redb_vett_budd_2011-31.jpg

Sebastian Vettel claimed his 13th pole position of the 2011 season, tieing a record held by both Prost(driving a Williams- 1993) and Senna(driving a Mclaren-1988) for most pole's in a season. This gives Red Bull its 16th Pole Position of the year as a team, breaking the record held by Mclaren from the 1988 season when they had both Prost and Senna driving.

Vettel leads the field on the first lap

Sebastian Vettel utterly crushed his competitor's today by winning the inagural Grand Prix of India. Not only did he lead every lap of the race, he also set fastest lap on lap 60, the final lap of the race. With this win, he breaks the record held by Nigel Mansell (1992-Williams) for the most lead laps in a single season. Moreover, Vettel scored his first Grand Slam of his career today. What gentle reader, might you ask is a Grand Slam in F1 racing....??

It's when a driver wins pole position, wins the race & sets fastest lap . In so doing, Vettel breaks Ayrton Senna's record to became the youngest F1 driver to accomplish this, all at the tender age of 24.

Button finished second, with Alonso taking the last podium postiton placing third .

 ALERT :

On lap 24, F1's two biggest meat head antongonist's tangled once again. That's right, Hamilton and Massa butted head's for the umpteenth time this year (I can recall six individual incident's where they tried to take each other out). Massa was in front, Hamilton was trying to pass. Massa clearly saw Hamilton in his mirror's, but was still half a car length ahead when Hamilton pulled up next to him to pass. Massa didn't give him any room, and Hamilton's right front wheel touched Massa's left rear, and they both took each other out. Both were able to continue on, but as a result of banging wheel's against each other, they both had to pit for new front wings. I call this terminal Shit for Brains Syndrome, or , S for B.

Massa & Hamilton continue their on track "Bromance" . As Forrest Gump once said, "stupid is as stupid does...."
12523.jpg

The incident was investigated by the race stewards (Johnny Herbert was the guest driver steward), and they decided to give Massa a drive-thru pit lane penalty. I was stunned by that decision. WTF...????? What TV screen were the race steward's watching...?? They must have been smoking a particularly potent strain of Indian Hindu Kush in their cushy (no pun intended) FIA private office that made them all stoned stupid, becaue IMHO, they got it ALL wrong. At the very least, both driver's should have been penalized. If it were up to me, I would ban/suspend both driver's for a race, and fine them each big time. I don't give a flying fuck to get into who had the racing line, who should have lifted, bla, bla, bla. These two knuckle head's are going to to eventually cause a horrific accident if this fued is allowed to fester. If this sort of bush league antic's were happening in a racing series such as Nascar, it would have been dealt with swiftly a long time ago. The FIA, being the wanker's that they are, have done sweet fuck all. IMHO, this is pathetic .They've been extremely fortunate so far to walk away unscathed. Sooner or later, the odd's are going to catch up with them. All this is especially ironic since before the race a moment of silence was taken to honor the death's of Dan Wheldon and Morco Simoncelli. Apparently Massa and Hamilton were standing next to each other during this ceromony on the grid, and Hamilton put his arm around Massa and wished him a good race. Once again, I ask, WTF...????? It's high time the FIA stepped in and sat these two Billionaire Boy's Club member's down for a little face to face / heart to heart pow wow before it's too late.

Episode 43 :

Indian GP Debrief with ScarbsF1, Narain Karthikeyan & Alice Powell
The Airtel Indian GP was more than just another "new frontier" F1 race: this was a game-changer. The Indians embraced F1; they loved F1 - and the potential, now, is huge. Part of the success story is due to the genesis of the Buddh Circuit, which is privately developed and owned by the sports-crazy JP Group. And part of it is due to the strength and passion of a handful of motor sport-loving Indians - the Chandhoks, Dr Vijay Mallya... and Narain Karthikeyan, who last Sunday became the first Indian ever to race in his national GP. He maximised his opportunity, too, matching his nearest competition for speed and finishing 17th, despite a lack of recent race and test mileage. And so now the fuse has been lit. 1.3bn Indians and a thriving economy are poised to adopt F1 as a part of the national culture. Can F1 deliver with follow-up promotion and media penetration? We are hoping to talk to Narain live in India about this and about his week, his race - and the future in general for Indian motor sport. Also joining us - fresh from her two podium finishes on the Buddh Circuit in the MRF Challenge race - will be 18-year-old Alice Powell, the uber-talented English girl who has been a front-runner in UK Formula Renault in 2011. How did she like India? How was she received? And what are her hopes and plans for the future? And as if all that is not enough, the hugely popular - and graphic - Craig Scarborough will also be making a welcome return to The Flying Lap studio to help us analyse the latest F1 developments.

