..ucsd medical rocks with cutting edge specialists and stuff you would have a hard time finding elsewhere...san diego....Hawaii has better fishing....so cal getting a rec is simple and the mj laws are lax as can be...yeehaw...expect to pay highest gas and electric/water rates tho....yeehaw..my friend from big bear moved to Hawaii he was a decent size grower...he came back within a year...

With a $700k budget...

With a $700k budget...

You could buy a nice place in Topanga Canyon, where I live. it's where all of the old hippies live.

Great medical facilities all around, getting a rec should not be a problem.

15 minutes to the beach, great surfing.

Good Luck

BC, if you can.

We have far less "brahs" than either of those places and not-financially crippling health care.

i must agree with weird, Cali is drifting in the direction Washington took with cannabis legislation. better to wait and see where it lands.
i was stoked to move to Washington, then legalization happened and destroyed dreams (they actually created new criminals), now i want to drift back to Colorado.

eastern Oregon beckons.

save some money there too.

Argentina all the way!

Weather is nice, cost of life is cheap. Regulation about weed is cozy, and spanish is easy to learn!

Personally i really think about moving there for long.

I would go to Oregon. A smaller city, towards the coast for cool overcast and more inland for heat and sun. Southern California is not a garden spot anymore.

Regardless of your ailments, you'll be fine legally in CA, especially if you just hope to grow a small homegrown garden. Most liberal counties don't even blink at the thought, and with your paperwork your legal regardless.

You could get quite an amazing property with acreage for 700k on the Big Island.

Getting your medical card is not a problem here and having prior medical documentation should make it a guarantee.

We will have dispensaries next year but only one license per county and they can operate two retail locations (a monopoly basically). Its not difficult to grow outdoors year round here and there's a wide variety of microclimates to pick from, especially with your kind of budget. I'd be looking at the west side of any island for tons of intense sunshine and minimal rain, though there are many of us who make it work on the wet sides of the island.

you'd be crazy not to choose HI with that budget.
zillow these

13-726 Kamaili Rd,
Pahoa, HI 96778
ocean view 25 acres $239K shitty house

14-684 A Rd,
Pahoa, HI 96778

11-2735 Waimaka O Pele Rd,
Mountain View, HI 96771

12-1217 Kaimu Makena Hmstd Rd,
Pahoa, HI 96778

000 Upper Puna Rd,
Pahoa, HI 96778

13-1039 Kamaili Rd,
Pahoa, HI 96778

19-4309 Wright Rd,
Volcano, HI 96785

For sure there are a lot of great deals on the B.I. Out of the list the Chunkypigs posted, I'd pick a Pahoa property. The air is the cleanest down there and it's not as rainy as upper Puna, but it's still pretty freaking wet. And if you have any respiratory problems, like I said, I would avoid the B.I. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed living there, but between rain, mold and vog it's not worth it if you're not in good health to begin with.

I don't know why I didn't think of it, but with 700K you could afford something nice on Maui and IMHO I think it would be a good option for you. It's pricier, but there's lots of nice areas, tons of great beaches, a ridiculous amount of good looking women in summer/beach clothing (this may not be a positive note for your other half though, ha ha), low crime rates in most areas, great weather and with few exceptions, no vog. Even when we have Kona winds the vog isn't as potent as it is on the B.I. The vog has a decent amount of time to drop a lot of the heavy metals on its way over to Maui. My wife doesn't get sick here like she did on the B.I. She felt worse on a clear day in upper Puna than she does on a "voggy" day here.

And I'd pick Maui over California. If I didn't I wouldn't have moved back to Maui from Cali, ha ha, even though I think Cali is great for a lot of reasons.... well some parts of Cali at least. There's a few area in Cali that I'd pick North Dakota over and I have no desire whatsoever to live in N. Dakota. I can't say the same thing about Maui ;)

And I'm not old enough to have to know, but I've read it's easy for seniors to get good medical coverage from the state here. The state caters to seniors in a lot of ways, though maybe not as well as Cali, I don't know.

Something else to note is interstate traveling is easier in Cali (obviously). For some reason a lot of people get "island fever" and can't handle being at least semi-stuck in the most remote population center in the world (even though most of the time mainlanders don't travel very far anyway).

Topanga is really nice. Looked at seven properties for sale, but ultimately chose to a place in Santa Barbara.
