150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

Hey it depends on persanal preference I think. If you want a more clear head high then go with 100% cloudy trichs if you want a knowck your ass out stone then go with 60-100% amber. If you dont have anything to check your trichs go by the pistol development. When judging by that you want to make sure atleast 70% are dried with no new white pistols coming out.I hope I helped alittle.

I got my Molino piece today from grasscity.com.I am going to buy a downtube a hash slider and a pre-cooler from EDIT.com.

Hits are very smooth.I had alitte bit of that HB nug left and the hits were very very smooth. My other bong I used to smoke the HB out of made me cough alot.

Hey everyone i just got my 150 hps from e-cono light today so i will be joining the club soon, but i have a question. does anyone have a vapor tight fixture from e-conolight? and if you do, do you have it mounted horizontally? i'm not sure if the bulb is a universal mount of not.

bag seed...day 66. I thought I might have a little indica goin' on here but judging by all the white pistols I still have a few weeks. just guessing. honestly, I have no f'n idea.

hey igrow, nice big bong. used to have several that size when I was a pup. Now I'm old but still love a good ol' fashioned water bong.

here's a shot of my cabinet with grow rooms painted white, utility room black and weather stripping on the doors.

phr3d0m2gr0 - Several folks have already used the vapor tight fixture from E-Conolight with great success. Most disassemble them and turn them into a remote ballast lamp. Its easily done and there is a link to a DIY instruction in Sugabear's signature. Unless you are working with an unusual set-up, for best effect you'll want to use the bulb horizontally with some type of reflector above.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

Yeah i know all the remote ballast info, and i'm planning on writing my own DIY with more pictures. I was just wondering if the bulb included can be mounted horizontal, vertical, or either way. I e-mailed e-cono light and made sure it's ok to mount horizontally and they assured me it was fine.

Thanks for the response though.

cjk, look at the trichs with a 20x or 30x glass or microscope. I just got one of those cheap 30x microscopes from ebay ($12.00/free shipping) and it sucks. I'm probably gonna get a jeweler's loop. awesome lookin' weed, what's the strain?

thx man. i have a scope but on one plant all the hairs are done but the trichs are still just cloudy, not one turned amber. as for strain, i have no idea. the plant in this picture was actually a hermie bagseed that was gonna get chopped but luckily i let her live. no pollination or anything. i lucked out

Careful, I just had my bullshit meter recalibrated

cjk: Those pix must be old if all the hairs are done. You could harvest some now (or soon), and the rest when you see more ambure trichs. That way, if you're able to reveg the plant, you'll know when to harvest next time.

unlike larger HID bulbs every single 150 bulb I have come across was Universal mount -(U)- i.e. can be mounted vert or horizontal.

I cant believe the day has came.I harvested and am feeling very good after the scissor I just smoked.tasty with purple hues.

I think I will get around a 1/2oz which for my first time indoor is good enough for me.I killed the other plant but am making bubble with that also.I plant on starting some more seeds very soon.

not the plant that's pictured. it's a different plant

Horizontal vs verticle

Horizontal vs verticle

I'm in the final stages of reworking my small (18"x27"x33") cab for another grow. I painted the sides and floor flat white but still using that flimsy-ass emergency blanket mylar on the back, doors, and ceiling. I mounted a remote ballasted 150 hps bulb vertically. I'll be vegging with 4-8 daylight cfls (adding more bulbs as the plant(s) get bigger) that are in a rack thing but some cfls be wll be used as side lights. My question concerns the 150 hps bub that's mounted vertically. I could rework it and put it up horizontally but I don't see any real advantage there. Especially after leaving room between the bulb and the ceiling for circulation, I would think a horizontal mount would only gain an inch or two in growing room. I wonder if the light the plants would be getting is that much different between a horizontal or vertical mount. It makes sense that a horizontal mount would broadcast more direct light, but does anybody think there'd be that much difference in a small cab like mine? Thanks for any input in advance.
By the way medical marijuana advocates really should check out:

These people really need help. The case goes to trial in February. This could be precedent setting and ground-breaking. I wrote to my congressman through the NORML website. It's easy. Please help whatever way you think might do some good.

ultimate or overkill?

ultimate or overkill?

ive been running 150w for a while now, and a solo bulb just isnt cutting it in the space i have. with only 50cfm worth of ventilation the temps arent even warm when i check them so im looking at upping the venting a little bit and adding another 150 to 300w worth of hps. i currently have an ebay bought bulb hanging vertically, but will be swapping that out for 2 vapor tights mounted to the sides in a fixed position. the reason i say ultimate or overkill is if i leave all 3 bulbs in there ill have 142 wpsf. my new vent fan will prolly be 110cfm, which should take care of it efficiently, what do you guys think?