F1 Commission agrees to team name changes - ESPN

http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/63364.html

Formula One's key stakeholders have agreed to requests from three teams to change their chassis names next season, bringing an end to a year-long row over the use of the Lotus name in F1.

According to reports, Team Lotus' cars will be known as Caterhams next season, Renault's cars will be called Lotuses and the Virgins will be renamed Marussias, after fellow F1 teams and other members of the F1 Commission agreed to the name changes at a meeting in Geneva.

While the origins of the Virgin name change are relatively straightforward (the team wanting to promote key investors Marussia over Richard Branson's Virgin brand), the row over the Lotus name has been dragging on since the end of last season.

After a bitter court battle, Team Lotus eventually maintained the right to use its historic name in Formula One, while car manufacturer Group Lotus, which was trying to prevent Team Lotus using the name, was also allowed to continue its sponsorship of Renault. However, Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes has now decided to drop the name in favour of his recently-acquired Caterham car brand, thus ending the confusion of having two teams using the Lotus name on the F1 grid.

The name changes are expected to be ratified and confirmed at a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council on December 7.

5 Years , over 35 accident's : Has Hamilton Been Treated Fairly ?
Debates
3rd November 2011 11:14 am by Keith Collantine 197 Comments »
Lewis Hamilton has been no stranger to controversy in his first five years in Formula 1.

This has led to claims and counter-claims over whether the FIA stewards treat the McLaren driver too harshly.

With that in mind I’ve compiled data on Hamilton’s many visits to the stewards on a range of minor and major charges, whether he was the innocent or aggrieved party. Do they reveal anything about Hamilton’s form before the stewards?

2007
Race Incident Outcome Notes
Hungary Alonso blocks Hamilton in the pits during qualifying Five-place grid penalty for Alonso, team lose constructors’ points for race Hamilton, who inherited pole position, had ignored a team instruction to let Alonso start his lap first.
Japan Kubica collides with Hamilton Kubica given a drive-through penalty
Japan Collision between Vettel and Webber behind Hamilton during safety car period No action taken on Hamilton. Vettel initially given ten-place penalty, later reduced to a reprimand. Only investigated after evidence emerged in video shot by fan
Brazil Hamilton, Button and Sato use an extra set of wet tyres in practice All teams have to return extra set and pay €15,000 fines Occurred in practice for championship-deciding race

Hamilton had few visits to the stewards in his first season
Hamilton’s first season saw some contentious decisions which gave a foretaste of what was to come.

There were no consequences for Hamilton at the Nurburgring when marshals used a crane to place his car back on the track – Hamilton still inside – after he spun off in a rain storm. The rules were later changed to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Hamilton was judged blameless when Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel collided behind him during a safety car period in Japan. But, following a second investigation after a new video of the incident, emerged a penalty initially given to Vettel was reduced.

At the season finale Ferrari alleged Hamilton had caused Kimi Räikkönen to lose time in qualifying, but they did not appeal and the stewards did not investigate the incident.

Hamilton lost the championship to Raikkonen in the race. Afterwards the cars of Williams and BMW faced a protest over using fuel of an incorrect temperature. Had they been thrown out and points redistributed, Hamilton might have won the championship, but no such action was taken.

Hamilton was not directly implicated in the ‘spygate’ affair which saw McLaren thrown out of the constructors’ championship and fined $100m.

