cinnamon sprinkled on the top soil works gr8 for gnats! And dry soil helps an awful lot too.

also read to use white vinegar or cider vinegar in a dish / cup as a trap

also the potato cut in half things is great, trash the tatter if you have baby larvae on it. also great for a visual indicator how bad or good it's going
