I think the utility of college for most is diminishing. The cost /benefit is based on old numbers. After the economy collapsed in 2007 college has become a holding ground for young people, but it has cost over 1 trillion in debt to house the American youth and delay them entering the job force where absolutely no jobs await. Almost 30% of all 20 somethings live at home, in mom and dads basement, accruing late penalties while they are unable to make a dent in their college loans, hoping for a job to fall out of the sky. It was a scam from the start. That's why .gov took over Sallie Mae, the lending arm of university, so now all these people owe Uncle Sam 1 trillion in non dischargeable (cannot escape through bankruptcy) debt. I read that some of the first people to get social security checks with still active student loan debt had their monthly checks garnished to pay for 40 year old student debt. Good luck with that.
Not to mention I lived for the last 10 years in a small southeast town totally dominated by a major university and all my associates and friends were connected to the school and I have seen first hand what a complete and total scam college is for 90% of people who go.

I graduated as pharmacist, did a PhD in pharmaceutical biology (phytochemistry) and a post doc in pharmacognosy (medicinal plant research).
I would earn way more if I'd went to a pharmacy right after the university... now I'm struggling getting a job in the industries ;( . A university career seems like fun cause of all the science and research but then there's the matter of money, fixed term engagements...
BTW We had 90% chicks in our uni class, didn't help much though... :D

When we had parties, we started early so that we were already done (like 'ready to go to another party') once all the math and physics students arrived trying to lay our girls
(and finished getting drunk instead) :D .

Yes, post grad mechanical engineering ... Chico State.

PS. It is vary evident in the people I meet those that have higher educations than those that do not. In their speech, their dress, that status in life. Their manner of communication...word power or lexicon.

Conversely the opposite is profoundly obvious too.

Do what I did to avoid debt on student loans - get a permanent and total disability discharge. I never paid back a dime

You should give lectures on how to scum the system. Might be a lucrative side job next to sitting on the couch watching the price is right.

Where did your 90% statistic come from? I'm certain the doctors, nurses, lawyers etc would disagree with you. Business students on the other hand....

I watch news until 1 then take a nap then watch Netflix movies until 9 or so when I go to bed. I'm usually up at 7. I worked the system - free degree, free place, free food, free cash, a free phone...:tiphat: My Netflix bill is 7 and my gym bill is 10 every month

I got a football scholarship to a University in the South. On the map it looks like it'd be "East", but they called it part of South. The very first day of Fall classes at sociology 101 the professor says, after announcing his/her name and office hours, that "prejudice is based on fact"...
I was like "WTF are they teaching here!!!!!!!"
I ended up quitting football after the most successful season/team I'd ever been a apart of, and dropped out and returned to socal.

Being a bright guy, I have made things work pretty darn well for myself. I don't need a degree to get a better job, or a raise. I am pretty happy with my station in life - under 40 no debt and I own my shit. Oh, and I live on Maui.

But being 30 units short of a BA had kind of eaten at me for a good long time.

...fast forward to last august...

I went to go buy a guitar and walked away with a guitar and another fucking scholarship (Music)! Redemption, right? That's what I thought...

FUCK SCHOOL. I don't have time for school. Music - yeah, lots of time. School... school can go fuck itself. I had been scheduling every minute of my day to try to include my family/Daddy duties, garden duties, homework/studying, music practice, and class. My wife and I were like ships passing in the night, and I barely had time for my kids as I was always trying to do homework or study for the quiz the next day... some crap! During this past spring break I was talking with my wife, and we both agreed I didn't need to go to school to make our lives better -the degree won't be putting more flowers in the proverbial basket.

My time away from the family was taxing. Shit to make it worse, my garden had suffered major problems and setbacks when I started going back to class, and for 4-5mos the garden was producing horseshit and was way out of order - I am now just finally recovering. I didn't have the time to give it the proper attention. That shit cost me money.

I'm much happier now than I was a month ago. I can wake up, smoke some pot, take care of my garden, smoke more pot, take care of my kids, take a dab or two, play with the dog, smoke more, IC it up, talk story friends....

ahhhhhhhhhh. THE LIFE.

I really enjoyed university. I hated H.S.

I got a BA in a Foreign Language, and History.

Did my education really help me professionally? Not really.

Getting a degree helped me understand what it takes to learn things.

If I was to do it all over, I would study a subject that would allow me a decent paying career.

Don't go to school and get a BA unless you want to teach. You will then need a Masters degree anyways, if you want to make top pay in education.

Just some thoughts.

Almost didn't graduate high school. Hated school. Seemed like a waste of time when you have access to almost any piece of info instantly via the internet.

I home school my kids, and don't push college. Very few degrees are "worth" their price anymore.

I teach my kids to do their own thing, and start a business.

Going to college seems like a weird concept to me.

A group of "people" put together certain "curriculum", and if you "pass" then you can now have a "higher" economic, and social status.

Seems like the definition of a caste system to me.

No thanks. :)

I have a weird outlook on collage, or education in general. For me I am a big advocate for the "Teach a man to fish". I luckily found out at a very young age how to teach myself what I wanted to know. I did go to collage but at that point I was already in medical information technology and I didn't learn a damn thing just wasted money so I quit. I understand some occupations require collage like doctors ect and that's okay but for the most part a lot of the things out there you can self teach.