2008
Race Incident Outcome Notes
Malaysia Hamilton and Kovalainen impede Heidfeld and Alonso in qualifying Five-place grid drop for Hamilton and Kovalainen
Europe Hamilton arrives late for FIA press conference €5,000 fine
Canada Hamilton crashes into Raikkonen in the pit lane Ten-place grid drop for next race Rosberg received same penalty for same infringement
France Hamilton cuts a chicane while overtaking Vettel Drive-through penalty for Hamilton
Belgium Hamilton overtakes Raikkonen at the corner after he had gone off the track and allowed Raikkonen past Post-race time penalty, which cost him his victory McLaren’s appeal rejected as “inadmissible”
Japan Raikkonen goes off the track as Hamilton runs wide in turn one Drive-through penalty for Hamilton
Japan Hamilton hit by Massa Drive-through penalty for Massa

Raikkonen and Hamilton had several incidents in 2008
Many of the penalties Hamilton received in his second season were straightforward and uncontroversial: impeding in Malaysia, taking out Raikkonen in Canada, cutting a corner in France.

However the stewards’ decision to strip him of his victory in Belgium was an absolute travesty.

Hamilton was forced off the track by Raikkonen while battling the Ferrari driver for the lead. Hamilton returned to the track, gave the lead back to Raikkonen, then overtook him at the next corner.

In judging this an illegal move and handing Hamilton a 25-second penalty, the stewards contradicted recent precedent. They handed the win not to the driver Hamilton had allegedly transgressed against, but his team mate, who was never in the hunt for victory.

Hamilton had another penalty for a strange incident with Raikkonen in Japan, where the McLaren driver braked too late for the first corner and ran wide, along with several other cars.

Italy Hamilton exceeds the pit lane speed limit in practice €2,400 fine
Italy Buemi runs down an escape road to avoid Hamilton during Q1 No action taken Buemi was eliminated in Q1 but Hamilton probably made no difference to this

McLaren were caught red-handed in Melbourne
Few edicts from the stewards’ office had much consequence for Hamilton in 2009 – with one significant exception.

During a safety car period in the first race of the season Hamilton moved ahead of Jarno Trulli when the Toyota driver went off the track. Under instruction from his team, Hamilton then allowed Trulli to re-pass him, still behind the safety car.

But McLaren gave a different version of events to the stewards, who initially punished Trulli. When the truth emerged Trulli was reinstated and Hamilton disqualified.

Singapore Hamilton and Webber collide No action taken Hamilton retired due to damage
Abu Dhabi Hamilton crosses the white line at the pit lane entry during practice Hamilton given a reprimand

Webber and Hamilton collide in Singapore
Hamilton was perhaps fortunate to avoid a more severe penalty for overtaking the safety car in Valencia. He had been disqualified for doing the same thing in a GP2 race at Imola in 2006.

He collected a series of reprimands during the year for both driving and other infringements.

One of which was the team’s instruction for him to stop the car after qualifying in Canada as he was low on fuel. He kept his pole position, and it’s doubtful his low fuel level was what secured it for him.

Race Incident Outcome Notes
Malaysia Hamilton changes line more than once defending from Alonso Hamilton given post-race time penalty Similar to what he had been warned about the year before.
Malaysia Alonso hits Hamilton while racing for position Alonso given post-race time penalty

Hamilton received two penalties in the Monaco Grand Prix
The previous year, Hamilton had been warned by the stewards for changing his line more than once while defending his position at Sepang. Unsurprisingly, they escalated his penalty to a drive-through when he repeated the move on Alonso 12 months later.

Hamilton’s penalty for spinning his car in front of Paul di Resta during the Hungarian Grand Prix attracted much comment. Adrian Sutil received a reprimand and $20,000 fine for spinning into the side of Nick Heidfeld in Singapore two years earlier in similar circumstances – a penalty that looks too lenient on Sutil in retrospect.

His collision with Pastor Maldonado in the Monaco Grand Prix might have been avoided had Maldonado shown the kind of awareness Michael Schumacher had when Hamilton made an identical move on the Mercedes driver earlier in the race.

