Those who have experienced great suffering must win in life and become happy. If you're always losing and miserable, then you are not practicing the Daishonin's Buddhism correctly. You are not following the true path in life. Buddhism teaches the means by which the sad can become happy and the happy become happier still. That is the reason for our practice.

My lady has been battling asmatic bronchitis and I have been battling a wicked sinus and chest infection but I'm on antibiotics now and today is going to be a great day.

Nice to see you Babba and Tom! Socal thanks so much brother for keeping me grounded with the bold guidance, I really need it everyday, can't go a day without it! This practice begins anew everyday with the rise of the sun and the morning gongyo and daimoku. Keep on fighting with a positive spirit, I will try harder today to get things back on track for myself, I have not had the most intrepid and winning spirit lately, but there is no day like today to recapture that positive essence! Thanks Socal for the recent consistency, your a very good brother.

Hello Bonzo!

SGI PRESIDENT IKEDA'S DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT

We need to cultivate a state of life where we can thoroughly enjoy ourselves at all times. We should have such joy that even at the time of death we can declare with a happy smile: "That was wonderful! Where shall I go next?" This is the state of mind of a person with strong faith. Such individuals will be reborn without delay and in a form and in a place exactly according with their desires. Faith enables us to attain the kind of generous and all-embracing state of mind where we can enjoy everything in our lives.

When one has had the rare good fortune to be born a human being, and
the further good fortune to encounter the teachings of Buddhism, how
can one waste this opportunity? If one is going to take faith at all,
then among all the various teachings of the Mahayana and the Hinayana,
provisional and true doctrines, one should believe in the one vehicle,
the true purpose for which the Buddhas come into the world and the
direct path to attaining enlightenment for all living beings.

THE DAIMOKU OF NAM-MYOHO-RENGE-KYO

Nichiren Daishonin's enlightenment does not derive from the Lotus
Sutra, he often cites the sutra to help explain his teaching. Rather,
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the direct manifestation of his enlightenment
to the Law of time without beginning, of which Shakyamuni's Lotus
Sutra is only a description. Historically, the Lotus Sutra preceded
Nichiren Daishonin's revelation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but the law of
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo always has been and always will be. Nichiren
Daishonin makes clear in this passage that chanting this "one
essential phrase" is the fundamental cause for attaining
enlightenment — an enlightenment that cannot be gained merely by
studying the text of the Lotus Sutra.

"When we pray to the Gohonzon and perform gongyo, we are
enveloped in a fresh breeze from the palace of the ninth
consciousness, the unchanging reality which reigns over all life's
functions. It is as though we are seeing a beautiful moon in our
own hearts. Nothing can compare to this perpetually fresh sense of
fulfillment in the depths of one's life, as you know through your
own experience.

Today there are many people who say they would be happy if
only they had money. Certainly from one perspective this is
understandable, but there are many who quarrel and even lose their
lives for the sake of money. In the final analysis, the value of
money is determined not solely by the amount one possesses, but also
by his state of life, which determines how he makes use of money. I
believe that at the present time we are losing sight of this. In
this sense, we must understand that happiness or unhappiness in the
true sense is ultimately determined by one's state of life.

It is for the sake of establishing true happiness that we
carry out our faith. Our daily life belongs to what Buddhism
describes as the realm of the nine worlds from Hell through
Bodhisattva. It is inevitable that in society, the realm of the
nine worlds, we will meet with various troubles and sufferings.
However, by virtue of the Mystic Law, our strong faith can transform
the three paths of earthly desires, karma and suffering into the
three virtues of the property of the Law, wisdom and freedom.
Therefore, by chanting daimoku to the Gohonzon each day and basing
one's daily life upon the Mystic Law, without even realizing it, one
is expanding his state of life and is establishing true happiness.

In maintaining faith, we must be careful to avoid such
attitudes as haughtiness, pretension or conceit. True faith is to
pray single-mindedly to the Gohonzon, to continue the practice of
gongyo and daimoku and forge ahead untiringly. If one yields to his
own haughtiness, pretension or arrogance and becomes inclined to
consider the Gohonzon lightly or scorn his fellow members, he will
obstruct his own benefit.

One should pray earnestly to the Gohonzon about his desires
with total honesty and straightforwardness. Beyond that, since we
are human beings, I do not deny the role of pride or appearances in
secular affairs, but honest faith in the Gohonzon should be the
basis of one's existence. Nothing is more delicate than the human
mind. However, if one can only maintain determined faith toward the
Gohonzon and carry through with his practice, that in itself will
become the means to break through any difficulty."

