Panasonic Whisper Fan Carbon Scrubber Tutorial: Quietest most efficient fan ever!

The flower chamber has the 80 cfm whisperceiling in there...I have that chamber setup for a total of 28 cfl light sockets...However, because the 80 cfm can't suck that good I can only use about half that number before temps get too high....I really wanted to keep it stealth as that 150 cfm is around .3 sones...If I jump up to the 190 cfm the sound goes to 1.3 sones....Not sure how loud that would be.....I'm just thinking flower chamber is roughly 22 cf...should not a 150 cfm fan cool it ??? thanks again guys.

I have two cabinets that come out to right about 20 cubic feet, and I use a 150 whisperceiling CFM as a booster fan between them, AND a 290 CFM whispercieling as the main outlet. I'd presonally tell you to always buy the bigger fan....you can lower the sound and CFM with a (solid state) fan controller if need be, but you can never make a smaller fan more powerful.

Also, I have no desire to undermine this thread, as it gave me tons of useful information, and was the reason I bought my whisperline fans, which I love. But, with that said, I can tell you with years of experience both ways, that if you truly need anything close to 100% smell/stealth coverage: buy a can filter, don't build this scrubber. This scrubber will effectively remove 75-85% of the smell, which is great for plenty of folks needs, but if you need true stealth, this scrubber won't do.

True, and I am saving my pennies for a can filter. I only need a small one, and hopefully I can continue to use the Panasonic as my inline fan. But I do feel this DIY has served me well...

thesloppy...well I was hoping to get by with the 150cfm....Because after that the sones increase significantly....One thing I do have going for me is the outside temps of the cabinet....they run around mid to low 60s, so that helps....

thanks for the info Iggy...man I am really on the fence here....that 290cfm is 2.0 sones whereas the 80 cfm is .3 sones....Now I have 2 pc fans and a wally world type fan in the grow box now....Those are louder than the 80cfm panasonic fan...But how much louder ? You can't hear them outside the box....Maybe I would be OK going with that 290 cfm in terms of noise ?

I really want to be able to unload the fury of 28 cfl's on some unsuspecting pot plants, lol......I might need that 290cfm to do it....

Right now I have 13 cfl turned on, and the temp just now was 81...That is without the wally world fan on, and it also without any carbon filter hooked up yet which will further reduce the air suction....

Anyone else thinkin' that maybe I should just go with the 290 cfm ?

It depends on a couple of things, exactly how much stealth are you looking for, and the design/location of your cab, fan and/or air outlet.

As I said, I have both the 150 and the 290 CFM and I've run them with the DIY scrubber from this thread and blowing into (not the most popular method) a can filter. For reference sake I basically keep a regular 12" box fan running on medium nearby to cover the noise, and that works with either/both fans running into a filter, but didn't particularly cover the noise when running either through the DIY scrubber....but my air outlet wasn't muffled in any way, and my fan was basically just blowing directly against an open wall, inches away, all day long....it probably would've been half as loud if it was blowing into a bigger, more open space and/or an outdoor outlet. It pays to put some thought into airflow outside the cabinet as well.

well I would prefer to be as much stealth as possible...Right now you can pretty much stand right next to it without hearing a thing.

At the same time I want production, lol.

They way I have it rigged I am going to try and mount the filter in front of the intake.

This has to be a record...I've been debating this fan decision for 1 month now...This is getting nutzzz....I have to make a decision soon because my plants are getting bigger...

150, 190, or 290 cfm.....that is the decision.

I'm beginning to lean towards the 150...If it can't keep the heat down, then I guess I'd have to buy a 3rd fan...And then I would just use the extra fan to make another cabinet or something.

That way if the 150 doesn't cut I could jump to the 290 cfm....The 190 can't be all that big of a difference over the 150....

Anyone think this might be a good way to go ?

***also the 150 is the same size as my current 80 cfm, so there would be no more tweaking to the box....the 190 and 290 cfm are larger and would require tweaking***

My 100 CFM keeps the heat down inside the tent fairly well, even in the summer. The tent is in a room with no AC.

The hottest my tent has gotten is 91 degrees. I do have one medium table top fan and two small fans inside the tent for additional airflow and cooling. To keep the heat down in the room my tent is in I put a low profile double fan in the window, blowing outside. Not the best set up, but I feel I've gotten good results in spite of my n00be mistakes and the restrictions that go along with growing in an apartment.

Good luck :)

Not to cause you anymore decision grief, have you looked into one of these?

Soler & Palau TD-100X In-line Exhaust Fan

Search at Amazon, this gets style fan gets good reviews, esp with the growers, as it can be hooked up to a can style carbon filter. If anything, you will get a chuckle out of the reviews and questions, all these lawless pot heads using this innocent household fan for their evil purposes, LOL

Thanks for the replies iggy...but at this point I think I am just going to stick with the bathroom fans....instead of patching existing holes and cutting new.....I've decided to go with the 150 cfm.....if I find that it's not enough I guess i would have to go with the 290 cfm.....worst case scenario I wind up with an extra fan......if that happens I'll sell it to someone for a small cabinet, or perhaps build myself a second cab.

I'll return back in about a week or so after I have the new fan installed with results.

Yepp I just pulled the trigger for the 150cfm on ebay...been watching prices....it was newly listed....got it for $139 shipped....not a killer deal but not a bad price either.....I really couldn't wait much longer due to the fact I'm in the middle of a grow right now, lol

That's a good price, I'm certain that size will work out for you.

I'll be watching for an update....

I agree, I did a cab build similar to this design and I had to treat my exhaust air with ozone. I guess you could exhaust into a can filter doubling your filtering however.. the whisperline fans will make noise if the exhaust has any restrictive airflow.

well I would say the new fan is a success...I actually just switched over to flowering yesterday....Right now I have 18 bulbs running for a total of 414 watts and temps are at 73.....Looks like I am going to have no problem adding even more lights during flowering....I'm stoked.....

I should note that I do not have the carbon filter on there yet....So that obviously will reduce the cfms....Hopefully it doesn't effect it too much.

Anyone else using the 150cfm Panasonic?

Looking for input on noise level and how much wattage your cooling with it (wattage used, ambient temp and in cab/tent temp) before I pull the trigger.

I have had the 80cfm for around 4 years now and it has done me well with a 150w HPS but looking to upgrade to 280W with the 150cfm if its still comparably quiet to the 80cfm. They are both rated .3 or less sones without static pressure and have the same size metal housing boxes.

150 cfm

150 cfm

Bueno, I've been using a 150cfm for a while now...same dead silence as the lower cfm models.

I used it successfully to aircool a 400w cmh (a little cooler then a hps) I made sure to make my duct runs as short and straight as possible to reduce any restriction on the fan/flow. I also used an oversized 6"x24" filter to reduce any air restriction as well. I think it would be about the same with a 400w hps.

I want to stress though that I think it successfully cooled it only because I took the extra measures not to restrict airflow. :tiphat:

prices have really jumped since I first bought some of these whisper fans a few years ago...I remember I got them from whamhomecenter , but prices are much higher now. anyone find supercheep prices on these anywhere? I want to get another 150cfm for my led cab.