Had Maldonado survived the incident I suspect Hamilton would not have been penalised, as it often seems the stewards place too much weight on the consequences of an incident, rather than whether a drivers’ move was acceptable or not in the first place.

But on the whole Hamilton’s penalties this year have been entirely typical of what would be expected.

Conclusions
You can make a lot of criticisms about the FIA stewards: They are not always consistent. They too rarely give explanations for their more contentious decision.

They use penalties which can vary enormously in effect with the circumstances and produce outcomes that are excessively severe (Spa 2008) or unduly lenient (Valencia 2010).

This goes for all drivers including Lewis Hamilton. Consistent application of the rules is a bugbear for fans of many sports and F1 is no exception.

But the evidence above does not support claims that the stewards pursue a line for or against Hamilton.

And, though he may imply otherwise in the heat of the moment, nor do I think Hamilton believes he gets unfair treatment from them.

In 2007, Hamilton voiced his displeasure at the handling of the Fuji safety car incident, saying: “I just think it’s a real shame for the sport.

“Formula 1′s supposed to be about hard, fair competition. That’s what I’ve tried to do this year, just be fair. There’s been some real strange situations this year where I’m made to look the bad person and, by the looks of it, this weekend be given a penalty. If this is the way it’s going to keep going it’s not somewhere I really want to be.”

Four years and some 30-odd incidents later, if Hamilton seriously thought the stewards had it in for him surely he’d be long gone already.

Do you think the stewards have treated Hamilton fairly or unfairly? Which decisions do you agree or disagree with? Have your say in the comments.

If you believe I have overlooked any significant incidents involving Hamilton please supply details in the comments, including a reference to the relevant stewards’ report if possible.

Hammy to me has not done anything that has not been done by others in the past. But he will never get another Championship until he learns how to pick his battles and save the DAMN CAR. Considering who he sleeps with I'd think he would be a little more subdued but he is in a second rate car and I think it bugs him but to give up a second a lap would piss me the hell off as well hehe.

For whatever reason the masses love conflict and controversy real racers like ourselves like good racing and to me F1 this year has been the premier series to watch.

Is he dirty?

That's a tough call considering they have all been guilty at one time or the other.

Does he do stupid stuff?

Oh yes several times and would have a few more big trophy's if he would just like I said learn to pick his fights.

Vettel to me is the class of the field and will be for some time. He is by far one of the best my old arse has ever seen behind the wheel of a car. He's made maybe 4 mistakes all year and that's how ya win big trophy's and to be so young but yet so subdued and so damn smooth is amazing.

To me Hammy is like the guy in school that wanted to be a bully but never was big enough to be one. he tried mind you but more times then not he got his ass kicked :)
No one is afraid of him like they were say Senna. They all knew Senna would do whatever was necessary to get his point across that he was the Big Man On Campus where as Hammy can fight yes but doesn't have the mentality to be a True Bully like those from the past.

Bernie Ecclestone is sworn in as a witness at the Gerhard Gribkowski trial
12579.jpg

ESPNF1 : http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/63745.html

Ecclestone admits paying off banker :

Bernie Ecclestone told a German court he stood to lose "in excess of £2 billion" if he was found to be misusing the tax-free family trust he set up for his ex-wife and daughters.

Speaking on his first day of evidence during the prosecution for corruption and tax evasion of banker Gerhard Gribkowsky by the German authorities, Ecclestone told the Munich court that payments of around $44 million were not bribes but were made to prevent Gribkowsky making vindictive claims to HM Revenue & Customs.

"Basically he [Gribkowsky] wanted some money to set up in business and my fear was, maybe he would do something, and I could keep him quiet and peaceful and friendly and not do silly things," Ecclestone admitted.

He said the risk was that if HM Revenue & Customs demanded tax on a trust he had set up to protect his wife's inheritance from UK tax he would lose more than £2 billion.

