"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,'cannot be false in any way."

"Though calamities may come, they can be changed into good fortune."

"The word cosmos is also a synonym for the universe, the starry heavens above. There is a cosmos within us (the microcosm of our life) and a cosmos outside us (the macrocosm of the universe). The life of each one of us is like a bright cosmos flower that blooms in wondrous rhythm with the law of the universe, the Mystic Law."

"The more we talk about our Buddhist practice with heartfelt conviction and sincerity, the more we can plant the seed of Buddhahood in others' hearts. Even if they do not immediately begin practicing themselves, the time will definitely come when the seed that has been planted in their lives will germinate into an aspiration for faith and produce beautiful flowers of happiness.

"Even if we were to give someone endless riches and treasures, it would not guarantee their lasting happiness. The only way to do that is to share the Mystic Law with them."

"The Buddha wrote that one should become the master of one's mind rather than let one's mind master oneself. This is what I mean when I emphatically urge you to give up even your body, and never begrudge even your life for the sake of the Lotus Sutra."

"Shakubuku—the act of sharing the supreme Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with others—is a spiritual battle to "break and subdue" (Jpn. shakubuku) the fundamental darkness or negativity inherent in human life that plunges people into suffering and misery. When the power of goodness is weak, the power of evil intensifies. If such a state of affairs is allowed to prevail, genuine happiness and enlightenment will forever remain out of people's reach. That's why we must stand up and proclaim the correct teaching with the "courage of a lion king" (WND-1, 997)."

"Therefore, one should by all means persist in preaching the Lotus Sutra and causing them to hear it. Those who put their faith in it will surely attain Buddhahood, while those who slander it will establish a 'poison-drum relationship' with it and will likewise attain Buddhahood."

16. The Life Span of the Thus Come One

Text: “The Thus Come One perceives the true aspect of the threefold world exactly as it is. There is no ebb or flow of birth and death.”

Summary: This passage states that to perceive that all the ten thousand phenomena are the eternally endowed three bodies of the Buddha is what is called “perceiving the true aspect” of the threefold world. Since they are the enlightened entity that is eternally endowed, how can one say that there is birth and death?

17. Distinctions in Benefits

Text: “and if he holds to the blessings of this single-mindedness / and with it seeks the unsurpassed way,”

Summary: This passage is saying that all the ten thousand practices and ten thousand good deeds are solely for the purpose of manifesting the three bodies inherent in the originally enlightened single mind. Since good and evil are a single entity, it is called “the blessing of single-mindedness [or a single mind]” Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the blessing of single-mindedness [or a single mind].

18. The Benefits of Responding with Joy

Text: “saying, “This sutra is profound and wonderful, / hard to encounter in a ten thousand, ten thousand kalpas!”

Summary: This passage is saying that, since all things are the Wonderful Law, the manifesting of this fundamental principal inherent in the single mind is a very wonderful and unparalleled action. It is the wonder of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

"Many hear about and accept this sutra, but when great obstacles arise, just as they were told would happen, few remember it and bearit firmly in mind. To accept is easy; to continue is difficult. But Buddhahood lies in continuing faith."

"Buddhism is manifested in society, and as such it is the mission of those who practise it to introduce Buddhist principles to their respective communities and be active participants of their times. This requires us to polish our character and gain the trust and respect of those around us. Human revolution—in other words, the positive transformation of one’s character—is the driving force for social change."

Let us change the way we perceive our "karma" transforming it into our own unique "mission". This is the Buddhism that teaches us how to "change poison into medicine". To the extent to which we have undergone hardships and challenging times our life condition naturally expands and elevates. Confident of this, let us advance forwards with a strong and focussed prayer!

19. Benefits of the Teacher of the Law

Text: “by detecting their scent, he knows all those / who enter meditation or emerge from meditation.”

Glosses on the right:
enter meditation—quietude
emerge from meditation—release from quietude

Glosses on the left:
enter meditation—the unchanging [and eternal] truth, death
emerge from meditation—the wisdom of the truth that functions in accordance with changing circumstances, life
all—the Ten Worlds

Summary: This passage is saying that, when the single mind is in a state of quietude, this is “to enter meditation,” and when the single mind is released from quietude, this is to “emerge from meditation.” To “know all those” is to know the original enlightenment that is both quietude and release from quietude. To enter meditation and emerge from meditation is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
