I hear you on the heat DD's :toohot: was here 105f yesterday.

I was thinking for your soil mix you will want to keep it simple. Dont complicate things.

For fungus gnats I stand by microbe lift :D but you have to use it properly and diligently as it doesnt work over night and fails if not used diligently.

it's compost with some peat and light coco. there is a place here that sells amendments by the pound that are formulated by their in house science guy (I don't know what his title is) and a lot of people here use his Medicine Man soil for cannabis. you walk into the shop (mind you this is a shop where old farmers go) and hanging from the ceiling is a stump of a cannabis tree that was grown with his soil. The soil is super expensive but you can buy the fertilizer which is slow release into you own soil for super cheap. 5 lb bag for $12. then I just have to water and treat deficiencies. I hope this works.

I was checking out that Sweet Island Skunk on another forum and it takes 80 days to flower!?!? They had nothing but good things to say tho. How are your girls coming along?

@DoubleDD's hey so what soil did you decide to go with? Funny thing, I just saw an advertisement for cannabis specific soil.

The sweet island skunk is coming along very well. The thick white hairs are beginning to turn color. :D

Duck doi thank you sir :tiphat:

looking good huey the sweet island skunk sure does put on the weight eh could be bumbed up in frost department but doesn't seem to shabby, the strawberry cough should definitely give you some good smoke did you start her from seed or clone and where did you get it ? :respect::tiphat:

The soil I just put in is a recipe I used called Bongaloid's Soil Mix and then I added some other stuff because his basic recipe is for bloom only.
Mixed soil today to cook for 2 weeks:
2 bales of 3 cuft compressed peat moss (equilivant to 6 cuft expanded each bale)
2 bags of Happy Frog soil
enough perlite to your liking

8 cups of fish bone meal 3-16-0
8 cups of Azomite
4 cups of Peruvian seabird guano 12-10-2
6 cups kelp meal 1-0-2
1/2 cu ft EWC
Mycos per instructions on for application
4 cups Bokashi compost starter

One cup per 2 cuft
6-5-3 parts of:
6- CaCO3 calcium carbonate lime (not dolomite or garden lime)
5- Soft Rock Phosphate powder
3- gypsum

This is going in one 4x4 bed and the other one is going to be a basic soil recipe with Black Lake Organics slow release fertilizer that is put in their Medicine Man soil. The bag of soil prepared is $34 per cuft but a 5 lb bag of amendments that are in the soil is $12. So I can compare them if I wanted to and divide the strains so each strain has a different soil but then I have a bunch of different strains in one bed. not sure how I'm gonna plant them yet. I'm going to spend the next few days studying on how each strain grows by looking at grow threads.

@tleaf hey buddy, I dont think Im attracted to this plant much. She really lacks in the frost department. Im not going to judge a book by the cover but she is definately going to be short lived.

The strawberry coughs were started from seed. They are from Hazeman. I am not sure how good his genetics are but it sure looks and smells good :yummy:

@DooubleDD's thats great, the soil recipe sounds good. You should be on your way to success in no time :headbange I am going to have to swing by your place and check things out

sprout is in da house :headbange wazzz up my brotha. Thanks but I have to give credit to the new cheap camera I bought. Damn thing takes better pics than my 1200 DSLR :dunno: That Island Sweet Skunk is really putting on the weight and puts out a sweet aroma that a quite cant describe. Definitely sweet though.

Time for an update on the hydro system.

Okay, I made a few changes by adding in some t5 lamps to veg these things. I can save on electricity and reduce heat by temporarily installing these until Im ready to flower. Plus I can turn off half those lamps until needed.

Now hopefully my idea works a little better to get these roots going. I should have used 3" cubes instead of the 4" cubes. You can see the cubes extending out of the top.

Looks really good Huey! those flouros will definitely cut down on heat and that's always good in hydro. do you ever get algae on your rockwool?

BayBHuey

La Vida Loca
Hi DoubleDD's  yeah I definitely had to put those t5's in to start these young gals  off instead of running all the hid lamps

And yeah the rockwool, Im upset  the cubes are too big, I should have went with the 3", next time. This is my second attempt at this and my first attempt using the 4" cubes. The first attempt I used my normal clones that had rooted in the 2" rockwool cubes which I couldnt get to drop roots the first time because I am trying to figure out the water level. That attempt failed so here I go again.

This is my second attempt and I hope I have better luck with a plant better established in a 4" cube. Most likely some algea will grow if I do not cover it but if my canopy grows fast enough I wont worry about it.

@tleaf wazzup, yeah I like the under current only because I couldnt build it cheaper :ying: Usually everything I do is diy but this one I got from craigs list. 500 bux, not bad. I had to do some work and add some things but overall Im happy :dance013: if I can just get roots to drop LOL

be back shortly...

that is a steal...a little too good cause those systems are well over a grand. did you sterilize it first? that is probably why he sold it. hydro peeps always get the rot and then its so hard to get it out of the system in my experience.

get yourself a sharp knife and cut those blocks down to the size you want. you should use just hydropellets IMO instead of the rockwool cubes. the starter plugs are fine to start but the rockwool can suffer from overwatering where the pellets don't. rockwool is advertised that it holds lots of air so the chance of overwatering is low but I think that is only for DTW systems and ones like yours that pump water in them all the time, can flood the rockwool which leads to rot and poor DO rates. just be sure to have a huge air pump attached and you should be okay. the HID lights really really heat up the system and that is when I started having problems. checking into how others are shielding their systems from heat is a good way to go. I bought a chiller to regulate water temps and put my rez outside the tent which REALLY helped. can't wait to watch and see what's happening Huey!!

EDIT: just saw you're lava rocks and that's even better than pellets.

@DoubleDD's Oh yeah, first thing I did was clean the system with a product called physan 20. Good stuff highly recommended

I want to go hydro so I can pay more attention to detail than worry about watering and mixing nutes on a daily basis. Also, I do hear a lot about people having problems :frown: as you say so I have to take on the challenge. This is the kinda stuff that excites me. To see if I can be successful with hydro? And if I fail it will give me the drive to succeed because I wont accept failure :nono:

Honestly I really dont want to hack up my cubes, I'll just be sure to use 3" cubes next time if my plan even works. I would honestly rather have no rockwool and just place a bare rooted cutting in there but until I am setup for that I want to see how things work using cubes.

I am aware that rockwool will be an issue if it remains wet. I am currently trying to find the water level that will provide enough moisture to the roots but not drenching the cube. I hope that makes sense.

I have a huge air pump installed to help maintain DO (probably overkill lol) plus a chiller. And to help ward off the rot I will be using a simple organic tea. I may try to use a surfactant next run to compare the results to the organic tea. I am excited to see who wins fighting the rot.

I hope I covered everything, if not just ask and I will try and explain the best I can :D