"I didn't know how they could have proved anything," he continued. "The fear was that they could have assessed me and it would have taken an awful long time of my life when I was completely in the right. Revenue would have assessed me as if I was controlling the trust and I would have had the burden to prove I was not involved."

Asked if Gribkowsky had made any direct threats, Ecclestone said he had not, but he explained: "It was like in those gangster films where they say 'I've seen your children go to school. I've seen them leave every day at 9.00am' and you know, unless you're really stupid, that they are serious. I thought maybe I could keep him [Gribkowsky] quiet by paying; stop him doing silly things."

Ecclestone paid about $23 million to Gribkowsky and the trust around $21 million.

He will face another day of questioning on Thursday. The case is expected to continue into the New Year

The Guardian : Bernie Ecclestone tells court: £12m cost of my daughter's wedding was absurd
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/nov/10/bernie-ecclestone-denies-wedding-bill

Given that he has already breezily claimed this week that he paid a German banker £27.5m to keep his tax affairs private, it is clear that Bernie Ecclestone has a different concept of "value for money" to ordinary mortals.

But in a Munich court on Thursday the Formula 1 tycoon revealed that he is not always so blase about his fortune – it was "absurd", he said, that his youngest daughter's wedding this year cost "in excess of £12m".

The startling admission came during Ecclestone's second day of questioning as a witness in the biggest corruption trial in modern German history.

He was testifying against Gerhard Gribkowsky, a former executive at the state-owned BayernLB bank, who is accused of accepting Ecclestone's $44m (£27.5m) in return for smoothing over the 2005 sale of the bank's $839m stake in F1 to CVC, the private equity group.

Gribkowsky, a cigar and fast car-loving 53-year-old, insists the £27.5m was a perfectly legitimate consultancy fee for his role in the sale.

But in court on Thursday Ecclestone repeated his claim that he paid up only because he was "shaken down" by the German, who, feared Ecclestone, was going to give HM Revenue and Customs "false" information about his financial affairs which could leave him with a tax bill "in excess of £2bn".

The 81-year-old brought up his daughter Petra's opulent wedding in an attempt to illustrate his claim that he and his ex-wife, Croatian model Slavika, 53, never discussed business or financial affairs.

This is crucial to Ecclestone's insistence that Bambino, the multibillion-pound offshore trust set up in Slavika's name containing the bulk of his assets, is not in fact controlled by him.

Around half of the £27.5m which ended up in Gribkowsky's bank account came from Bambino's coffers.

Ecclestone said that Slavika and Bambino's trustees decided to contribute to the "shakedown" payment of their own accord, rather than because he ordered them to do so.

They were independently fearful of an investigation by British tax inspectors, he said. Not that they ever discussed it.

This matters because Ecclestone says he had been advised that the trust's balance would be subject to a 40% tax claim from Revenue and Customs if they believe he has anything to do with it: an allegation Ecclestone has said he thought Gribkowsky was going to make.

"I never took any business problems home to my wife," said Ecclestone. "Here's a little demonstration of what really happens.

"My youngest daughter got married and I thought as father of the bride that I should pay for the wedding. When it was suggested how much they were going to spend on drinks, I thought it was absurd and I managed to upset my daughter and my wife, and then she [Slavika] spent in excess of £12m on my daughter's wedding."

Until then, the wedding in the medieval town of Bracciano, near Rome, was thought to have cost "just" £5m – the bill allegedly included performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as £800,000 for "vintage wines".

The judge, Peter Noll, pointed out that Petra's wedding only took place recently, six years after the £27.5m "bribe" was paid – and almost three years after Slavika divorced Ecclestone for what is widely believed to be an eye-watering sum.

Their relationship nowadays may be different from that six years ago, he said. Ecclestone said nothing.

During the two days in the witness box – actually a witness table in Germany – Ecclestone revealed other glimpses into his unusual life.

To support his claim that Slavika independently decided the trust should pay Gribkowsky, Ecclestone said the two got on well so could easily have discussed it.

"They were drinking partners," he said. He wasn't too happy about their friendship because he worried Slavika would ask the German if her then husband had "any girlfriends".

