Interesting thread; Tang, that kind of trippy high may be unattainable from the African strains so far outside the tropics due to lower THCV production because of the lower light intensity/UV levels, but it's worth pheno hunting for it!

I lived just outside the tropics, but don't have the time and dedication to go off into the jungle anymore; all my growing is under HPS nowadays. That being said, Ace and CBG do have some great strains that I need to try out some time!

Cheers guys, all credit to the Ace team for this amazing strain.

Tang, what do you recommend to feed them? some sort of bat guano?. sunleaves Jamaican bat guano comes to mind.
I have feed them a flower booster sulfated potash mix. The Malawis are not being affected by a vine hopper infestation in my area, the Panamas were so bad they had waxy sticky stuff on the plants and they were limp, luckily my spray mix is getting them back to normal.

I'm thinking they will finish sometime in May, june starts to get a bit cold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tauranga check out the average temps and tell me what you reckon?.

Hi Kiwi from what I see in the pics more likely June to July unfortunatly, but that all depends on the flowering they should start soon as the days get shorter. The flower booster you mentioned will do the trick once they start flowering. They flower for a long time in Aussie but saying that I have never out grown Aces Malawi, you may find them quicker. I will know once I grow mine I took clones of the malawi, mulangi gold and Zamaldelica yesterday ready for transplanting in April 1st.

Hi Gelado yes I am stumped trying to reproduce the high I tried for many years outdoors with my own seeds I got from Malawi. in Malawi they are at high altitude and in old volcanic regions I think the altitude and soil must have some effect. Most of the other well known sativas from around the world all seem to be high altitude regions. Any ideas how to reproduce this climate and condition indoors?.

Tang, Depending on pheno I think it'l finish quicker over here in NZ. I've heard reports of Ace Malawi finishing in late april at the earliest over in Aussie. same with their golden tiger.
Is the Zamaldelica a fem seed?. Your're a funny grower planting in April but it obviously works to your advantage.

There's something magical about volcanic regions, the best weed comes from the pacific rim and volcanic regions eg NZ,Hawaii and Malawi like you said.
Have you been to New Zealand Tang? Proper genetics grown in this country is among the best in the world because of the volcanic soil and intense UV penetration. Imo they pump out more resin as a defense mechanism to protect the stigmas.
I have a feeling Malawi and Panama will be the best weed I've grown if it finishes off properly.

Kiwi you are right about the volcanic soils and mountains, your area should be excelent if it stays warm long enough to finish flowering properly.
The reason I plant late summer is to get a winter grow in. I vedge them under lights to about half metre then put them out in the mid west winter sun. Where I grow them the average winter temps are 25/15c day/night. By April it will be 11hrs daylight by finish end of June 10.5hrs. It has sunshine just about 90% of the time the rest it rains.
I have never been to NZ but its on my "to do" list for sure.
The Zamaldelica is indeed fem and now has 4 clones of herself in the nursery.
Dont get me wrong the Malawi I have is still good, I just tried some cob I cured for 5 or 6 weeks. Very tasty, no coughing and smells wonderful. But no visuals everything else though, a good smoke with a good high.
I look forward to your next pictures they will be epic I am sure. Go the all blacks.

Tang, that's a good question--some have tried using UVB light indoors, but it didn't make much of a difference when I tried it. I haven't even tried growing a long flowering sativa indoors. The power bills are keeping me away. ;) I'm only growing in the winter months from now on as my home isn't insulated and I can use the heat from the HPS to warm my home and don't need air conditioning to keep the lights cool...win-win all around.

Hi Gelado I am useing Ceramic metal halide they put out huge amounts of red and ultraviolet light, the plants love them plus, I get sun burn after about 10secs of exposure. I got the un coated bulbs that do not filter out any ultra violet. But its not enough alone, to get the high levels of THCV i am after.
I may have to look at mimicing the volcanic type of soil somehow. I will keep trying till I get it right.

You could try rock dusts, they're all the rage with organic growers nowadays! :)

Pretty cool that you use CMH. I have a single digital ballast and I wouldn't buy an older one just to use CMH at this stage.

