BEST GUARD DOG?

S

SeaMaiden

are you thinkin of the Pyrenees Mountain Dog?
Sea Maiden...Mountain Lions and Bears...jesus...that must be pretty scary taking the dog for a walk like? I mean Mountain Lions are Cougars I think? You must live in a fantastic place..awesome...

Considering *my* size and inability to something as simple as run..? Yeah, it's why I have the pepper spray (the real stuff, not mace). The dog I have now serves, at best as bait. Unfortunately, she's quite athletic and can get away whereas I can't. So, we're gettin' another dog!

It very well may be the Pyrenees, that sounds familiar. I'm gonna look for a pic. I bring it up because where we like to go for walks (Dave runs, I walk), there are some folks running a couple of herds of wool goats of some sort, and they've got a very aggressive, very large, white dog that lives with them.

YES! That's the dog. It's huge, and the one I'm talking about is *not* friendly, and the issue is that where we walk goes across private ranch property. It's incredibly beautiful, yes, and I totally understand why they have the dog, but it and the herd are able to go on and across the road. I'm glad I haven't run across them while with my dog, because I don't want to unleash her, but if that dog went after her I'd feel as though I have to. The times I've come across him (without my dog) I've been rather briskly escorted along. I always make sure to maintain an even, calm pace (gotta, can't go much faster!).

you know everyone wants that perfect guard dog not realizing that you have to make a choice family pet or guard dog can't have both no difference then having a out side dog or inside dog you can;t have both they never get there full winter coat yup people get up throw there dog outside while there at work then inside when there home not good idea
having a guard dog is the same thing only thing guard dog needs to know is family and other house hold pets and that is it .
When i know company is coming over my dogs are put in there kennel away from people when i go to bed at night dogs are free to roam and do there job
having a guard dog comes with its perks and other crap like insurances just incase dogs eat some one so actual postings of guard dog on duty signs , and no tresspassing has to be noticable to public for insurance reasons. Gates high enough and locked so kids can;t get in etc
and on another note being able to control you pet one thing having a guard dog other is being able to control them cause they will test you for dominence how many times you here people not being able to control there pets
so if your going for a guard dog or pet do your research for all areas of the breed and think twice having any pet is a 10 year + commitment do you feel up to it ????
I want a constant companion who'll completely fuck up anyone who tries to hit me. That's what I want. That animal will, by necessity, be extremely well trained, and will live long enough that I won't have to do this thing again too soon. 10 years is a minimum I hope for.

I know I can do this whole Schutzhund thing, with the exceptions of being able to kneel and run. Dominance? Just try me. Every. Day. I've done it before, am doing it now with a dog that I know doesn't protect me. My aim is for exactly that which you say cannot be had--a 'pet' (a dog you can allow around strangers and other non-resident family members) and a 'guard' dog, and I usually get what I aim for. I know what I'm capable of, and while this won't be a cakewalk, neither is it as complex as, for example, teaching a horse dressage, as it can be accomplished in a relative handful of years.

I'm lucky enough to own a german shepherd, czech shepherd, and part-time American shepherd. For me they are the complete package of beauty, intelligence, loyalty, and above all individuality. The natural instinct the shepherd has when it comes too protecting it's family is astonishing too say the least. If you're looking for a guard dog and family dog, it really is your best combo. The other man-eating dogs are generally just as good, but the lack elegance imo that a shepherd has.

I have had shepherds my entire life and have never had a friend or family member bitten. Please do the research, which is available from purchase at rayallenk9.com. Training a dog to bite cannot be done by the owner, nor should it be done as someones Guinea pig. Only dogs i've ever seen bite people off command went against those two rules. Schutzhund is mostly tracking finding and obedience, i highly doubt a novice trainer will reach schutzhund III (bite work) effectively. It's best to seek professional assistance for any and all bite work. On that note...owning a schutzhund II female shepherd - it's worth every single penny.

edit note: 944s - my german shepherd who is trained to bite things, shred, and sink teeth on command for a "kill" was just last week around a 2 year old who was climbing all over her and pulling her hair, ripping at her face, and trying to ride her. Know what the dog did to the kid? Licked the childs face and cuddled up next too her.

any dog that has a big bark

hell, a black lab can be a good deterrent to bad people, and a loving pet to you

hell, a sign that says beware of dog works as well

but if you really need a GUARD dog/attack dog, then there is only one option I'd trust

hiya,,slackx under no circumstances were i putting down the gs breed,,its my wifes favourite breed and she had one as a family pet as a child,,they are a beautiful breed and its a shame we dont see more of them in the uk other then police dogs,,but there was a problem in the uk with the gs in the 70s, i have no doubt how cool your dogs are with the kids,,as our rotties and especially our pitbull have always been,,i really am not being negative about the gs breed,,70s was a long time ago but may still affect the breeds popularity in the uk even today imho,,regards s2

I thought you were into guard sharpés..... i believe you had a story of one eating a pitty.... Az

Nope. That wasn't me bro.

I've been looking at some very nice, very promising GSD pups, I prefer a bitch over a dog, m'self because they're not going to pee on everything.

Look at it like this hun. Would you rather walk into a bar fight with your girlfriend or a linebacker? Difference between boys and girls. In the guard breeds, you're gonna see females in the competitions, but the males are gonna be the ones getting the job done. Every LONG once in a while a female will come in at the top of the class but very rarely. The males just have a stronger drive than the females. Not saying they don't have any drive, just not the same as the males. I have a Cane Corso going through attack/defense training atm. She's all heart, won't back down, fearless, smart, and works hard to name a few qualities. She's a good dog that the prey drive hadn't been entirely breed out of. But she doesn't have the strength of the same qualities listed above as the males. That's why I'm considering the Malinois or the Dutch Shepard. Besides, with those 2 breeds you don't need to feed em half a cow every day, lol

I couldn't afford to feed your dogs!

Those dogs are massive.

lol the guys are pretty small as well

my only problem with german shepherds is when they go senile they go a bit primal,, kill sheep eat peoples face's etc.. still alot of wolf in there, just looking at the skulls shows that imo.. can be some of the nicest and some of the worst,, the hair is a pain..

Raise the dog properly and they'll only eat the face off of intruders :)

"senile" quite a few know this first hand,,, it doesnt matter about training.. lots of farmers end old german shepherds lives chasing their sheep.. and most dogs dont do what they do when they get to that stage of dementia, no other real comparisons ive heard of tbh either..

Just remember, if you love your dog you wont expect your dog to die protecting you; you will die to protect your dog.

wait

if I die for my dog who is gonna feed him?

makes no sense to kill yourself for a pet, he is my best friend, but he will not live as long as me to begin with

I love this little guy with all my heart, but come on now

What do you need a guard dog for anyway? To stop someone breaking into your house?
Then if that's the case get bars for you windows and a steel door.
There have been a couple of instances around here in the last few years where people stabbed police german shepheards to death with a knife when the cops sooled the dog onto them. So dogs are not infallible, they can be killed with a gun or a knife.
All you need is a dog that will alert you if someone is around; if you have prepared then that's all you need from them.