Ch'ung-hua and Yu were the children of commoners, but both were
extremely filial. Hearing of this, King Yao and King Shun summoned
Ch'ung-hua and Yu, and abdicated their thrones to them. Commoners
became royalty in a day. Just as a commoner can become a king in this
present life, so can an ordinary person become a Buddha instantly.
This is the heart of the doctrine of three thousand realms in a single
moment of life.

"Faith includes unfathomable benefit and limitless good fortune; it
contains great power as vast as the universe, which can even
transform the land in which one lives. Faith is the source of
endless joy, limitless wisdom and boundless compassion, enabling one
to fully use the treasures of the storehouse and the treasures of
the body toward the establishment of eternal happiness. All of you
already possess this supreme "nourishment" for human life. Al that
remains is how to go about tapping its limitless power.

Life passes quickly. If you spend your youth meaninglessly,
hesitating, complaining or criticizing others, or if you are
defeated by your own lazy nature, you will soon find that your youth
will have passed you by. Each and every day is very important. It
is my hope that you will live a fulfilled life in which you feel as
though each day is as valuable as a thousand years or even a
thousand aeons. For this purpose, while young, you should persevere
amid life's realities as you live with an expansive state of life,
the kind of life-condition in which you always ponder the vastness
of the universe and the eternity of time."

Taking faith in this Buddhism does not mean that all our problems
will disappear. Actually, embracing the Mystic Law and practicing
shakubuku for the benefit of others may mean that you are busier, so
that you end up facing even more troubles. But each day, live in
such a manner that creates infinite value; just as "infinite meaning
derives from the one Law," "one day" can be equal in value to the
enormous length of "one hundred kalpas." Thus a life-condition
filled with supreme joy and tremendous value, unattainable in any
other way, is developed. Herein lies the profound significance of
embracing this faith and advancing toward kosen-rufu.

As I wrote in my Essays: The Human Revolution, Mr. Toda once
encouraged the youth as follows: "A son of the revolution will not
grow if he dreams only of a relaxed, peaceful life. I would like
you to be the kind of person who maintains harmony between intellect
and sentiment, someone who during the day sweats because of working,
studying and challenging oneself, and yet still has the time to
stand on the beach conversing with the waves of the ocean, or, at
night, to make friends with the stars."

Namaste Fellow chanters. Just wondering anyone else chanting the Gayatri Mantra? Om bhoor bhuvah swah tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dheemahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayat. Its essence:

Om – Brahma or Almighty God
bhoor – Embodiment of vital spiritual energy (praana)
bhuvah – Destroyer of sufferings
svah – Embodiment of happiness
tat – That
savituh – Bright, Luminous like the Sun
vareyam – Best, Most exalted
bhargo – Destroyer of sins
devasya – Divine
dheemahi – May imbibe
dhiyo – Intellect
yo – Who
nah – Our
prachodayat – May inspire
In short it is a prayer to the Almighty Supreme God, the Creator of entire cosmos, the essence of our life existence, who removes all our sins, pains and sufferings and grants happiness; beseeching His divine grace to inculcate within us His Divinity and Brilliance, which may purify us and guide our wisdom on the righteous path.

Selection Source: Bodhisattvas Are the Buddha's Emissaries Who Lead People to Happiness, Lectures of the "Expedient Means" and "Life Span" Chapters, Vol. 3, pp. 77-78

On one level, Nichiren Daishonin struggled to spread the Mystic Law as the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Superior Practices (Jogyo), leader of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth.

Needless to say, on the level of the implicit doctrine of the Lotus Sutra, he is the original Buddha who left behind the great beneficial medicine of Nam-myoho-renge- kyo that can lead all people throughout the Latter Day to enlightenment. The Daishonin is himself the "excellent Physician" and the "father" of all people.

Accordingly, from this standpoint the messenger is none other than those who advance kosen-rufu in strict accord with the Daishonin's teachings.

On one level as Bodhisattvas of the Earth, and on another as followers of the original Buddha, we are emissaries of the Thus Come One who tell others about the supreme teaching of the Mystic Law and show actual proof of its greatness. This is the honorable status we enjoy.

To accept, uphold, read, recite, take delight in, and protect all the eight volumes and twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra is called the comprehensive practice. To accept, uphold, and protect the "Expedient Means" chapter and the "Life Span" chapter is called the abbreviated practice. And simply to chant one four-phrase verse or the daimoku, and to protect those who do so, is called the essential practice. Hence, among these three kinds of practice, comprehensive, abbreviated, and essential, the daimoku is defined as the essential practice.

"Single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddha" may be read as follows:
single-mindedly observing the Buddha, concentrating one's mind on
seeing the Buddha, and when looking at one's own mind, perceiving that
it is the Buddha.