Man you're winter temps are my temperatures now, the sun is intense over here. Maybe the sun is not so strong to release the trippy terpenes/thc profile? in winter?.
All I can say is Malawi is the best growing outdoor plant I've seen, an average season and is growing just as vigorous as a good season.

Do the temps have to be over 18 degrees in the day at the end of flower?.

Summer sunlight is definitely way more intense, but outside the tropics your light intensity is less than 2/3 of what it is in the tropics. Growing at altitude would help, of course.

Temps under 15-16 degrees C will slow down growth and reduce yield, but outdoors you're going to have loads anyway, so it doesn't matter. ;)

The way someone explained it was we get the intensity closer to the equator, but you get the long hours further north/south, so plants can veg and get huge!

Our issue here is humidity; way too wet to grow anything but the hardiest pure tropical sativas outside. Anything else will rot unless you have unobstructed airflow!

NZ is a different story though, we have the worst ozone leakage in the world and we have really intense sun that burns you in minutes.

I get an average of 17-20 degree highs in May with 8-10 degree nighttime temps. Is this ok?. we get high humidity too man, hit 93% the other night.

Hi Kiwi I have no idea as I am not that experienced a grower, just a lot of experience buying the end product. All I know is Malawi is hot and wet in summer and warm and dry in winter.
Up on the high mountains they grow tea as its cooler in those regions. But the good stuff I got comes from the hot areas although they are relatively high altitude its still dense bush.
I think my winter temps will be ok infact probably better than my summer temps, which can get very hot 42c and bone dry 25% humidity. Not good for any living thing in my opinion.
All my clones have taken and should show signs of roots soon this is an easy strain to grow thats for sure. The re veg is also powering on.

Yeah, Oz and NZ have huge ozone holes, and that UV has to do crazy things for plants, but the intensity of the actual light in NZ can't compare to the sunlight in Thailand or Cambodia, for instance.

As for your temps and humidity...you're going to have slower growth and more chance of mold...watch those girls and remove anything that molds immediately. Malawi should be pretty airy and mold-resistant, but you may still have issues with the old rot...

Yeah I know what you mean and it does do crazy things for the plants man, especially in the more volcanic regions over here. Yeah I got Ace's version for more speed because my climate can't grow 18 week strains. Might get some mold on the Taskenti too because it's quite slow for an indica and it rains up here in april a bit. Jamaica has some serious light intensity.

Actually we only sometimes get high humidity. We're sitting from late 20's to 60% humdity on average. Today is only 29% and 25 degrees. Don't get me wrong, my climate is killer in the day. Last year I was sweating my ass off in May.

I agree Tang, anything over 40 degrees is too hot in my opinion. Even mid 30's starts to get pretty soaring hot for the plants. great with lots of water and a big rootball though.

Ace Malawi have dense buds so don't worry bm.
Why would it be bad if it were airy anyway? nothing like a nice airated sati bud to smoke on in the day. A change from dense resinous buds for once.

I'm new to sativa. Never smoked any before. Airy takes so long to trim. It's frustrating as hell cutting up airy buds. I have had a few crap indicas do this before. Have also seen and had some really solid stuff. They need a medical marijuana national program in Australia. The weed prices are just to expensive for the people that need/want it. I'm new but I listened and have taskenti and panama with Malawi on the way. Not sure what my game plan will be. Small though.

Yeah bro keep it small for sure. Yeah I hate it too man that's why a lot of landrace sativa buds have leaf on them but it looks cool with the thin blades surrounding a sativa nug.

Yeah 98% of kiwis wanted medical marijuana and 75% wanted it decriminalized. Looks like we get no say and yeah the prices are freakin ridiculous for people who actually need it. At least Canberra lets you grow 2 plants in Aussie.

I reckon 2 of each like the style of the Malawi clones I've done. Use rain crystals to hold the moisture - I haven't watered my Malawis since the 2nd week pf being in the ground.

If it turns to shit, 8 plants is not commercial level growing.
Be careful and don't tell anyone. People get jealous in our 2 countries because it's still considered highly illegal.
