I cleared posting this project in this thread with D9... it started as a "Low Maintenance/No Maintenance mother keeper system but it's turning into something different now.

So the idea started when I had some spare 5.5 inch pots sitting on a spare 27 gallon Tough Tote (the ones from Lowes are wider and shallower than HD or WallyWorld). I found 15 fit perfect... which is good because I hate culling something until I'm sure it can't help anybody.

View Image
I laid out the pots in a grid, drilled the center of the pots through the lid of the tote

View Image
Using the holes I predrilled I used a 2 in holesaw on the Tough Tote lid and a 1.5 inch holesaw on the pots (go lightly on the pots they will crack, let the saw do the work.)
View Image
I cut lanscape fabic for the bottom of the pots so the Turface didn't pour out the drain holes and added tailpieces.

The goal was to keep "mothers" alive until I'm sure what to cull, I found myself top-feeding once a day though and they grew like crazy.

Classic build bro... K+++

Im doing the same thing, only with 1 L Air pots and a shallower tote.
Pots should be here by Friday....

Funny once your used to PPK growth...
Normal growth rates just wont cut it....

Keep on keeping on brother.. Looking grand....:respect:

no shit. im about to build a couple more ppks to get my rotation going. growth is explosive and lush.

to think that the first picture turns into the second in just a couple months is baffling when you're used to growing other ways lol

Thanks D9... I have a note for anyone who wants to duplicate the build.

I went to clean out the sites that had been transplanted out into the veg room and the landscape fabric was gone. Evidently the roots grew into the fabric and it took a ride into my veg system... stuff is rot resistant so I don't think there will be any ill effects. Time will tell.

Any input?

I should have mentioned the pics don't show it but I included a drain... everything I build has a way to be drained. I'm working on a great way to quickly pump out a fully functioning system, nothing really new just a different way to skin the mule. Details to come.

How much water is in the the black tote with the yellow lid? I bought 2 new ones last month and both split when I was filling them.

O

otis33

that's strange, the one I bought from Lowe's for my blumats I can stand on the lid when it's full of water and it supports my weight no problem.....I stand on it weekly for the past 18 mos to snap photos when I update my pics of my d-stack. the box I use for my big ppk is also from Lowe's, it's a kind of truck box similar to the one pictured above. a bit more expensive, but very strong.
also, the float valve in the smaller container with the 11/16(?) hole was key in getting the ph and ppms in line in my ppk. it took me quite a while to wrap my head around what was going on in the ppk threads, but once it clicked it is pretty simple and any one remotely diy inclined can build and run one.

Hmm. These were from hd. The lid looked a little different color than they used to...
Got 2 more. They aren't split, but man they are bulging! I use them to catch rainwater outside. Looks like they could pop at any time..

The HD ones (and also Walmart) aren't as tough they used to be, even the Lowes ones aren't as good as they were a couple years ago. The Lowes ones are also shorter but wider which is what you want for PPKs (they hold more volume per given unit of height). I do have an HD tote as a bulk res on a different system and I fill it to the top every time it's drained down.

I also had an HD tote with a pinhole in it due to the molding process, now its common practice to fill the tote and check for leaks before I start drilling holes in it. The things we learn from our mistakes.

The tote in my previous pics is from Lowes... it is filled damn near the top 24/7... I've even toyed with fitting a float valve to make it really no maintenance... maybe before my next vacation, every other system I have running can be left alone for weeks at a time if need be.

Another feature I wanted to mention before is the potential mobility of my Mother Keeper System. I say potential because I haven't had to put it to the test. If I take an empty tote flip it upside down it fits perfectly over the lip of the tote lid... drain it, duct tape it all together for added security and wheel it out. This may not work for everyone but for my set of circumstances it's pretty cool.

I could also outfit it with strip lights and a computer fan to make it self contained... might be a way to have a buddy hold on to my genetics if need be.

I can take a pic of what I'm talking about later if anyone needs help imagining what I'm describing.

I have used a cereal container... a 1 gallon oval sterilte pitcher... and a small garbage can, like what you would tuck under a desk.

Alien Dawg uses a large plastic Folgers coffee can.

There are 1 million ways to PPK. Find yours.
(I should work in advertising with a line like that.)

I don't trust the 27 gallon totes as much as some do. I put one inside another and use this as a res. I don't even fill this to the top.

the first 2 are Alien Dawgs' "Border Haze" seedlings. i'm trying to get them to the size where i can take a cutting and flower these for sex.

another "dope" plant at 30".

a "gdp x gws" whatever that is. i have harvested one and it produced well.

another "dope".

still rooting all clones in place with no failures yet.

Have you noticed the roots not growing where the turface is being disturbed by the inlet pipe dumping water? Just thinking you could put a small piece of plastic or similar under the inlet to diffuse the water, preventing root damage that may otherwise be occurring.

hey, i have thought about it but by the time veg is done the roots have totally occupied the container except for a small hole right under the outlet.