One of Gribkowsky's lawyers then asked for clarification, saying "you were worried she would find out about your girlfriends?" No, no, said Ecclestone. "Girlfriend. Singular.''

Just before Ecclestone rushed off to fly in his private jet to the F1 grand prix in Abu Dhabi, he was asked a final few questions by a man from the German tax authorities. The brief exchange gave an illuminating insight into what it's like to be one of the richest men in world sport.

If you believed you were being threatened by Gribkowsky, asked the taxman, why didn't you ask for the £27.5m back, or tell the police? Well, said Ecclestone, "It was one of those things in life you want to forget about."

The case continues.

Vettel's Streak Ends - Hamilton Wins

Sebastian Vettel leads in to turn one, but would retire after spinning off at the next corner with a puncture, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina, November 13, 2011 :

Lewis Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, leading every lap . He inherited the lead from Vettel, who suffered a rear puncture after the first few corner's of the race and spun. Vettel was able to make it to the pits, but his suspension received too much damage to be able to continue .

Sebastian Vettel limps back to the pits with a deflated right rear tyre, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina, November 13, 2011
12692.jpg

One thing that I found most interesting was Vettel's actions after he got out his car. He was visibly upset, but never lost his composure. He immediately set out to discover exactly why his tire failed. He calmly examined his the rear suspension of his car with one of his mechanics, and he then looked at the teams telemetry to find out more. He didn't immediately leave the circuit in a huff like other driver's might have. After he learned more and calmed down, he then sat down next to Christian Horner at the Red Bull pit command center and watched the race.

Fernando Alonso drove the wheels off of his Ferrari to finish second, with Button finishing third. Ferrari have not developed their 2011 car for quite some time now - putting all of their effort into next years car - and is not as fast the Mclaren, who have continued to develop their current car. By sheer will, determination and raw driving talent, Alonso managed to get ahead of both Weber and Button on the first lap the race, demonstrating why he's one of the best driver's in F1. In 2011, only 5 driver's have stood on the podium after the race - both the Mclaren and Red Bull driver's, and Alonso.

Just wanted to say thanks to Big Eggy for starting this thread, and to RMS for doing a bang-up job with all the info and updates you put in.

Going to be more reliant on this thread for 2012 as Sky is taking over the majority of the coverage :(

Cheers, Mitch

Cheers Mitch!

And another BIG thanks to RMS for all the great info.

While i've been away for the winter from IC mag i went to the Coventry Motor/transport Museum and took some photos that i thought i'd share here.

Not sure what this was.. had a Coventry Climax engine though

Jaguar or an Arrows?? i had the kids with me and was doing a lot of running after them making sure they wern't touching things

Edit: I should have added that this is a really great place to visit.. if your ever in Coventry and need to kill some time and entrance is free! There is a load of other stuff in there cars from 1900's loads of motor bikes, some huge tractors and old buses.

They also have Thrust 1 and ThrustSSC (Current Land Speed record holder) the ThrustSSC forms part of a simulator which i didn't go on because of my kids being 3 & 1 years old but my sister in law said it was really good.

I would but my new job is not the kind i can kill my lunch on icmag.. And way to hard to maintain from my phone.

What did you think of the first round? Good to see williams might have found some form and Renaults and the mercs seem quick.

BBC coverage wasn't bad either.. I liked the fact that at the end you had all the drivers interviews in one go rather than the usual gap filling. I rarely get to too the races live so is kinda like the new set up.. Although I was up at 6am on saturday looking for a feed online, best one I found was a korean channel and I put radio 5 over the top.. The was a 10 second delay though.

Hey up guys seems like it'll be an interesting season.

I think I would have been happiest with a result something like Button, Hamilton, Shuie! But was still promising.

Hopefully it will be less like last season, and more like 2010 where it went right down to the wire?

I just had to watch the highlights on BBC too, wasn't too bad as I was busy all day anyway, but it is more exciting watching it live. I have to avoid facebook or the internet or TV or radio to avoid spoiling the result for myself.

Where's RMS at? :)