hello there!
i am a new member to the club.
took me a while to go from a cfl getho cab

to a normal , bit better 150 hps:

new photos will be uploaded soon...

basicly, the upper level is the hps, now in 12/12
for a nice arjan's ultra haze #3 and a bag seed.
and the bottom with a 28w cfl for a slow slow veg for the clones i took from the haze , so when i harvest the haze i will be able to but the clones right in.

just a thought: any difference between 1 150w hps and two 70w hps?
although the 150 is stronger, it seems that the ability to position the 2 70w is an advantage.
what ya think?

what ya think?

two 70s = 2 x 6,300 initial lumens = 12,600 initial lumens
one 150 = 15,700 initial lumens

IMO opinion that difference of 300 lumens is not worth the more spread out coverage - I think a properly reflected 150 can cover the equivalent area better than two 70s.

That said I have seen some decent 2 x 70 watt grows. So if you've got 70 watt lamps laying around go for it!

If you're goal is better coverage I think the new T-5 floros are the way to go.

on a side note I just discovered Eye is making a 150 watt conversion bulb that runs in a 175 Metal Halide or Mercury Vapor unfortunately the bulb is $50 [ search on High Pressure Sodium - NH150CE/EN - EYE International #62345 ] ... in case folks don't know 175 mercury vapors are very easy to find pretty much anywhere for cheap. At $50 a bulb though it probably wouldn't be econimical...

hi, mid-east-stone ...

it looks like you have put some big chunks of mirror in there. if memory serves me, mirrors are actually LESS reflective than flat white paint . i'm not sure how much less, but you may want to check it out.

welcome to the 150 club !

abirdintheair ... thats a heck of a lot of watts/sq.ft., if you have the heat under control then the only thing you might have to worry about is light-burn, which is a very real possiblity in a small cabinet. i would go with less wattage, but then, i am a cheapskate !

well were i at we're seeing negative ambient temps, and the solo 150w bulb only burned my plants when i had my ebay reflector on it, ever since it was removed no problems. 142w psf is the area coverage but all together i have like 9cu feet. right now the bulb hanging vertical is about 4 inches away from the canopy with no heat stress issues. the fix mouned ones would be kind of like supplemental light considering i wont be able to set them right on the canopy. besides $50 for 30,000 extra lumens is a steal IMHO, and if 50cfm cools one efficiently 110 cfm should be able to handle 2 or 3, i guess i should just jump in head first :rasta:

WHen should I put my buds into a jar to cure?Do I wait till I can snap the stem on all the buds in everyplace. The stems are pretty dry right now some snap but by the buds they are still moist is this the time to put them in jars?

From working with the 150 for many, many years, I can say without a doubt that the position of the bulb does make a big difference. Even in a small confined area. I've taken part in several tests in which we actually did light output measurements with 150's in a TV studio environment using appropriate lighting meters. If you still have questions of your own, here's a simple experiment..... Take your remote ballasted lamp into a dark room with either a light colored wall or floor. Just watch how much the light patterns change as you alter the position of the bulb. Because of the pressurized sodium tube inside and the placement of the elecrtode entering it, you'll notice a distinct dark area in the pattern. This is true for almost every type of HID lighting source.

Now, lets think about the bulb as its used for growing. Nature has engineered your plants with flat horizontal surfaces on the leaves to absorb as much light as possible. While ambient side lighting helps, real sugar producing power comes from above as direct rays not reflected ones. Light deminishes by a logrythmic (inverse square) law or formula. Because reflected light rays likely have to travel more than twice the distance to reach the plant, their strength is a fraction of that of a direct ray. With a vertical lamp mounted above the canopy, the vast majority of its output may only be available in a reflected pattern.

But wait you say....every store I go into has those huge fixtures above and they're all hanging vertically. Very true, but they are using multiple fixtures with a known projection pattern, that are hopefully placed in such a way as to cover over-lapping areas. Plus, store lighting is designed for the human eye not for growing. In this case ambient lighting is the target.

So does this mean you can't use a vertical mounting position? No, you can and it will grow pot. However, with a tiny 150 every lumen is a presious thing not to be wasted. If you're putting in all of the time and effort to grow your own, don't sell yourself short in a critical area.

Just a bit of rambling from a stoned engineer before his first cup of coffee.
