Earthly desires, karma, and suffering. They are called "paths" because one leads to the other. Earthly desires, which include greed, anger, foolishness, arrogance, and doubt, give rise to actions that create evil karma. The effect of this evil karma then manifests itself as suffering. Suffering aggravates earthly desires, leading to further misguided action, which in turn brings on more evil karma and suffering. Trapped in this cycle, people are destined to suffer in the lower states of existence known as the six paths. In this way, maintaining a self-perpetuating causal relationship, the three paths function to prevent a person from attaining Buddhahood.

In The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra and Great Concentration and Insight, T'ient'ai (538-597) states that the three paths of earthly desires, karma, and suffering are none other than the three virtues of the Dharma body, wisdom, and emancipation. In The Entity of the Mystic Law, Nichiren (1222-1282) states, "Such persons, who honestly discard expedient means, put faith in the Lotus Sutra alone, and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, will transform the three paths of earthly desires, karma, and suffering into the three virtues of the Dharma body, wisdom, and emancipation" (WND/420).The three virtues are inseparable from the three paths. One cannot acquire the three virtues apart from the three paths. Therefore there is no need to eliminate the three paths; all one has to do is to manifest the true nature of the three paths, which is ultimately the three virtues. T'ient'ai pointed out that the true nature of the three paths is none other than the three virtues, while Nichiren taught that the three virtues are potential within the three paths, and become manifest from among them.

Also, threefold truth, triple truth, or three perceptions of the truth. The truth of nonsubstantiality, the truth of temporary existence, and the truth of the Middle Way. The three integral aspects of the truth, or ultimate reality, formulated by T'ient'ai (538-597) in The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra and Great Concentration and Insight. The truth of nonsubstantiality means that phenomena have no existence of their own; their true nature is non-substantial, indefinable in terms of existence or nonexistence. The truth of temporary existence means that, although non-substantial, all things possess a temporary reality that is in constant flux. The truth of the Middle Way means that the true nature of phenomena is that they are neither non-substantial nor temporary, though they display attributes of both. The Middle Way is the essence of things that continues either in a manifest or a latent state. According to T'ient'ai's explanation, the Tripitaka teaching and the connecting teaching do not reveal the truth of the Middle Way and therefore lack the three truths. The specific teaching reveals the three truths but shows them as being separate from and independent of one another; that is, it does not teach that these three are inseparable aspects of all phenomena. This view is called the separation of the three truths. The perfect teaching views the three as an integral whole, each possessing all three within itself. This is called the unification of the three truths.

11. The Emergence of the Treasure Tower

Text: “This way one will quickly attain / the unsurpassed Buddha way.”

Glosses on the right:
Buddha way—accepting and upholding

Glosses on the left:
unsurpassed Buddha way—ordinary mortal is none other than the highest state, [Buddhahood]

Alternative reading: The unsurpassed Buddha way / one has quickly attained.

Summary: This passage is saying that, if one is an upholder, a person of the wonderful precepts of perfect and sudden enlightenment, and if one attains the two stages of near-perfect and perfect enlightenment in a single moment of life, this is what it means to “quickly attain.” To chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is to “quickly attain.”

Summary: This passage is speaking of the “change” that occurs when one realizes that the three categories of illusion in their entirety are the three truths. When one chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the three categories of illusion are none other the three virtues [of Dharma body, wisdom, and emancipation].

I'm here, absolutely enjoying every second of my time reading and re-reading over and over again this great on point direction. Without Study, I couldn't have advanced my life into being a grateful and functional SGI general. It takes courage, it takes heart to start chanting, I know it takes even more energy to keep going, but developing my doubt free faith, studying this thread, and chanting as much as possible to really just always be on a track of improvement and working with President Ikeda, his network and us to advance world-wide kosen-rufu.

So in two minutes, my abode is going to be open for daimoku and gongyo for an hour and a half! I wish you all could join me. Babba, since I saw that thread with your snake situation I've been chanting non-stop, damn it, I was pissed, but I'm so glad your ok. Fucker had a rattler and your my kenzokumyo and I want you safe always brother. Momma too, I love you both and want you both to win non-stop and keep advancing with me for the rest of this life and the next in this amazing faith. Same to you Tom, Desi, Socal, Bonz, Scegy, all of you everybody, Trichy too, I'm talking everybody.

Nichiren is telling us we're all Buddhas and have been Buddhas! Yep, all the best is yet to come, I'm so thrilled to be alive right now, time to chant! My meeting is starting :)

13. Encouraging Devotion

Text: “We care nothing for our bodies / but are anxious only for the unsurpassed way.”

Glosses on the right:
bodies or lives—element of the body and element of the mind

Glosses on the left:
care nothing for—never begrudge
bodies or lives—even our bodies or lives

Summary: This passage is pointing out that our bodies and minds have from the beginning been in the nature of evil habits, impermanent, illusory, made up of the four elements and the five components. But the true reality of original enlightenment is something that abides forever. It is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

14. Peaceful practices

Text: “All phenomena / are empty, without beginning, / without any constant abiding / without arising or extinction.”

Alternative reading: All phenomena / are empty, without being; / both non-being and being constantly abide, / without arising or extinction.

Summary: This passage is saying that, since the Wonderful Law has always abided constantly, the coming into being and extinction of [the living beings in] the six paths have from the beginning been a non-coming into being. Therefore it is said that there is no “arising or extinction.” Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has from the beginning been “without arising or extinction.”

15. Emerging from the Earth

Text: “And in order that day and night with constant diligence / they may seek the Buddha way.”

Alternative reading: Constant diligence day and night—this as always been the way to seek the Buddha way.

Summary: This passage is saying that, if in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is such a diligent practice.
