rice hulls

anyone got a good online source for rice hulls that
offers BULK and reasonable pricing. ?

everything ive been finding is only selling like 5lbs..
Id like to buy this in 50lb bags if possible.

any other areas that I can look to possibly source my own
rice hulls locally?

Ive read here that a brewery would be a possibly good place
to check out, ill give that a try.

There probably isnt any concern about the rice being used to
strain BEER? Right? That will just break down while
composting i figure?

Replying to keep a tab on this :D

The only place up here I've found doesn't deal directly with the public, an AG supplier out of Van.

Although, we just changed out liqour laws in BC and microbreweries are popping up everywhere, even a few distilleries.

If you have a brewery supply store in your area they will most likely carry it as well. A brewery is another good option if you can get them to bag up 50lb bags for you. Perfectly fine to use, either in your mix or compost pile.

If you have a farm store nearby see if they have food grade rice hulls, sometimes cheaper than the brewery supply stores. I know a couple people have mentioned Permastall bedding which is the cheapest of all, something like $9 for 50lbs but IIRC the stuff is treated with something. Don't hold me to that.

You might have luck with a brewery looking to be rid of waste, otherwise I wouldn't spend the money/resources to have it shipped in. There's only a couple more steps between our sprouted barley teas and beer, the use for brewing will be fine. What are you looking to use the rice hulls for? Aeration in compost heaps/worm bins?

Thanks for your time guys, really appreciate that hand.
Did a lil more searching myself, that one link that shows the bag, it
says "Riceland" on it, so i googled them and BINGO BANGO they are the
source :) Check it out.

http://www.riceland.com/pages/rice-hull-products/

heres their product options for the RICE HULLS.

http://www.riceland.com/uploads/pages/speccard_rev_v1.pdf

They are located in Arkansas and i believe they have a minimum order,
so these links might not help everyone besides those that are interested
in getting MASSIVE quantities of rice hulls

$72 for the compressed 30cuft bale
$7.16 for the compressed 50lb bale

The larger bale comes to around 80cents a cu ft smaller one is around a dollar,
so their sizes are rather comparable and you dont save to much when buying
the bulk.
BUT If you call them up and chat with them, they do give bulk discount i believe,
if you buy a truck load of the 50lb bags, they are $6.16 a bag but in order
to get bulk pricing on the larger bales, you gotta call up the actual sales
rep and chat with him, give um a call and they are happy to help you out.

Starting a FULL SPEC FULL NUTE balanced soil that I plan to run botanical experiments
with.
In other words... making my own soil and testing it in order to market it...
So trying to source from suppliers and PRODUCERS, cutting out the middle men.

For instance,
http://www.7springsfarm.com/rice-hulls-soil-amendment-50lb/,
those middle men...
reselling RICELANDs product in RICELAND packaging for nearly 4x the price lol
Convenience i guess, would be a lil more attractive if they offered free shipping.

Great links man, the 3rd link is about half the price as the rest - only $45 delivered! I was paying upwards of $70 per 50 lb bale :wallbash:

Bam baby, this is where it's at if they ship relatively small orders (15 bales or less). I just emailed them to get some quotes, at $7.16 per bale it's hard to pass up! Let's hope they don't require something crazy like a 50 bale minimum lol.

Thanks again man :tiphat:

How many do you have to order? Ive got pallets from hummert for like $30 for 50lb after you include shipping.

I wanna know the answer to this question too. Cheaper hulls = more soil. More soil = more yield. Bookmarked

Yeah thanks for reminding me about that, I just called and got through to a woman who will be getting back to me this week on a quote. She said they're only $7.16 a bale if you get a pallet - (16) 50 lb bales - and the price goes down as you get more pallets. She also mentioned you didn't have to buy an entire pallet, so I'm guessing the minimum order is a half pallet or something close to there. She said the majority of the order cost will be coming from the freight of the bales, so it depends on where they're being shipped to really.

I got a 50 lb bale for $40 from , so I'm guessing the total will be less than that per bale if we're getting it from the source. We'll see though, they ship out of Arkansas so the closer you are the better.

I'll post an update when I hear from her this week, stay tuned :tiphat:

Isn't using rice hauls short lived ??? i mean for the price is it really worth it TMO rice hauls in soil last a very short time

Fuck it buy a pallet for a little over the price of a few bags, depending on what shipping is. A local place has them near me. They ask 45 a bag. RIPOFF. They know the prices on the web after logistics though. Smart. I'm interested to see what the freight would be.

Just wait to you get the quote for freight shipping. :jawdrop:
i had almost 6000 pounds shipped across country TBO i was shocked only paid 200 bucks lots of trucking companies are driving half loaded or empty back to there depot and most of it was broker fee's so total cost i think was like 345 bucks total i had to pick up freight at depot if you want it dropped to your door costs will climb

i like rice hulls because they are fleeting, microbes break them down, your soild gains "composted" material and looses aeration, needs more ricehulls. Im not a no-till guy, so i don't mind mixing new things into the soil now and then.

rice hulls sometimes are available at home brew supply stores

That's a really good deal dr fever. We pay around $300 for 2000lbs but I tried to get a hood shipped and it was the same price.

Nah it's not as bad as you think it is, it's worth it because they're really cheap compared to lava rock or perlite. They harbor microbes really well too so they're a great addition to soil

Yeah I'm gonna get a quote for 1 pallet and one for 2 pallets shipped here. 2 pallets would allow me to dig (60) 45 gallon holes, so if that's cheap enough then it'll be a go

Find your local brewery supplier (micro). They will often sell to the general public if its convenient to them. Short of that the local Homebrew supply shop will sell by the bale if you don't mind waiting for their next stock-order.

And why don't grow shops sell these by the bag? Too niche for the shelf space?
