That is an option yes. On the other hand growers have just doen fine growing under HPS, so it is your own choice. HPS for quantity, plasma for quality.
but stand alone, these are, in your opinion the right choice? I would like to have quality and quantity, but who doesn't? Please Throw me a bone, say money no issue, how would you best design, for yield and quality, a 14' x 28' room with 10' ceilings? What supplemental lighting would you suggest?

I would suggest a mix of plasma and HPS. 14x28 ~ 4.25 x 8.5m so 36 square meters, so you would require about 38,000 - 40,000 umol s-1 to light your complete room with at least 1000 umol m-2 s-1 when you take into account wall losses.

(ppf I calculate with, is what comes out of the fixture after reflector losses, not lamp ppf)

18 x 1000W = 36,000 umol (out of reflector in your room)
18 x LEP = 4,500 umol (out of reflector in your room)

That's the high range, you could do a bit less when you have good reflecting walls.

When used efficiently that should be enough for 15-20 kg of dry end product for an experienced grower. I do not know your market price but that should cover your complete investment, energy and other costs easily in the first crop cycle.

We recommend at least one plasma lamp per 1000W HPS for increased quality and a more balanced spectrum. During veg you dim the Pro 1000 to 750 or lower for a higher amount of plasma light during the 18 hours cycle, ramp up to 1000 during flowering 12 hours.

Change HPS lamps once a year, HPS reflectors once every year or two years.

Is the plasma supplementation as necessary when using a greenhouse in your opinion?

What kind of footprint dimensions are typical for 1000 umol m-2 s-1 in a greenhouse? Do folk ever change the footprint for winter/summer light level differences?

Plasma is pretty useless in a greenhouse as you normally have more than enough sunlight, except when you hardly have any sunlight in a dark winter. For northern countries with very long nights in the winter it is useful, but that's the only exception.

You don't light 1000 umol in a greenhouse, you provide additional lighting to sunlight, normally you add between 150 and 250 umol m-2 s-1 depending on the desired light levels.

Can you use a 600w greenpower philips bulb with the 1000w gavita remote ballast turned down to 600w? Or... is the purpose of that know strictly to dim a 1000w bulb.

I would like the option to buy one ballast for 2 bulbs, so I can increase intensity via bulb, and not via dimming.

You would have to use a 400V greenpower EL lamp, but you would need a different reflector for that as the 600W is single ended E39 mogul and the 1000W is double ended. It is not specifically designed for that.

Yes. I am thinking that I want to use the 600w 400v bulbs hanging vertically in e39 sockets for my first run, and if I want to switch later down the road, buy the 1000w DE bulb and reflector.

I just want clarification that the switchable ballast will fire both bulbs..

a 600w 400v bulb boosted to 660, or a 1000w DE bulb boosted if I want to boost.

I got my first lesson with how strong these lights are. Did not even think about canopy distance and it bit me in the ass. I was doing plant maintenance and found 1 plant had bleaching and 1 plant had a branch toasted... I found I was way off in my setup. I have them set to 30" above the canopy and 825w now.. I would not recommend using the 1150 unless you have the space to raise the light. Never put them closer then 25"... IMO 12' ceilings+ are a must at 1150w..These reflectors are so efficient I have nothing to compare them to they just Kick ass on any other lighting system I have used.

They say for the footprint at 12" above the canopy to cover a 3' x 3' area
or at 15" above the canopy it can cover a 4' x 4' area.

As supplemental lighting, can these cover a greater area?
I am right around 1000 umol/mm with the 1000 watt pros right now.
So I am wondering whats the maximum area I could cover with each plasma?

I dont think there are many users of the Plasma lights. you might not get any info about them. If anyone knows it will be whazzup.. I can tell you if youe using the Gavita pro 1k or the E-Papillon 1k you need to have them at 30" above your canopy...

I grow with gavita 1000 and have for 2 years. They r unbelievable. I started mixing Kissel 350's into the room and have been getting unbelievable results. I think it is the future. I added 10 of them at 33 watts a piece. I got almost 3000 watts of suplimentale lighting. The internodal spaceing is so dence. The buds r nuts.

hey whazzup im takin your advice bro lol. but this time my questions are about the LEP.

would one LEP cover a 4x8 area or would you recomend two LEP for that space?

also would the new hps bloom version LEP be just as good for veg as the full spectrum?

last one ;) how hot does the non ac LEP get? im thinking about using two non ac LEP along with two 600el in a dr240w tent but im abit worried things are gona heat up in there quite abit.

@hortus: about lamp configurations: I can't comment on any positioning without measurements. Every room is different, each solution is different.

About LEP: We have a whitepaper on the site explaining everything about LEP used as supplemental lighting.

Let me say this once more: There is no LEP that you can use stand-alone for flowering at a good efficiency, as the ppf/W is much lower than HPS. LEP is for quality, HPS is for quantity. When used as supplemental lighting the distance can be the same as the HPS fixture, as for supplemental light you need less intensity. 5%-7% blue is already enough.

@toka: LEP has a square field so no way you can light an 8x4 space with one lamp. For short veg cycles the supplemental version is perfect as well, just do not get it too close to the plants (read the whitepaper). I have done tests with mothers under the 41.01 for over a year, no problem.

The LEP dissipates about 140W of energy you need to take out of your room. However, if you extract the air that is never a problem because it is convection heat that goes up an never reaches the plant. The light has only 4% IR in it, compared to > 60% for HPS.

There are thousands of LEP users. We know that because we see the sales. Some share their grows here in diaries, many don't, same as with other grows. So far I still have to hear from a grower who regrets buying plasma. Breeders like DNA Genetics and many others invest in Plasma because they had great results in their trials.

As always, do not take my word for it, ask your peers.

We have professional customers who use LEP for flowering but they use 4 LEPs per square meter! Where quality is key and money is not an issue, LEP can be used and provides incredible results. But again, it is not very efficient.
