Sexing and Pruning.... When do I start pruning and how much should I take off?

Thanks Man! I'm not sure how long you've been growing but it sounds like you've seen more hermies than I would expect. I didn't think it was really that common of an occurrence. What would you say the odds are that that these could hermie out on me? Are we talking 1 out of 10? 1 out of 100?

I haven't' been growing very long but I have read a lot. I have made nearly every classic mistake. I have my grow on auto pilot now but it was only until I failed many times.

If you take anything away from this remember, genetics count. Don't waste 4-6 months of your time, effort, money on inferior seeds.

I understand it was a trial, so if you loose them all, you've gained some experience and they have served their purpose.

If your girlfriend cheats on you once, she'll do it again, and it will be easier the second time than it was the first.

Also remember, you can't turn a whore into a housewife.

If they hermie at all, ALL will hermie that have the same parent and were given the same conditions.

The propensity to hermie is in the genetics of the strain. This
propensity increases further when you use seeds from a mother that went that way.

No need to panic, grow them out. Check for things that might cause them to hermie and try to avoid doing them. If they do hermie, make use of what ya' get, and move on.

By looking at your plants you're doing more right, than worng. I wouldn't change a damn thing about your soil, lighting, nutes, etc and with some diligence you should have success.

The Flowers Are Blooming!

The Flowers Are Blooming!

I'm starting to see some real flowers on my first grow and I'm getting excited. I do have 1 plant that has some leaves (very few) that are yellowing and have brown spots but doesn't seem to be effecting it. It is actually doing the best out of the 4 of them.

Do these look okay for day 19 of 12/12? I don't know what to expect but I can't wait to find out.

They look fine to me. Just keep doing what you are doing.

Patience will be your most important ingredient now.

In the mean time, and if you haven't already learn how to recognize the signs of ripeness so you'll know when to chop.

Looks good, will be interesting to see how they fill out over the next few weeks.
I'm at 35f and I'm sure that's what mine looked like at 28f so keep doing what you're doing!

Nice.... you're right DoDad, I definitely need to learn how to recognize the signs of ripeness. I've done some research but I'm far from "knowing".

Another thing... They're not giving off much of an aroma (if you walk in the room) but if I pinch one of the buds a bit, it's very stick icky and stinks big time...

Should they be giving off more smell at this point?

Mine seem to just be getting smelly now, since about day 30f, but still not strong enough that I need to run the exhaust fan 24/7. Before that the bud sites only smelt strong from up close, or if you rubbed the stem.

Going Good!!!! 3 Weeks Into Flower

The kids are doing well.... I'm pretty happy with my first grow so far :) I hope I can keep from screwing these things up at this point!!! The dog was obviously licking leaves while we weren't looking :)

Looking real happy dude, just let it keep doing its thing. You'll have a better idea how long she'll go in a few weeks.

Your dog seems impressed, did you have to carry him outta there?

I'm looking for recommendations on a good microscope (how many x magnification?) to best identify ripeness. Can anyone let me know of a specific make and model that works well but won't cost too much $$. The longer these go (or should I say grow :plant grow:), the more my wallet hurts!!!

Thanks! 30x was stuck in my head but good to confirm again.
Have you bought one? I was just going to get something off eBay. I think I'd have success with my camera if my shakes weren't so bad haha.

Yellowing leaves with brown/rusty spots

Yellowing leaves with brown/rusty spots

Howdy, Here's the latest..... I ended up going with Carson MicroBrite Plus 60x-120x Power LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-300). Here's the link if you want to check it out on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Carson-MicroB...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01
I think it will do the trick. It seems to work well enough but I'm finding it difficult to keep it steadily focused on one area due to the high magnification.

Now I'm up against another issue that I hope some of you can help me with. I've been getting a lot of yellow leaves with dry brown/rusty looking spots. I have my A/C blowing into my tent through the intake fan port and it seems like whatever plant I put in that corner (closest to the incoming cool air) is getting much more yellow than the other 3 plants. I've rotated the the plants out and it seems to be consistent with that corner. Has anyone ever heard of direct cold air yellowing a plant?

Also, should I cut all yellowing leaves off (even if they're just slightly yellow)? Or should I just cut off the leaves that are completely yellow and dying? The last pic shows the brown dying spots on the yellowing leaves that I'm dealing with. I know it's not the best view under HPS. I'll try to get a better pic soon. Also, I feel like I should take more off these plants to allow more light through but I still don't know enough about pruning to mess with them. Hope you all can help!!!

I leave yellowing leaves until they pull off easily, mostly out of laziness. I'm sure if you search you'll find plenty of arguments for/against cutting damaged leaves.

But if you're planning/needing to prune anyway, start with the damaged leaves, then fan leaves from the bottom 1/3rd of the plant which aren't seeing much light and finally any top fans blocking light from major budsites. Normally less pruning the better but you're not exactly short on canopy!

Light still travels through leaves to some extent, so unless you start seeing signs the lower growth is struggling maybe just give it a light thinning of fans in the middle mass to get some air movement going.

Certainly looking happy man, any idea how long you'll run them yet?

Making Progress

Making Progress

How's it going Paranoid... Thanks for asking. I'm proud of my girls so far. I did a lot of homework in advance but I'm still surprised with how well my first grow is going. It hasn't been all perfect and easy street. I've had some yellowing and rusty brown spots on some of the leaves throughout the grow but it hasn't seemed to effect them as far as I can tell. Then again, it is my first so I don't have any history to compare them to. I wish you success when you give it a go!!!
